I agree with "USA in a Chevrolet"

In the Midwest we are paying a flat fee for electric hookups. So whether I use 1KW or 100KW of electricity I'm paying the same amount. So I opt to use the electricity I've already paid for vs. the propane which comes out of my pocket on top of the campsite.

I've had a rule of thumb (my version of an old wives tale) that heating (water or air) with electricty is more expensive and less efficient that heating with gas. However, it feels safer using the electric element in the HW tank, so if I have a choice, I use the electric heating option for HW. Its also a lot quieter.

Keep in mind that even while on LPG, you are using 12VDC from your battery which in turn needs to be charged.

I did notice that the heating element on my fridge was something like 400 watts which I thought was high but it is a big fridge. Since I"m on a 400 pound tank, I run it on LPG all the time but I'm paying $1.79 for propane right now

Cost of electric is zero when camping that has electricity. Of course it is in the daily rate, but that cost is sunk at that point.

Using this formula, the 20% inefficiency factor actually LOWERS the cost of propane usage.

I'm sure that what he meant to say was to multiply the $2.60 by 0.8 to account for the loss. Alternatively, you could divide by 5 and then multiply by 4...or divide by 1.25...

Save even more by just shutting off the water heater and taking cold showers!

In the end, it won't make much difference unless the electric is free and included.
