Like rock says, leave it set for all counties.

I use a midland and far as I know it's the latest and greatest as it were.
Short story.. Told to me by no less than NOAA (In weather spotter class)
Man in Ohio, I think, owns a factory. He is interested in weather and when he built his factory he built in a "Storm Celler" shelter.. He also has a weather/all-hazards alert radio. Well.... It went off, TORNADO WARNING.. His employees shut down production and headed to the shelter.. When the All Clear happend they climbed out of that very solid hole in the wall and found nothing. I mean nothing.
No building, No machines, No cars in the parking lot..> NOTHIGN (well one engine block in the parking lot)
Total dead or injured in that plant... ZERO
The plant has since been rebuilt.. The employees cars replaced, and production continued...
But imagine if they had NOT had that warning, or the storm shelter.
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

Just for info...this time of year is when wx radios usually go 'on sale.' Tis just about the start of tornado season in the mid-west.

We had our first tornado for 2010 in Oklahoma yesterday. It destroyed several houses and a bar and some outbuildings--luckily, no one was injured. Preliminary reports have it as an EF2 or EF3.
DH and I have a portable weather radio handset with SAME technology. We can take it with us in the 5th wheel or if we go out hiking, etc. for the day. It gives me peace of mind and I even take it to work when severe storms are forecast.
I don't know what kind of weather radio that you bought for such a great price, but as long as it lets you know when severe weather is in your area--then it is WELL worth the minimal cost.

Ggardner - you do realize that there are 8 different weather channels, right? Just going to weather band doesn't guarantee it is on the most local broadcast channel - you might need to change the channel to find one that has the broadcast on it... ST

Yep we did the same thing. Bought a pair for hunting in fall and backing the camper in during the summer and they came with the weather band. Super easy and quick to access.

Wiscampsin wrote: IMO a weather radio is one of those 'don't leave home without it' items. Even though I've still got about a foot of snow outside it won't be long before those spring/summer severe storms pop up. We went with a handheld battery operated one with SAME technology. If the CG power goes out we still know what if anything is headed our way. Here's a link to NOAA Weather Radio:

Also thanks for the link.
The DW & I just happened to be talking about severe WX this morning. We will be passing right through the heart of the TX & OK panhandlles next month. Tornados & severe thunderstorms have me rattled a little because they are an unkown to us.
Hurricanes I can deal with. Have had at least 6 of them run right over the top of me. Can't count the almost hits but they are things that I am familiar with.
Our plan is to watch the forcasts, program the weather channels into our ham VHF radio, & if at all possible avoid the storms even if we are forced hundreds of miles off our planned course. Better detoured & in one piece than splattered over a couple of counties.

We decided to get ones that double as 2 way radios: Midland GXT950. Got them on eBay for around 50 bucks.
