The manifold mounting bosses on the heads are pathetic on the Ford 460. Bad design. New heads can be bought very reasonably with improved mounting bosses.

I know the biggest damage has been done already to my head. Do you think driving it will cause furhter damage to the engine?
I am sure its not ideal.... but its going to take me awhile to be able to get the head replaced/welded... not to mention its a bigger job than I can handle.
We wanted to go camping this weekend but not sure what to do. Besides it sounding like complete crap... can I burn up a valve and get stranded by driving it with a broken piece off the head?

Hey Jerry,
Just curious what you found for updated heads and where you found them?
After further review... the piece that broke off my head does infact contain a part of the port..... so there is a big ole hole in my head!
Please advise!
Thanks
Scott

SO??? what has that to do with the question? Scrap it and buy a chevvy?? If I had wanted a chevvy...I would have bought one!!!!!!!

Eric and Scott. Google Ford 460 cylinder heads and numerous suppliers will pop up. Make sure you get a replacement with the same casting numbers. There are subtle differences between years. Scott, let us know what you are going to do. I don't believe welding will be a viable/reliable fix.

Jerry, I dont believe welding will work either. I have a friend who builds drag racing engines and used to work for Roush. He came over and we looked at my head issue. We beleive he can remove the heads from the doghouse. Not a easy job but do-able.
He is ordering two complete heads today with updated/improved castings. I hope to get the replaced in the next few weeks.
Now ... Headers?! Bank system.. crazy money! Looking for Good Qaulity Options....

My son and I plan to do my job when the time comes. Looks like removing the heads thru the dog house will be easier than hanging over a fender all afternoon. Who are you buying the heads from? Now you next assignment, find some "good" "cheap" headers. We are readying for a two week trip around Lake Michigan. I am going to let it rip and see what happens.
