Tomorrow we visit the VLA (Very Large Array radio telescope observatory – think movie Contact) in west central NM. Then travel on to the Petrified Forest. Can anyone suggest the best route to the Forest? Right now I figure to go west on NM 60 and AZ 180 to Holbrook, AZ. And pass thru Pie Town, NM . Stay at Route 66 Passport America RV park. Then spend the next day at the Forest.
BTW, if you go out to the VLA or otherwise, check out the Montosa RV Park outside of Magdelena NM. Passport America park, very rural, spacious, clean, 30 and 50 amp service.
Thanks.

That's the route I'd take, even with having to pay the pie tax.

bruce & jenna, I'm sorry to have to break your bubble, But we went to the PF 2 yrs ago & was very disappointed with it. saw more P wood outside of the PF than inside, so I hope you enjoy what we didn't. Keep smiling anyway.

On two different trips we spent all day exploring the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest and still did not see it all. I think that the reason Leadfoot was disappointed was that he never got out of the car.

Speaking of broken bubble, we'll go thru Pie Town tomorrow (Sunday). They close on Sunday in the winter. Must be worshiping the pie gods, asking for the perfect meringue!! Darn!!!
Thanks all for the confirmation on my route.

You've got the route down. Don't worry about Pietown'w pies. They have better pie in WalMart. We were very disappointed in Pietown. Make sure you get out and walk the trails in PF. Enjoy and if you can detour go by El Morro which also has a great campground.
