Lewiston grade presents no problems. A good pull, yes..but there are always good pulls in the west. Biggest drawback is that if the wind is blowing the wrong way, the pulp mill at the base may drive you to tears. 95 between Moscow and CDA is more scenic than WA route. Comes in right at Blackwell Island RV Park, where we usually stay.

Christmas CG just south of Granger not a bad stopover. There are a couple of CGs along the river. Hells Canyon CG in the Lewiston-Clarkston area not bad.

The old roads at White Bird and Lewiston still exist, and are easy to follow on the map. In fact you can drive the Lewiston one (Spiral Hwy?) with Google Maps streetview. I don't just when the newer stretches are built; it could have been as long ago as 30 yrs.

Speaking of old routes, apparently the old way north from McCall ran further into the mountains, and then dropped steeply down to the Salmon River upstream from Riggins. That route was still snowed in last year (May), otherwise I would have tried it (it's about half gravel).

McCall is oriented to vacationers who own homes around the nearby lake, as well as visitors to the flagship state park near there. They also try to capitalize on their winter conditions. Cascade to the south appears to be lower key, catering more to fishermen using the reservoir.

New Meadows is more of a tired logging town, though the area also has agriculture. Riggins is a Salmon River rafting center, with lots of river rat bars. Granger is a agricultural supply center. Lewiston is a port with access to the ocean via dams and locks on the lower Snake. It is also access point to Hells Canyon via jet boats.
