We are newbies to the RV world and first time Snowbirders. We have a 2000 Holiday Rambler and we want to head to the southwest for the winter. My husband does not want to leave until the first week of December. I believe the plan is to head down to Interstate 10 and go west from there. We will be traveling w/our dog and cats. We do not have any specific destination, just somewhere warm (other than FL ;-) Any suggestions/recommendations are greatly appreciated. Is December too late to leave?

Many people prefer to leave after Xmas or New Years. You cannot use the water systems of course until you get to warmer climate and many northern campgrounds will be closed. But you watch the weather and have a great experience along the way.

There's no time like the present, and what ever day you decide to leave will be the present. You'll be cold for a few days. Just remember here are warmer days ahead. I left Albany around Dec 2. and trying to get the wife to leave earlier. Spent two days in Luray VA with grand Daughter, then on to the Grand Old Opera, on down the Natchez Trace Parkway (great road 450 some old miles) to Inerstate 10 West. to Quartzite for a month, then off to other parts. Good Luck and happy traveling. Bill

There are 2 major times people seem to leave. After Thanksgiving when they celebrate both Thanksgiving & Christmas with family at Thanksgiving and those who leave right after Christmas as they desire to spend the holiday with family.
Many long time snowbirds will leave the end of October. We plan to head south Oct 23 this year. Seems we leave a little earlier & stay a little longer every year.

It all depends on the weather. Good luck and enjoy the southwest, many things to see.

Weather is the big problem. Also after the 1st of the year, anyone who is going to be the southwest is there! You won't be by yourself. But you will enjoy the southwest.

We are heading out around the 15th of Dec. but it all depends on the weather. We usually try to get as far south as possible on that first day, and would agree with your plan.
Since you don't have a definite itinary, how about a stop in the RGV for a month or so, then over to Arizona? We want to be in Quartzsite for Jan. 15 to do the RV show. From there we will go to Yuma for a few weeks since we haven' been there before, then up to Phoenix for another 2 months.
You might also consider the Colorado River around Lake Havasu City.
Good luck and have fun!

We NEVER are ALLOWED to leave until after Christmas is over. It's never too late to leave for warmer weather. Good luck / skip

Where you light depends on your wants and desires. A full service, expensive RV park in the Phoenix area, boondocking in the desert, ala Quartzsite, a very reasonable park in the Rio Grande Valley, etc. There are folks on here who have stayed in all 3 regions and there is plenty of information on all 3. This year we are leaving October 6th or there abouts and work our way to Quartzsite via Marysvale UT and Tucson, arriving in Quartzsite around Nov 1st. To answer your question, no you are not leaving to late and in all 3 I mentioned, you will be able to find space for either a short time or the winter. Have a safe trip and PM if you would like more info.
