The very first experience I had with Craigslist was I put a brand new house oven on CL for sale..........We bought it for a remodel but changed our mind on the configuration after We had the oven and it was no longer returnable..........

So, a guy calls and said he's interested, he comes over and says he'll take it.....we load it into his truck and he says he has to get the money out of his truck....I walk my handtruck back to my garage and while the guy went to his truck to get the money he jumped in, started it up and peeled out of my driveway......stealing my brand new oven!

Yeah, I know, I should have gotten paid before we loaded it......but I was too trusting......my fault!

My brother's car was stolen in Lawrence, MA. He called the police, made the report, etc.. FIVE days later he was driving a rental down the road and SAW HIS CAR! He knocked on the door, asked if he could use the phone, they let him in and my brother called the police FROM the robber's house and told them he found his car. The police had absolutely no idea who my brother was, never heard of him, had no report on file, computer, anywhere, .... my brother got into his own car, drove it home and arranged to pick up the rental car later.

Most police depts no longer have the staff to deal with minor crimes.

I was over at the local PD a few years back to get fingerprinted for a government application. There was a sign that essentially said you were out of luck if you had a non-injury hit and run.

My son had a Les Paul Black Beauty we bought for him as a Christmas gift. He loved that guitar. He joined a band and one of the band members lived with his grandmother, so they all left their equipment at his house set up in the basement where they practiced.

Son went to get the guitar one day and it was gone. He asked the kid where it was and the kid gave attitude and said if it was that important it should not have been left there (same thing I said). The kid then told him to get the rest of his stuff out of the house and not to come back. A couple of other things wound up missing, but the guitar was the big item.

I went to visit the house four hours later when I got home from work. "Dude, I told your kid I have no idea where that guitar is and I told him not to come back" with a smug smirk that just about set me off. I pointed out that a Black Beauty is a special guitar and you can't buy knobs, pegs or pick-ups for a Black Beauty without giving the serial number and the worn parts because they don't want people buying cheaper guitars and putting Les Paul parts on it. I then reminded him that the garage bands that played the local "shows" all knew each other, and I was pretty sure that there were not many Black Beauties on the circuit. I told him that the guitar would be covered under my homeowners, but since I had a 1000 deductible I would first offer a 1,000 reward for the return of the guitar. I explained that if it came back to me and I found out he knew who had it or had anyting to do with the sale of it, I would personally rip his arms off and beat him senseless with them. My son said the vein on my forehead that popped out as I made the statement was pretty convincing.

We then headed over to the police station to report the theft. Just as we were getting ready to leave my son's cell phone rang. "Hey dude I found the guitar in an upstairs closet!"

The cop thought that was pretty funny (I told him exactly what I said) and he went to the house to pick up the guitar for us. He read the kid the riot act, took the guitar and told the kid that he'd be watching him from now on.

The rest of the kids in the band wound up getting their stuff out of there and there were a few items they never recovered.
