Another thread got me wondering. If I take my 96 F53 in to get charged, if I'll get away with the new stuff, or have to have extra work done.

There are drop in replacements for R12 (the freon that should be in a 1996) a good shop should have the drop in replacement, a common drop in replacement is R414

I do believe that your coach is charged with 134a from the factory. I had a 94 F53 chassis and it was 134a. But I suppose it was up to coach manufacturer. But then again I had to replace the compressor and that was a Ford item. So I bet it's 134a.

If your mechanically inclined you can buy the doityourself kit
and add 134/12 equivelent to the system.I have a 40 allegro bus and have added rediteck to it 2 years ago and still working fine
The kit comes with hose and can of freon and can of sealer/freon
Just buy the kit for the 134 system as thats what yours should be
check the label
Now if the compressor seal is gone or hose blowen etc thats a different story

Yep, my '95 F-53 uses 134a as well, with no signs of a conversion having been done.

The 1993 P30 shipped with R-134a per the GM 1993 P30 shop manual. Ours is a 1992.

Thanks everyone. Now it's just a question of figuring out how to do it myself, or to hire it out.

The do-it-yourself kits you can get at NAPA, for example, seem pretty easy and are not really expensive. Not sure what the cost of having a professional do it runs.
