My wife and I have a week of vacation planned for the first week in November and was hoping for some input on places to camp in West Virginia. We prefer wooded areas. We are from Illinois and not familiar with that part of the U.S.

Is there some reason you have selected W Va to visit? You are much closer to the Ky lakes area. I spent a month in W Va one night.

North Bend State Park is a beautiful spot, but November will be a bit of a gamble as the weather could be bad.

Check out WV State Parks. If you enjoy woods and scenery, you couldn't go wrong with most of them.

You migth want to remember that in November, the weather in the mountains can be dicey. It might be 70 degrees, or it might be snowing and 20 degrees.

Welcome to the forum! It really depends on what you want to do and what amenities you want. WV has plenty of things to do and tons of beautiful locations, most are not on the Illinois side of the state. You really need to get a little ways away from the Mid-Ohio Valley area since most of the Ohio River valley is filled with factories. The closest campground to the Ohio River side of the state that I would recommend is at North Bend State Park in Cairo, WV. This area is nice and is filled with wildlife and natural beauty. Further across the state are plenty of nice places that fill the wooded area theme. One I'd recommend is Seneca Shadows Campground. Water & electric spots only but very nice and extremely wooded area near the foot of Seneca Rocks. We stayed there mid-October last year and it was beautiful. The leaves were near full autumn colors and was gorgeous.

And to Bumpy's remark, obviously they want another state to color in on their map. They've been to Kentucky! :-)

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the information. We will look in to some of the areas that you mentioned. Please continue to provide more information. We will definitly have to consider weather when choosing a location for that time of the year. Of course if it gets too cold, we can always drive south. lol.

Check around Elkins West Virginia. We go there 1-2 times a year and love it. We stay on private land in Harman WV but there are 2 really nice rv parks we drive past down in a valley off of hwy 33 about 3 miles east of Elkins. The weather could get bad at that time of year so keep an eye on the weather, you can go to Black water falls, seneca rocks, dolly sods park, spruce knob park, all in that area. We always go the first part of October to see the trees change colors.

Most of the beauty of West Virginia is located on the Eastern side of the state. There you will find all of the nice parks, forests and mountain streams. Seneca Shadows is really nice, you can hike a trail back to the summit of the rocks. The visitors center is also nice. Pipestem State Park is a really nice park just off the WV Turnpike in the southern part of the state near Princeton. I think it is open all year. Watoga is another nice park near Marlington. I'm not sure it is open in November.

There are numerous campgrounds and parks in this area of the state, some do not accomodate RV's too well. Especially big rigs! Better check to see if things will be open in November.
