I was wondering how many of our "b"ers geocache? If you do, what got you started?

I have found it adventuresome, addicting and a great way to meet new people and see new places that I would have probably driven right by.

For those who never heard of it, check it out.

http://www.geocaching.com/

My first time was while visiting my daughter in Washington state. We were on our way to Mt St. Helen's and we passed a metal statue on the side of I5. I asked my daughter about it and she mentioned that they keep meaning to stop but never do. It happened to have a geocache so I asked that we go ahead and stop. So glad we did.

Turns out it was the home of an artist that created statues using metal and wood. His land opened up into a beautiful park with statues of different themes. His statues are all over the states including the one he donated for Jerry Garcia's grave. Turns out I had previously seen his work when I visited a friends condo that had one of his statues out front.

The guy was really great, stopping what he was doing to give my kids and I a personal tour of his place. He didnt really know too much about geocaching but was surprised how many people stopped because they were looking for it. I don't want to ruin it and tell you where it's at but it's close to the herd of wooden horses. Just don't get run over by the train. :-)

We found many other beautiful places on that trip that we would normally have never known what was there.

Not a Ber, but DW and I like to geocache. Some friends of ours got us started. On our first camping trip with them, they took us geocaching in Waycross, GA. We have since found many more than our friends. As you said, you get to see a lot of places and things that you would never see. This week, we found the grave of Macon, Georgia's only Medal Of Honor recipient. We had seen the flag from the interstate marking the site, but never knew why the flag was there.

Not a B'er either, but My Children and I love to geocache. We have done it on almost every trip we've taken the MH on.

DH and I decided to take it up but have gotten no further than buying a book about GeoCaching. I think we got stalled over a discussion as to whether we could use our new Garmin Nuvi for the process. The Nuvi doesn't seem too easy to hold onto while stomping around in the brush (my idea of how things are done) However, I am all for learning new things that we can do together so I will have to find the book and take it with us when we leave tomorrow for the Out West B Rally.

The last time I geocached was about 6 years ago when I got lost in a state park on a very hot day near dusk with my two dogs (without food or water). I honestly thought I was going to have to spend the night with the wolves...and maybe even die. I had to carry my poodle for what seemed like a couple of hours. I swore that I would teach myself how to save my trail on the GPS, but I just stopped geocaching instead.

It was one of those "riddle" type caches where you had to solve a clue in order to find the next clue, and then eventually find the cache. I never found it.

I started geocaching because the handheld Garmin GPS eTrex was one of several free items from which I could choose as a reward for selling a gazillion pens from a certain vendor...and it looked interesting and fun...which it is.

Thanks for reminding me about it. I'll have to start again. I also live near a great place to put a geocache, and I'll probably set one up in the future.

By the way...it was very weird to be lost in a park which lies in the middle of megapolis.

I too am a Geocacher but I'm a long long way from 4000 finds. That number is awesome watt/ham!

The best part of Geocaching is the places it takes you that you would otherwise never see.

In one example, the Indiana Spirit Quest series has caches hidden in over 500 cemeteries

So to geocache, can you use your GPS in your vehicle or do you need a handheld one?

Geocaching takes you off the road. You need a unti you can carry in your hand and will direct you to a given coordinate. I don,t know much about in-car gps systems, but if you can inout the coordinates you're looking for and they have batteries independent of the 12 volt car system, it might work. I'm doubtful, though.

We've been meaning to check this out (we have the proper GPS handheld unit) but we have never tried it yet. Thanks for starting this thread - we're heading west at the end of the month and it might be a good time to give it a try.
