This winter I plan to buy a convertible and leave it in AZ for winter use.

I am looking for a 5+ year old Toyota Solara.

Any advice from experienced folks is welcome.

I know to check Carmax, ebay, autotrader.com and cars.com,,,,any other sites that might show cars I have missed?

Any advice on the process????

You're using good sites, perhaps autotrader.com being my personal favorite. Stay away from Craigslist -- lots and LOTS of bogus ads there. The ads on autotrader.com cost money to be published, so they're nearly 100% legit. Be sure you get a Carfax report on anything you consider buying (although Carfax reports are not infallible, they're better than nothing). Good luck with your search! (Solara's are great cars)

Don't want to "rain on your parade", but if you are a Canadian citizen, you will have some problems with registering and insuring the car. If you have an Ontario drivers license, you cannot register nor insure the car in Arizona. You would have to import it to Canada (i.e. drive it across the border), then register and insure it in Ontario before bringing it back to Arizona. You can get a temporary permit (90 days??) to drive it in Arizona after you buy it, but you need to insure it in Ontario.

I don't know where in AZ you will be but in Yuma there are Consignment Lots where private party's leave there ???? to sell. I have bought there plus I use Craig's List to buy and sell. Never had a problem with Craig's List. In fact I have two RVs and a car that I bought on Craig's List in Yuma at the present time
that I leave on my lots year around

Can't comment on Arizona, but when we wintered in Florida each year we had no problem registering and insuring a car and a boat that we kept stored down there. Works for me..........

You may want to try contacting the Arizona Motor Vehicles department at: Contact AZ Department of Transport

I purchased a side X side ATV last year which I leave down south, and they were very helpful. I was able to register the title and obtain off road plates, but they would not allow me to get a regular license plate so I could go on public roads because I did not have a AZ drivers license.

I was also able to get insurance, but it was difficult and there were only a couple of companies that would give insurance to an out of state driver. Of course, the cost was higher than if I had a choice of companies to chose from.

If you are successful in registering the vehicle, please post so the rest of us know. I would love to do the same.

Good Luck

I contacted the dept last year and they told me that if I had an AZ address and insurance from an AZ licenced insurance company that there was no problem registering the vehicle.

Just wanted to follow up on this post. Has anyone out there from Canada (with a provincial drivers license) actually managed to purchase, insure, register and get Arizona license plates for a vehicle they have purchased in Arizona (or elsewhere in the U.S.)???

Just talked to my sister-in-law this evening and her nephew just bought a 2002 Toyota yesterday and he registered it in Yuma and put insurance on it. He is from Edmonton, so not sure why Ontario is so picky. He plans to leave the car in Yuma when he returns to Alberta in March.
