Lots of misinformation. There are hundreds of Canadian snowbirds ( not in RV's) who buy cars in AZ and leave them in AZ. Insurance is hard to get but doable. I would do as one poster mentioned: Either go to one of the DMV's or email them.

I went with a Canadian friend of ours last winter here in Yuma to purchase a car. Absolutely no problem, vehicle stays here in Yuma year round, is licencesed and insured in Arizona. The only thing he can't do is put "storage" insurance on it while it sits covered under a carport during the summer, as he must pay the premium, just as he were here. He is from BC. Numerous Canadian citizens in this park do the same thing and have for years.

I really don't know how these myths get started, but I will say that it makes more sense to buy the car down south drive it back to Canada, pay the tax and then register it in whatever province you live in and then when you go back the following fall you can now leave it there and just bring the updated registration and insurance with you when you go back down. That is what my brother was going to do, he bought the car in Phoenix drove it back to Alberta on a temporary registration and then was going to drive it back this fall, unfortunately he passed away in May so his widow sold it in Alberta.
He talked about registering it in Yuma but found it was just too expensive but doable.

makes more sense???

You would have to pay the gst and pst to bring it back to Canada...just so you can take it back to AZ????????????

I have the car, no problem getting insurance (go with progressive and make the agent check with the company and you will get credit for your Ontario driving record?
Going to DMV before I go home as it came with CA plates good for the winter (in my name)

Ya it does make sense!!! We don't pay PST in our wonderful world, plus registration in cheaper in Alberta so you might want to check your facts.

I can't speak for CA but it is expensive in AZ, so the reason for my post.

Don't want to "rain on your parade", but if you are a Canadian citizen, you will have some problems with registering and insuring the car. If you have an Ontario drivers license, you cannot register nor insure the car in Arizona. You would have to import it to Canada (i.e. drive it across the border), then register and insure it in Ontario before bringing it back to Arizona. You can get a temporary permit (90 days??) to drive it in Arizona after you buy it, but you need to insure it in Ontario.

Once again someone knows nothing of what they speak... or in this case post.

If you we're dumb enough to bring it back to Ontario for plates, you'd have to bring it home every second year for a drive clean test if you live in southern Ontario.

Canadians routinely own, insure and license cars, off road ATV's and buy houses in Arizona. Stop by the local ADOT office for details. Just don't try to drive it back into Canada for the weekend.

This of course won't work of you live in the lower mainland of BC or southern Ontario. You have to have the vehicle show up for a drive clean / exhaust sniffer test in order to renew the plates.

If you ask, the insurance company expects the car to be MORE THEN SIX MONTHS IN CANADA. An at it's home address as well. You can't buy plates and insurance in Ottawa and live and work in North Bay. They pay a different rate up there.

If it's not the truth it's considered fraud, they don't have to pay up. Your on the hook for 100% of any claim. Not worth saving a few bucks.......

One thing that some posters missed. If you leave the vehicle in AZ but have registered it in Canada and insured in Canada your insurance is void!! Moisheh

This is so typical on this forum. You get all these people saying you can't do this or that when they have no actual experience with the topic. Rather they are repeating stories from their brother in-law, cousin, neighbors second cousin twice removed etc.

The truth of the matter is I have a cargo trailer, street legal ATV, and car I have purchased in AZ and insured (Progressive).

I leave these in AZ for six months with no problems.

I hope this helps anyone who wants to do this.

Cheers,
Bob
