Scanning the info so far on this section, indicates I-10 thru New Orelans is pretty bad!! Anyone know about hywy 14 cut off I-10 at Lake Charles and goes east all the way over to hywy 90 and then over to Morgan City and on up to N.O......then of course get back on I-10 going east to Florida........Wondering if hywy 14 is okay for moho towing??
any info appreciated.

I12 between Baton Rouge and Slidell is ok. And the I10 into N O is ok. Just the I10 which heads out of New Orleans East on your way to Fl is a bummer. I held my breath all the way to the Missippie boarder. Went that way 2 weeks ago from TX and nearly wrecked my 5er.

If you are headed to Florida...you can take tie 210 bypass around lake charles, take I10 to Baton Rouge, take I12 from Baton Rouge to by pass NO on the way to FL.

IMO it's not that bad. LA DOT has been doing a lot of resurfacing over the past few years and there's only a few sections left to do. Also, as I'm sure you're aware, unless you're going to N.O. you take I-12 to bypass that area and save a lot of miles. You might also take I-210 bypass around Lake Charles.

Be sure to take the 210 by-pass around Lake Charles to avoid the bridge. The bridge is not safe. The state of Louisiana has rated this bridge at 2.4 on the National Bridge Inventory Rating Scale of 0 to 9 with 0 being "Failed Condition." The rating of 2..4 on the Calcasieu River Bridge classes this bridge at or near "Critical Condition. This is a high bridge and the fall to the water will be a highlight of your trip.

No need to take the 210 loop around Lake Charles. Came through Saturday. Construction is complete east of L.C. and the road is very good.

I'm willing to bet, that with the total disrepair the bridges on I-10 in LA show on the surface, that the next major bridge failure in the US, will be an Interstate bridge in LA. They give an appearance of a complete lack of maintenance and being very old.

I haven't driven Hwy 14 between Lake Charles and Lafayette.

US-90 between Lafayette and N.O. is decent road; a mixture of limited access and non-limited access 4-lane.

Don't know what you mean by "looks like there is no good way to get out of N.O.". If you're dead set against I-10 you can continue on US-90 or take US-11 up to Slidell or the causeway up to Covington.

I haven't been on Hwy-14 in a few years. I know the section from Abbeville to New Iberia is four lane and some of it is new. The section West of Abbeville use to be a good 2-lane. It does go through some small towns, but its mostly farm land and these are farming communities.
The I-10 from Texas line to Lafayette is just about all new and really nice. Just a short section through Lake Charles need a new surface. If you have the time I would give Hwy-14 a try. Just watch your signs, it makes some weird turns in some areas. Hwy 90 from Lafayette to Morgan City is 4-lane but is not limited access so watch out for cross traffic. They have been putting overpasses at some intersections trying to upgrade it to Interstate standards for future I-49 to New Orleans. From Morgan City to I-310 at Butte is OK 4-lane but watch your speed around Des Allemands and Paradis because the cops will be.
