My husband posts on RV Net all the time and now I'm a new member....be "kind". We have a 31 ft. class A motor home and are planning a trip to Yellowstone in late May or early June. Have no idea what the campgrounds in the park are like. We do not need hook-ups. Any suggestions for a specific spot or if we should make reservations? Thanks

I love Nationa Park campgrounds and especially YNP where a bear or bison may walk right through. However, none have hook-ups (except Fishing Bridge) and your size will limit the sites you can get. For that reason, I would make reservations. The Park website will sort of guide you as to which ones will have some sites your size. You may want to camp some in the Park and some in the surrounding communities where you can get hook-ups. Gardiner has 2 RV parks, West Yellowstone and Cody have more.

There are 12 different campgrounds in Yellowstone, five of them accept reservations. The park service has a site with information on all of them that will help you decide which on is right for you.

Lots of great places, we enjoyed Grant Village for the shade of the trees and the smell of the pine trees along the shore of the lake. I think they are closed early in the season due to the Grizzlies going to the lake for trout.

Enjoy!

Exactly...AND in May the snow is still about four feet deep. Opens about third week of June.

Madison will be open on the West side. We stayed there a couple of years ago. Nice campground, inside the park. Can watch the bison along the Madison River. We had a 31' class c and had no problem finding a site. Staying inside the park will save you lots of commuting.

We loved Canyon and Grant for their central locations and beauty. I think Madison is perhaps the most beautiful. Fishing Bridge is a parking lot in the woods. Then we went to Colter Bay RV in the Tetons to recharge our batteries.

I would recomend that you make reservations wherever you decide to camp, as sites are limited the larger the rig you have. We went last year June 7 at Fishing Bridge after 9 days planed on getting a site at one of the other nonreservation cg. We have a 36 MH and found sites to very limited.
Woke up to 2 inches of snow in Cody June 7, had reservations at FB, got to the East gate and the Rangeret at the gate cheerfuly said "welcome to Yellowstone, the roads are closed" we went about a mile back to a resturant and waited a while and the roads opened. So be prepaired for snow and cold. Have as great a trip as we had.

the closer you get to the end the faster it goes.
Enjoy it what's left.

Ditto, we stayed at Madison with our 30'& dolly & toad,& loved it,even without hookups, don't miss the nightly Ranger programs.
Oh, BTW, May might be a little early, could still be quite a bit of snow, plus some of the CG's don't open till mid June.

As you have already heard, you may have to be ready to deal with snow that time of the year yet. You may want to rethink the aspect of electrical hookups, just for having heat at night! For that reason, you may want to consider reservations at Flying Bridge just to insure having hookups.

Otherwise, you should have no problems finding spots in most of the dry camping spots, particularly if you get there early or mid-week. We have gone into the park both in the middle of Aug. and after Labor Day into Mamouth Springs campground, which has no hookups, and have never had a problem finding a space. The drawback with Mamouth is that it is just inside the northern entrance and therefore makes for a long drive to other areas of the park. That's why we have to go back again and again, to get down into the southern part!!

The important thing is to enjoy the incredible scenery and wildlife you will see. Have a lot of memory cards and batteries for your camera(s)!

You'll have a great time.
