When we go camping, we cook in. I do better meals than most eateries. When we eat out it is a treat to ourselves. We afford an average happy lifestyle by always having been frugal and sensible in our choices. But even if you've got it, is that a reason to throw it away?

The cost of "eating out" has sky rocketed in the past few years... Unless your eating off the "dollar menu" at Mickey D's or the like food will be a significant portion of your expense if your eating out rather than in the TT...

We have a local "hamburger joint" here where we live, kind of a 50's/60's retro place with lots of neon and music to match... 2 burgers, fries and drink amount to almost $20 for the 2 of us... Certainly not a lot of money by today's standards but a heck of a lot when you consider what you get and waht it would cost you to make it at home...

When traveling in the TT, we figure maybe 1 meal out a week to give the cook a break in the kitchen and we both share those duties...

Yup, eating out is expensive, no doubt about it...

DW calls it the sandwich route. When traveling a lot of the time, we will pull over and have a sandwich. We use the money we save to pay for gas. We go out more while home than we do on the road.

Your MIL is much younger than I am, you could get the burger, shake and french fries at McDonalds plus a nickle change for 50 cents.
My husband and I were gone camping for six weeks and were surprised at how little it cost us to eat but we were not often in places where we could eat out.
And when we could have we usually did not.
We do take the kind of vacations where we eat out for most meals and than we are appalled also.
My husband used to say that he did not want to know how much we spent when we vacation but he was so pleased with the costs of our last vacation he is planning on two months next year.

Try fast food in Canada the cost is insane. It is approximately $10 per adult. Both for cost and health stopping at an establishment to eat is our absolute last choice.

When we traveled with the pup my wife would make sandwiches and we would just stop at a rest area and eat lunch or dinner. Now with the TT she just makes them when we stop for gas or bathroom. Very rarely do we stop for food and if we do its fast food off the dollar menu but even then it is not that often. When we are at the cg we eat at the TT maybe one night we will go out to eat but we have 4 kids 4 and under and it just does not make much sense to go out to eat so they can get a kids meal of mac and cheese for $5.00 each when we can make it for them for less then an $1.00 for all of them. So since we mostly eat at the TT I do not look at the cost of food as we are paying the same as we would at home. This is one reason we like the TT we can go places and not have to spend the extra $ eating out.

I have an arm and a leg invested in the genset installed on the rear of my TT.
One of the biggest benefits is we never stop for fast food while traveling. We have electric by just turning a key. This allows us to run the microwave and A/C as required wherever we stop. Granted the cost of the genset could pay for a lot of fast food. But I installed the genset for Boondocking being able to avoid fast food has been an added bonus.

When we came back from the Coast after Thanksgiving we pulled over in an area where we could pop one of the sides out. Our daughter was following us towing their pop up. We cooked hot dogs, made sandwiches, walked the dog and stretched our legs. The kids love pulling off the side of the road and having a picnic even if it is inside during poor weather.

As for food we make large batches of everything and vacuum seal it. The meals can be prepared fast and are things we love.

We do not include our meals in the cost of travelling. We do the same on the road as we do at home. We fix most of our meals and eat out on occassion. We do know some people that eat every meal out, we don't. I like sleeping in my own bed at night and not worry about what's on the bedspread or bedbugs. When we travel we get to where we're going and we stay a few weeks.
