Hello all,
We recently purchased our 96 Monaco Dynasty from someone who already had the oil bath hubs installed. Unfortunately there isn't an instruction manual with them. There is a green center mounted rubber cap and a green cap on the side, the front has a clear plastic ring to view the oil level. Can anyone tell me a few different name brands so I can perhaps download a manual? If not can you tell me which cap does what? I'm thinking the center cap is for filling to halfway point and the cap on the outside is for draining old oil out for an oil change. Does that sound right? Thanks for the help! - Tom

There is not really much more a manual would tell you, you look at the clear plastic lense and note where the oil level is. If it is below the FULL line, remove the center rubber plug and add some oil until it reaches the FULL line, no more, no less. If you want to drain, turn the wheel until the side plug is facing DOWN and remove plug and drain. Stemco is a brand name most truckers use.

Stemco

By the way you don't fill to the half way point, you fill to the lower fill line which is visible on the plastic face plate which would be way below the half point.

I use Lucas Hub Oil, mostly because it's name tells me what it's for.

Most hubs have a sump in the middle, the only way to completely drain is to remove the hub and tilt over.
Always inspect inside and outside of hub/wheel for leaks. When they leak they will coat the wheel with quite a lot of oil. Hub holds about a quart.
Sometimes the rubber plug will get the center vent hole stopped up. It's a good idea to check it with a small piece of wire/paper clip when servicing.
As stated, fill to line Not to top. If they get filled to the top of the opening they will spew when the oil heats up and expands.

If you want to drain the hubs for a lube change, draining through the drain plug will not get all the fluid out. The outside bearing holds about 25-35% of the lube behind it. According to Freightliner, getting that out is not necessary for a lube change, but you obviously will not the full capacity back in after you drain it. Also, getting fluid into and out of the center portion of the wheel is slow due to the lube viscosity. If you do want to drain it all, the procedure for torquing the wheel after removing the outer bearing is very specific. Be sure to follow them closely and use new wheel nut locks.

Don't forget to recheck fluid level several times when refilling. I had to top off after oil settled in.
