The Sheriff of Minehaha cty will in fact issue a permit to a resident living at 3700 S. Westport Ave in Sioux Falls. Here, I'm holding mine up to the screen...

I will stipulate that conditions may have changed since my SD permit was issued in '05.

But. Listening to some "expert" on the internet, and acting on that advice is a good way to find yourself charged with a crime. There are plenty of resources to find the legal information you need.

I'll give you an example:

Begin quote:
Many of you are assuming that if you have a permit from a state like Utah for example which is recognized by a bunch of other states (reciprocity) that you can carry in all those states. That's true, only if you are actually an official resident of Utah!! If you're a resident of SD for example, your Utah permit is NOT recognized by all the other states. Same thing for me currently. My AZ permit is recognized by SD as long as I'm an AZ resident. Should I become a resident of another state, my AZ permit would no longer be recognized.
end quote.

Bull. Wrong. Partly, anyway. Some states do in fact recognize non-resident permits. Others do not. As well, getting your permit information from a cop is a good way to find yourself arrested. That is not a slam against cops, they just plain don't know all the details regarding reciprocity and recognition, they can't possibly know everything there is to know, nobody can or does.

Get a copy of the Traveler's Guide. Get a new edition every year. You'll have some chance of having correct information. Most of the time. Use the Guide to check the official web site of any of the states you're traveling to or through to find what the status of any permit you hold to be at a given point in time.

Usually the official sites are accurate, usually. Mostly.

Don't take my advice, IANAL, don't take legal advice of some guy on the internet, there is too great a chance that it will be partly or mostly wrong, and the consequences can be significant.

Local law inforcement determines if you are a legal resident of SD. My problem was that I change my MAILING address from SD to TX. I belong to C2C and use a local campground for my lic, reg , voter registration and carry permit and have for 10 years. Once I explained the reason for the mailing address change and stated that I did not own ANY property in another state, the permit wass approved for renewal. The key was not owning any property.

Full Auto, thanks for your reply and that of many others, however I fear that you are missing the salient point. Here it is: YES, MANY STATES WILL HONOR OTHER STATES CCW PERMITS....HOWEVER, THEY WILL ONLY HONOR THEM IF YOU ARE A BONAFIDE RESIDENT OF THE STATE IN WHICH YOUR PERMIT WAS ISSUED! Sincere apology, I did not mean to yell. Just for emphasis. Please give this issue some thought.

You are wrong and the person you talked to are wrong.

First please understand that I don't want this thread to become a "gun" thread. Here's my situation: I'm currently a CCW permit holder in Arizona. I'm planning to retire in a month. Had planned to become a SD resident for all the usual reasons until I found out that SD won't issue a permit to someone unless they have had an actual physical address in the county for 30 days (mail forwarding doesn't count). Because of this, I'm considering becoming an official resident of Wyoming where my wife and I will be spending approx. 6 months a year. Can anyone tell me how Wyoming compares to SD in terms of state income tax, vehicle/rv registration costs and any other factors that we RVers are usually interested in. Thanks

My wife and I got our Concealed Carry Permits in SD last October on our way back from Alaska.

We did not have any problems with using a mail forwarding address. We use My Dakota Address in Madison, SD, which is a small town.

We went to the sheriff's office which is about a block away from MDA's offices. The sheriff knew we were full time RV'ers and had no problem with it. The only real requirement was that we must have had our driver's licence for at least 30 days. (We got ours in March on our way up to Alaska). We filled out a one page form which he submitted for the background check. We came back the next day, gave the sheriff $10 for each license, and received our temporary permits.

About a week later, our permanant ones showed up in the mail.

We also early voted at the same time in the same courthouse with no problem. They also knew we were RV'ers from our address.

Apparently everyone in town knows Terri at MDA. No fuss, no muss.

There is no REPRIOCITY Laws from one state to another... However, The 2nd Amendment "The peoples right to keep and bare arms SHALL not be infringed" seems the States are subverting the Constitution...We all should just do what we did with the 55 MPH Speed limit... It was repealed because they said , "driver's have voted with their foot"..No President, Judge, State, or Law Enforcement Agency is above the Constitution..

What I've never been able to understand, is why CCW's don't fall under the "Full faith and credit" clause of the Constitution.

This is drifting off topic into the political realm here and due to the forums rules can't continue this course. We need to get back to the OP's original post.
