Would like to go south for four months, maybe Arizona. How much should we budget? How do you trim expences? Don't want to just read for four months or sleep in parking lots.

Kinda like asking how far is up?
Seriously, it would help if we had a little more info. Arizona has everything from BLM boondocking to RV parks with all the trimings. There's something for everybody and most budgets. Now, if we knew your budget, might be able to help.

I've stayed winters in Yuma, Quartzsite, Tucson, Benson, Lake Havasu City and Apache Junction. They're all different.

MJM,
It really depends on what you do and how you decide to spend the $$ you have available!
Budget - have a look at Slab City or Quartzsite BLM.
Moderate - find a nice snowbird park with folks in the same situation as you - make your own fun with games and contests with the others - share!! Monthly rates are usually somewhat 'negotiable' in the present economic situation (with the boss, not the clerk)
High-End, Find a 'resort' with swimming pool, spa, golf course, fancy restaurant and perhaps a casino - spend big $$$ like there is no tomorrow!

OK - realistically, the low end is not much fun for us, but a lot of folks do it. Seeing the area around Quartzsite just after dark is most amazing!! We simply are not in the income range to afford the High-End, so we are somewhere in the lower middle. We do not eat 'out' except for a special event (birthday, etc), we pay a moderate rate for our space and have many friends to share an afternoon of conversation, a shared trip to the Walmart or other activities and with a cool beverage over a campfire in the evening. I can only say that 'Life is Good'!! Never again will I stay where it is freezing and snow on the ground!!

AZ will cost you a little more to get there, but it is less expensive than Florida. From the low end to the High. Marv summed it up pretty good. To give you an idea , we stay at the high end resort and on an annual basis site's go for about $365 a month 12 month rate. $625 a month on the four month rate...plus electric.
Slab city or Quartzsite , you can boondock, there a many nice parks somewhere in price between boondocking & resorts.
The Rio Valley in Texas is worth a look too.

Our forth winter in AZ coming up and we go for four months.

Gas there & back $2000
Four months rent $2000

Any other expense after that is same as what we would pay at home if we stayed. Cable, Elec, Phone, Heat etc. I don't count these as extras.

There and back + rent $4000 minimum. (your mileage may vary)

You can find a RV resort for $400 in central Arizona. Food will not cost anymore than it will at home. You will need very little heat, only between sundown and sunup. Yes, the sun shines every day. I have found we can live cheaper than at home. Turn the heat way down, turn off the water, water heater on pilot, check if the phone company will suspend your service, stop all newspapers, and arrange for a neighbor to check you house occasionally. If you want to boon-dock, there are many places in Arizona that are free. Quartzite is one and you could spend a week or two there. Two weeks should be enough for anyone however. I have stayed the winter in Arizona and not paid anything for camping. It will take a while to learn where all the free public ground is however. Most all public ground is free to camp on.

Consider going to the Rio Grand Valley in Texas instead of Arizona. Not as far to travel, ie less gas cost (depending on what part of Ontario you live). Lots of campgrounds in the $ 300 - $ 400 per month price range, lots of free activities in the cg's and the communities have lots of free entertainment and Winter Texan Appreciation events. There are always coupons in the papers for meal deals at restaurants - eating out is much cheaper than in Ontario. So is beer, wine and liquor purchases.

Sorry I have not wintered in Arizona so I am not familiar with their prices but Texas is a good deal and many have discovered this. Good luck with your search for the perfect winter haven.
