Has anyone traveled this route at this time of the year? We're heading to Quartzsite and thought this would be a little more scenic than taking the interstate. Also does anybody know of a good boondocking or drycamping spot along the way?

Hwy 60 is a good road, but the conditions vary by the day. I like to travel across to the Bosque, since I live in Camp Verde, near the western end of 260. I believe the White mountains received several inches of snow the other day, but by now it'll be cleared. However, it may snow big time the day you intend to try. What the heck, give it a try. When you get down toward Globe, you should find plenty of places to boondock, and it'll also be warmer Have a good trip

We drove this road in October of this year. Datil Well National Recreation area (BLM), just west of Datil has a nice campground for $5.00 ($2.50 for Golden Age Passport holders)...no hookups. If you have time, stop and see the National Radio Astronomy Observatory VLA (Very Large Array) Telescope, east of Datil.

Thanx everybody for your input. Bonnie says I cann't drive 4-500 miles a day antmore and it's time to smell the flowers. seems like we might take a little longer to get to Quartzsite. The places suggested sound just right to me.

60 is an easy drive, unless you happen to catch some weather, in which case you'll either want to drop down to I-10, or hold up a day until it clears.
Pie Town has a no-charge campground just off the highway. If you don't see the sign, ask at the cafe. They also put out a decent meal.
Quemado, NM and Springerville, AZ have RV hookups. Quemado Lake is open year-round, but a bit chilly at 8K', and it's about 20 miles off the road. But you'll be in and out of NF's almost all the way through NM from Socorro into AZ until you hit the Phoenix metro area, so finding a place to camp isn't any kind of deal.
With the series of winter storms that have been moving through, you might want to check the weather before you leave Socorro for 60.

Hwy. 60 is quite high in elevation. [around 8000' at junction of 191] Very likely to run into snow at this time of year. Do not turn south at junction of 60 and 191. Belive me, that is the highway to hell. Very close to the worst hwy in the U.S.. In my opinion what you have picked is a fine summer time route. But a questionable winter time route.

We are now in Quartzsite having taken 60 from Soccorro,NM. We had beatiful weather except at night when it got cold. We stayed at a truck stop in Las Vegas ,NM which was quiet believe it or not.Stopped to see the VLA near Datil,NM., very interesting. Decided to stop at the NF campground outside of town. We got off the road and up the road and stop at the 1st campsite. Glad wecdid as this was the only campsite that didn.t have ant snow on it. Had to back the toad and the MH out there in the morning, very nice campground we'll try to go back in the summer when it;s warm. I have no doubt we were real lucky with the weather and I'm sure that if we didn't hit it at the right time we would have spent a lot of time waiting out the weather. This route is definately on the high altitude side as I saw a lor of signs indicating we were over 7k feet. But we;re here having a good time and yaking it easy.
