I will be heading to Gulf State Park in a couple of weeks. Has anyone used the Foley Beach Expressway to get into GSP? 2 Years ago we went down and took Hwy 59 from Foley and hit every light. I the Expressway any better?

We skip around highway 59 by getting off at the Daphne exit onto highway 98. Once you go through Daphne it's a nice drive through Fairhope and on into Foley most of it with a 60 mph speed limit. I agree that 59 has tons of lights that slow traffic down a lot. The only good thing about 59 is that there is a Camping World store in Robertsdale that you can spend some money in.

Hey, THANKS for posting those pix! They are gorgeous!
I've never been there but have visited Destin several times.
Looks like the same kind of setting / water, sand, etc.....

THANKS again!

You're welcome. We've been to Topsail SP and we think the beach by Gulf SP is very similar. The water near Topsail seems to be more of a Caribbean green kind of color and it's more blue by Gulf. Maybe that's due to the time of year. We were at Topsail in July a few years ago.

Trlrboy which do you prefer? Topsail or Gulf SP. Just curiosity on my part.

Topsail has a lot more shade and the campsites are much nicer, so I would say I like the park there much better. However, the Destin area is a lot more expensive than the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. Also Gulf SP is much closer to a wider variety of reasonable priced golf courses and restaurants. The beaches are pretty much even but Gulf SP is better because of the new big pavilion they have. Also, it's much easier to get to one of the 5 or 6 Gulf SP beaches because you can park right by the boardwalks where you walk over the dunes to the beach, whereas at Topsail you have to take the tram or ride a bike. Gulf SP is about 2 hours less driving from where I live so that's a plus too.

My humble apologies to the Topsail cult members for this comparison.

Trlboy, thank you for posting the pics. I like the looks of GSP. I do love Topsail...but I could handle GSP, but since I posted my question, we have changed plans totally...we are now heading to the Smokies. Thanks to the forum and friends, I have narrowed my search for a campground to Claboughs in pigeon Forge. It has been 13 yrs since we have been to the Smokies, and our boys having been asking to go there so to the Smokies it is. Just waiting on DH job to let us know if we can go 3rd or 4th week of July.

Happy Camping and Safe Travels!
