When changing your Domicile to another state(say SD) Do you have to turn in your present drivers license when you apply for the new one in SD, and if so what do you use as a picture ID while waiting for your permanent DL?

Before 9/11 and all the govt. bureaus you didn't have to.You could have two valid licenses. Now they are all hooked up electronically and your lic is canceled automatically when you get a new one from the other state. I know the last two times i did this I didn't have to turn in lic until i got the new one but it all happened on the same day

I think most states require you to turn in a license to get your new one. My state it takes about 15 minutes start to finish and I would think most other states would be the same although I might go for a 3 day waiting period on DL's. LOL

Unless SD has changed how they do it since I got my DL. They take your picture and issue your license on the spot

When we got our SD licenses it took 20mins total for the two of us. Fill out application, take eye exam, get picture, pay our $8/ea, turn in our CA licenses, received our new SD licenses.....that was early 2007.

The way I understand it, recent changes to comply with the Fed ID Act?? now require that you prove 'residency' (which can be accomplished by showing CG receipt for at least one night stay), show proof of US citizenship (birth cert., current valid passport etc.), and show a 'non-laminated' Social Security Card. Then you can get your new SD Drivers License within a few mins. after you turn over your other state license and pay the 'new $20 fee'. At least I have until 2012 to find a copy of birth cert. and get a 'duplicate' non-laminated SS Card.

I just wondered, because in CA you don't get your new license for three to four weeks in the mail.

Course in CA you have to stand in line at the DMV for three-four weeks only to be told
"Sorry Sir....you're in the wrong line"
"But there is only one line"
"I know Sir, but it's the wrong one!"

Talk about culture shock when we got our SD licenses in 20mins. Course we did have to check the 'schedule' at the fire department first to find out which town the DMV was going to be at that day of the week.....kid you not, on the western side of the state the DMV rotates daily between Deadwood, Spearfish & 3 other towns....set up at the fire department....BUT they get it done!!
Got our vehicle plates in Sioux Falls.....walked in, showed our paper work, clerk apologized for the 'high' fees (had to pay for 15 months in order to get on alphabet schedule) a walloping $232 total for truck and rig then handed us our new plates (that's right...handed them to us). Asked him what do I do with our old CA plates...."Tack them up on a barn??" OK......one is in Vermont and another is in New Mehhecio.
We set up our 'domicle' mail forwarding service with Alternative Resources over the phone/on-line prior to exiting S. Cal. Then got our DL as we entered SD and our vehicle plates as we exited SD.

I don't know how it works in SD, but here it takes about 6 minutes for a tag agent to process a new DL if no test is needed. If for some reason testing is required, the highway patrol testing center does not take away a valid out-of-state license when you test, it is not surrendered until the new license is issued.

In any case, we can use our passports as photo ID.

Modracer, you will be shocked at the way things are done in SD and ID, as well.

It took us 15 minutes in SD and 5 minutes in ID DLs issued on the spot

Also, registration fees are a fraction in both states. Our brand new 2010 F350 truck cost $120 for 2 years in Id! SD was about the same for a FL60
