I've always been doing 3k miles on my gassers, since that is what everybody else does and the stickers call for.
When I got my 7.3L diesel the dealer said every 5k when I read my book it said between 5-7.5k and so i talked to a diesel shop and he says that 7-10k is fine if I am using synthetics and not pulling heavy. Pull heavy and long he recommended oil changes every 5k even synthetic.
I haven't used anything but Rotella since that is what the dealer and the diesel shop both use. I agree I would like to save on oils and tranny fluids, etc.
Getting the real truth helps (and hurts when you find out you've been robbed!!! But the truth will set you free from robbery in the future!).
anyway, for those who have the Ford PSDs (250-450s) and pull heavy and long what are your intervals?

Jim87vette-- Our Honda owner's manual says 10,000 miles on the Accord. Might be a difference between the 6 and 4 cylinder.

Both dealers and oil change places all say 3K and put up that great sticker in the window. My Expedition has a duty based monitor which takes into account miles, engine starts, etc. It seems to reach about 5500. My Subaru manufacture reccomended interval for non extreme conditions is 7500. I don't do 3K intervals.

there is a lot of bad info in this thread. the easy one first.
Oil itself doesn't wear out unless you heat it to much then it breaks down, but the additives which are whats realy important do breakdoen and such. so this is the important part whiich is what your testing for in oil analisis.
from the otiginal post of big rigs and such going a milion miles.. yes some do, but they are on oilanalisis on a weekly basis, and there have one thing that most of us don't. a bypass oil filtration system. I installed one of thease on my 7.3L and went 14 months for ly last oil change, about 35K miles Could I have gone more.. you bet my analisis was still good, but I figured I would change it because this was my first run with the new filtration so there was a lot of junk in the filter from befor. now I was doing analisis every month and this time when I get to the 35K mark I will start up again and see if I can go two years.
even if I changed my oil every 12 months, I would be looking at 1 change instead of 4or 5, so a savings of 350 to 450 a year. my filtration cost 450. so in one year it paid for its self and now its just saving me money. Do I think 5K is to short of an interval.. yes but not if your towing heavy weight as I believe the extream use woudl be 3K miles not 5. I think if you buy a good quality spin on oil filter you could safely double your interval, after that you better belooking into an aftermarket filtration solution. that is more than just your spin on filter.

If under warranty follow the engine manufacturer's oil change frequency. If out of warranty you could use oil analysis to extend change frequency. It is soot build up in the oil that is not good.

One other thing, for those oil burners that have a DPF, fuel dilution can be an issue. If running BioDiesel it it is even worse. So make sure to get regular analysis of you oil if going extended periods.

The newer diesels dump more soot and unburnt fuel in the oil than their older counterparts. That being the case I feel more comfortable changing the oil somewhat earlier than the recommended mileage.
To make the oil changes easier I installed a Fumoto valve in the oil pan and use a K&N oil filter, which has a nut welded to the bottom to facilitate removal and installation with a socket wrench.
Now, I look forward to changing the oil when the time comes rather than dreading it .
BTW, I agree with the OP about getting the oil analyzed. One day I'll give it a try...

I thought you just drove it until it hit the "add" mark on the drip stick then decide where to change or add a quart. Surely that put that mark on there for a reason.
Had an old BMW once and the low oil light came on at about 8K miles so I would get the oil changed and it would go out.

Wife's 09 Volvo XC70 specifies 7500 mile oil changes. Not all European vehicles go to use the same oci's. Don't disagree with the intent of your post. Have done extended oci's in the 70's & 80's with Mobil 1 syn. It originally came in silver colored metal cans and stated good for 25K miles/1 year, change filter at 6 mos, top up oil. Went almost 2 years and probably 20K with a 78 small block Suburban in OK.
To use extended oci's I agree with oil analysis. But, no matter how many times you do the oil analysis, if there is a failure relating to lubrication you'll be talking to the manufacturer of the oil for financial relief because the OEM will probably deny warranty claims if you can't substantiate proper maintenance intervals.
I use Amsoil in TV and will wait till after warranty to worry about extended oci's.
