Be sure to take the 210 by-pass around Lake Charles to avoid the bridge. The bridge is not safe. The state of Louisiana has rated this bridge at 2.4 on the National Bridge Inventory Rating Scale of 0 to 9 with 0 being "Failed Condition." The rating of 2..4 on the Calcasieu River Bridge classes this bridge at or near "Critical Condition. This is a high bridge and the fall to the water will be a highlight of your trip.

This is at least the third post about the Lake Charles bridge that alludes to it being unsafe and it is false. Type in: "Lake Charles LA I-10 Bridge Dangerous?" in the "search box" to learn the truth.

I'm willing to bet, that with the total disrepair the bridges on I-10 in LA show on the surface, that the next major bridge failure in the US, will be an Interstate bridge in LA. They give an appearance of a complete lack of maintenance and being very old.

Now, Now Texan, I read many of your posts and respect most of them highly but I have to disagree with you on the bridges. The Lake Charles bridge was built in the 30's and although it was used when I-10 was built, it is not up to current insterstate standards because there are no shoulders. Otherwise, there is nothing unsafe about it.

I remember a 60 minutes article several years ago about unsafe bridges in the U.S. because they were built with Chinese bolts. The Lake Charles bridge was one of them mentioned. Fact is, that bridge was built with rivets.

Scary stuff. Didn't need either bridge in LC. From Lafayette, I took I-10 to US Hwy 171, then north from Lake Charles to Nacogdoches, Texas the other week.

Scanning the info so far on this section, indicates I-10 thru New Orelans is pretty bad!! Anyone know about hywy 14 cut off I-10 at Lake Charles and goes east all the way over to hywy 90 and then over to Morgan City and on up to N.O......then of course get back on I-10 going east to Florida........Wondering if hywy 14 is okay for moho towing??
any info appreciated.

If you are lookin for a senic route and you have the time, you might look into taking Hwy 27 in Sulphur and going south. If you plan it right you could picnic on the beach at Holy Beach. You can drive the MH on to the beach there. Then go east to Cameron over the ferry. And then get on Hwy 82 till you get to Kaplan, where you will meet Hwy 14.

P.S. South of Hackberry on Hwy 27 there is a nature trail you can walk around.
