When we were first looking at buying a travel trailer the one thing we noticed at dealers were their big supply of different types of deodorant for the black tank. At Walmart it's the same thing a whole isle full of different types of deodorant. So we assumed the smell must be a big thing with travel trailers. At this time we're in our 3rd month of living in ours 5 nights a week and we've yet to smell the first scent from the black tank. In fact we've never smelled the deodorant that we put in the black tank every time we drain it either. I think we're probably just wasting money pouring this stuff in the tank that we never smell.

Anyway that was a nice surprise to know we're not going to have to live here smelling sewer odors for the next 3 years during our stay in Mississippi.

The chemicals are to help breakdown the waste. The deodorant is just an added feature.

We are gone 6 months a year and NEVER use anything in our tanks. We dump when almost full or when planning on not using it for a month or more, and rinse the black with a built in flush system. All the additives and deodorants are a fine way to separate a man from his money.

The MAIN ingredient it lots of water. If you use adequate amounts of water there shouldn't be any smell to deal with but the toilet chemicals are so cheap that we use them anyway just as a precaution. If odor comes out of the toilet having it be the stink of these chemicals won't be any more pleasant than the sewage in my opinion.

as long as your vent isn't clogged, keep water in the bowl, and try not having the fan going when you step on the peddle, you should have no problems.
If you do notice an odor I'd be willing to bet it's one of the above.

We live in our TT for three months every winter in Florida, camp in the other states during the summer, and never use anything in the black or gray tanks except lots of water. We have never had a problem with smells either outside or inside the trailer except, as mentioned, if you use the Fantastic Fan during flushing.
