Will be traveling this road for the first time soon. Is it a good road to travel in a motorhome towing a car? Is it extremely twisty or narrow?

I have not been on Hwy 299 since 1963 but we transported 10 ft wide 55 & 60 ft long mobil homes from Redding on 299 all of the time. also the logging trucks use it all of the time
BUT do not use Hwy 36

Starting at 101 on the coast, the first 35 miles goes through the Redwoods and is twisty, narrow and you have to be prepared to meet big trucks on some of the corners by staying in your lane. 299 is pretty much 2 lane all the way to Redding. With that said, if you just slow down more than normal and take your time to just relax and enjoy the scenery, you won't have any real major driving problems. Just keep your eye on the white lines and stay as close as you safely can to the right hand side of the road. Personally, I like Hwy. 20 through Clear Lake to get between 101 and I-5 but this depends on your ultimate destinations.

The road is pretty good up to Whiskeytown Lake. From the end of the lake it is VERY narrow with lots of sharp corners all the way to the summit, about 15 miles. From the summit it gets better but not great to Weaverville. From Weaverville to the coast is going to be one of the longest drives you have ever made. Did it once. Never again! If any of your passengers get car sick, carry lots of barf bags is all I can tell you.

Its not all that bad of a drive. At least there are no sections with drop offs that you cant see the bottom like some other road I have been on (US550). Going South to 20 is an easyer route.

299 is not a road to make time on. There are 4 Mountain summits between Redding and the coast. From Redding to Whiskeytown Lake is good road, from there to the summit of Buckhorn (about 10 miles) is very windy and somewhat steep with several passing lanes(4 I think) . Once on top the road to Weaverville is pretty good. Just outside Weaverville is Oregon Mountain about 3 miles to the top. Pretty steep down the west side to Junction City, there you come to the river and will drive along the banks of Trinity River for about 35 miles. When you cross the South Fork of the Trinity River you will climb up to Willow Creek not a bad climb. From Willow Creek you will start the climb up Berry Summit, about 15 miles to the top. From the top of Berry you will drive directly to the bottom, easy drive and immediately start the climb up Lord Ellis summit. Once you reach the summit of Lord Ellis it is down hill all the way to the coast. The drive from Redding to the coast Hwy 101 is about 135 miles.

It is a pretty drive, but may be the longest 135 miles you have ever driven. I have driven it more times than I can count, well over 100 times. If you take your time it is not that bad, you just need to accept the fact that it will take you 4 hours to make the trip. If you are coming from the north to Redding or down 101, unless you are planing on continuing south, driving down to Hwy 20 makes no since at all. Hwy 20 is 100 miles south of Redding and the drive back up to Eureka takes for ever. The drive from Redding to the coast takes about 4 hours, the drive from Redding south to Hwy 20 the across to Hwy 101 then north to Eureka will take all day.

How ever you choose to go, enjoy the trip.

Countryrose stated it well; 299 is a good highway, just take your time and enjoy the scenery. The Trinity River is especially something to view; on many sections there won't be much traffic so don't worry. This road trip is much better than driving south to catch 20 thru Clear Lake and then having to drive back north on 101 up to Eureka vicinity. Enjoy your trip and the cool weather out on the coast. We lived in Eureka for several years and made the trip over to Redding a few times, couldn't wait to get back to the redwood country and cooler weather and green forests!
