I have to agree with the two of you. I think the lawsuit is a bunch of Baloney.

It must be comforting to know everything.
I was not happy when I found out I am "leasing" the last two receivers I "bought" from them. When I found out, I told them that it was a deceptive business practice.
No Bumpy, they don't tell you up front.
I have been with them for 15 years and had excellent service, but they do have some tricks.

Seems to me the Washington AG has it about right. I'm glad to see he has the stones to take on these hoods. If more of the states followed suit, contracts would be a lot simpler. It might even be possible to force these birds to actually provide information you could use to make a reasonable decision on, instead of having to do a doctoral thesis research project first.

well I don't have a Direct flyer in front of me but I do have a recent Dish one and I would "assume" that direct uses something similar. it sez $19.99 a month for 12 months, lock in your savings for a year. regular price $34.99. same for classic silver and gold packages, clearly states lock in for one year. also sez Free HBO, showtime for 3 months. doesn't take a rocket scientist or politician to figure out that after 3 months the price goes up.
and Digital home advantage offer requires 24 month commitment. if service is terminated... all equipment is leased and must be returned...
I think if one would bother to check out what one is signing up for with Direct, it would be very similar.
sort of reminds me of that law suit where the guy is suing his bank or lender because they got him in over his head.

I agree with Gau 8. We have been Direct TV customers for approximately 15 years and basically have no complaints with their service. However when we added a receiver for our seasonal home in TX, we were very surprised to find out later it was leased not purchased. We were not informed it was leased and nothing in the paperwork that we signed for the installation indicated it was leased. And yes I read the agreement, I'm kind of anal that way. The wording was at best confusing, but I assumed (my bad in retrospect) based on the fact our other equipment was purchased was that this receiver was also purchased. I did not find out it was leased until at the end of the season when I called to turn it off. Couldn't do that as it was leased, so I pay a monthly lease fee for a receiver that was not used for 7 months. On the purchased receivers you can pay an turn on/off fee which depending on the length of time they are not in use can be cheaper than the monthly rate. However in comparing Direct with what our son pays for Dish (and his own headaches with Dish), I will still stay with Direct, I just didn't like this little shenanigan.

why can't you then have them shut off one of your "owned" receivers and use the leased one for which you pay a fee?

I have had dish continuously for 14 years and have had very few problems. Last week I did receive a mail notification thanking me for signing up for their maintenance service. I didn't sign up for it and I immediately called them. It was taken off of my bill and they gave me 3 months of all premium movie channels because of their screw up. These extra channels will expire on their own after 3 months. I don't have to remember to call and do it.
Was the maintenance service accidental? I don't know, but they treated me well when I called them.

I think a lot of Directv's problems, besides uninformed CSRs, are caused by the companies they contract with for installations.
When we upgraded in April, it was done by a company called DirectSat USA. The paper I signed said nothing about a 2 year lease, front or back. No fine print to read or anything on it.
I already knew about the 2 year lease and I can't remember if the installer or I said anything about it.

I just talked with them about my anniversary date. She said that it looked like I had upgraded in 08 which would extend my contract. I reminded her that they replaced a defective HD DVR and nothing should have changed. She looked and agreed. You need to make notes on what they do and why and what you beginning contract included.
