RE: Mama got scammed

Yes, Nigeria is a flag. === PayPal should work the same for any monetary exchanges regardless of the site. Problem is PayPal wasnt really involved. The buyer took over as if he was PayPal and represented them in all transactions.

Mama got scammed

Mama got scammed big time. It all started with the sale of a pair of Diamond Stud Earrings on Craiglists. She got two different inquiries and one offered to buy. The one that offered to buy knew exactly what they were doing. It started out casual with an exchange of emails, then chats then shipment of the merchandise. After the first agreement between the seller/buyer the buyer submitted an email to the seller and the the From: address of the email contained Paypal as well as two others. This is what made the request look official. If you do a mouseover the address does read "Service@Paypal.com" which is a valid account. One email address had a display name of Alexander William, but the actual address was fredwillis224@gmail.com. The second was pp2shipmentinformation@secureroot.com which could lead you to believe it was from a paypal. During either email or chat the buyer indicated he was in Ohio and provided an address. He stated these are for his sister in Nigeria who is getting married. When I later Google Earth the location it was a vacant lot with no homes to be seen. The buyer continued to submit emails under the paypal address, speaking in 3rd Person indicating the buyer has done their part and you must comply doing yours pressuring the seller into taking action. So off they go to Nigeria. Once in Nigeria the seller sent another email under paypay indicating the seller must pay Duties of $250.00 but this would be credited back to the paypal account and the seller would be reimbursed. The threat was if this is not paid the earrings cannot be forwarded or returned to the seller. So off goes $250.00 thru Western Union. The Western Union email received. http://i.imgur.com/OKRdqs.jpg Western Union applied a "Challenge Question" and secret answer indicating the funds could not be collected without this information. This never happened. Poor mama - she is out about $1900.00 and absolutely sick about it. Pretty costly mistake - shes not stupid just a little naive. If you are PC literate you can see flaws but the more casual user may spot details such as the ® registered symbol on the PayPal email and may not question everyone to being crooked and be trusting. Lesson learned. These scammers are smart. They know what to include such as a stateside address, know how to scare others into actions they may feel wrong, but may not fully understand. Gmail is a pretty messy page and it contributes to the uncertainty of email addresses and source of information. We have made copies of the correspondence and filed a formal complaint with the local Sheriffs office. I dont expect much, but who knows.

RE: Access to book marked sites.

Somewhere I thought I read where you were using IE. If that was the case the configuration pages are under Tools/Internet Options and there are 6 tabs. Some but not all have buttons to reset to default settings. I just thought perhaps one of yours has been altered and that might be what is blocking you from successful browsing. Check in particular - Security and the Advanced tabs. I dont know if Google has a vertical bookmarks/favorites option.

RE: Access to book marked sites.

If the browser made a difference it sounds like a setting in your every day browser. You might go thru the configuration pages and reset the settings to "Default". This might clear up the issue. Then go thru setting a couple at a time to your liking.

RE: Trailer brakes or controller?

Trailer lights are pretty much a "pass-thru" your 7 pin connector from the TV to the trailer. If you are connected to the TV the RV/trailer battery should not be a factor. The lights and braking are running from the TV power. Check your fuse feeding the brake controller and braking circuit - it is under the hood (most likely) in the TV fuse box. Also confirm that you have a working 3rd (over the cab) brake light.

RE: Looking for a good unerase utility

alid, I will do and post back any newly learned information. Thanks. === Edit Update: The program/link posted above is to prepare a CD for the Windows Defender Offline/Files. Then you insert a blank CD and run the program above saved to your pc. There are 4 major steps - - Download Windows Defender Offline file from the link above - Insert a blank CD - Launch the program downloaded above - Follow the prompts When the program is running you will see messages - - Downloading files (198-205MB) - Processing files - Burning CD - Validating Files You are then instructed to insert the CD (if removed) Reboot to the CD (you will see 1 prompt to boot to CD) Starting Windows Windows Defender Offline will start...nothing to do except click OK Mine came back clean :) but I will keep the disk handy

RE: Campground related spam/phishing

I'm running into something new and wonder if anybody knows anything about it. It involves campgrounds with open wifi access. At one campground I used email, accessed amazon, and accessed youtube. I then start getting bogus emails about my amazon order being cancelled and my youtube video being approved. At another campground I accessed email and usps, and started getting bogus emails about a problem with my usps shipment. I can think of 4 possibilities: 1) I have a virus that 4 different virus and malware checkers don't find. doesnt sound like a virus 2) The campground systems have a virus. Campgrounds may not have anymore than a router and modem so there really isnt any place for a virus to reside 3) The campgrounds are harvesting and selling the information. Dont think there would be enough money in it 4) Somebody at the campground is using a wifi sniffer. Possible, but what would they do with the information collected? Does anybody know what's behind this? You can thank Google and Microsoft for much of this. Google is the best there is at this profession. Microsoft makes so much money from Google to allow this, MS will NOT allow you to turn off tracking so it is retentive between sessions. Each time you reboot IE resets to "trackable" so you have to remember every time you start your browser.

RE: Spring pins for landing gears

I would agree with Smuggs. The weight is held on the inner and outer tubes, not the band that holds the pins. They certainly dont over build them.

RE: Looking for a good unerase utility

Ok so you were able to change the attrib so that you can now see the data. What did you do to remove the malware? At this point you don't know where you stand. You may have root kits or keystroke loggers.. who knows. Even if you are able to "clean" the system... Most Security experts will tell you the best thing to do is to format and re-install the OS. I know that is a big PIA but that's the only way to make sure you are completely safe. I started with rkill (mentioned in my second post) - an av program that kills processes but itself doesnt fix the problems. They tell you on their site/instructions to rename the executable file so the virus programs wont know what program to look for (this is part of the problem in that they will alter Norton, AVG, Windows key files, etc so they wont run). After running rkill I was able to get to get to perform a System Restore which I couldnt do the first attempt. I also ran MBAM to be sure and it was clean. The key point was being able to get to do a restore - which is much like reformatting a drive and an O/S installation.

RE: Looking for a good unerase utility

Thanks, WA8YXM, I see this now. The attributes for Windows files are RASH (Read only, Archive, System and Hidden). The minus sign negates the command. I realized the files were still there when I tried to copy back from my backup drive - standalone USB 250GB drive. It indicated there wasnt enough space - quick indicator. It was a pretty scary moment when I tried to view each drive ad found them empty.

RE: Looking for a good unerase utility

Thanks, all. Just discovered that is exactly what happened - all my folders/files were hidden. Here is the virus program screen: http://i.imgur.com/EDtees.jpg First it rebooted my PC - I thought perhaps we had a power failure as we do out here in the woods. Then it went into a loop displaying an error message on the screen about 50 iterations before I could get it stopped. I could see there was data by the size bars thru My Computer but when switching to the drives they appeared blank. I ran rkill and it stopped some process but couldnt see any data on my drives. It didnt hide the C: or I: drives but D, E, F, G, & H. I had to run rkill from a command window but it did work. Im now back up 100 %. Thanks.

Looking for a good unerase utility

I need a good unerase utility. From what Ive seen they done seem to restore the original file name and almost all files seen to be recovered as binary rather than ascii text for text files. When I look at "My PC" all the drives (5) appear to have the data, but when I browse with Explorer they are blank. I have most of the important stuff on a backup but there are some recent updates that I will lose if not properly recovered. Suggestions?
