Now that I am running solely on a USB modem with a data limit, how do I stop a download coming thru my e-mail from friends & family? some of these holiday "Pretty Videos" are kind of large, file wise. I used to didn't care, but now....I know someone out there has an easy fix.

One thing I've done is let my friends and family know that we full time and our downloads are via an air card and that if they want to send me something that is a bandwidth hog, to please email me first and let me know so I can advise them whether or not I want it. I also watch as my email downloads and if there seems to be a hangup - as in a large file - I discontinue the download and go to www.mail2web.com, sign into my mailbox via that site and take a look to see what large file might be there. If it's not something I want, I can delete it there.

I have "Earthlink" on this laptop & "Outlook" on the desktop. I'll check for options. Thanks

What kind of USB modem? Wireless? I thought E was wired service only. Anyway, that's your first problem. Get a web-based email like gmail. That way you can choose to ignore or download attachments. And tell your well-meaning friends to post those things on their own site. Big attachments are so 20th century.

Cradlepoint/Verizon USB760 modem. Earthlink, "Total Access" did have a control for download limits. I wasn't even aware of this. Like I said earlier, never had to worry about it. And if it's wired only, something is wrong. I don't even have their cable modem hooked up.

Check your email on your earthlink home page and delete the big stuff before opening Outlook.

In my version of Outlook (2008), the message size limit can be changed by going to...
Tools > Options > Mail Setup tab > Send/Receive... button
Then select which group you want to edit if there's more than one. For me, it's "All Accounts". Then click "Edit..."
In the next window you can mark the checkbox for "Download only headers for items larger than" and then enter a size limit.
Hope this helps, I'm pretty sure the older versions of Outlook work similarly.

Thanks, you were exactly right. I'm using 2003 but it was exactly as you said. This forum is great!

See if your provider has a webmail feature, you could then see the size of the files waiting on the server and delete those you don;t want. Also there is a free program called MailWasher which loads your headers, shows the size of the files and allows you to delete any you don't want. It also has the ability to add certain senders or whole domains to a spam list.
