RE: Recalculating

I used TTS VoiceEditor and edited out "Recalculating". Me too. Now she says "You stupid twit, that's not the way I told you to go!" The British accent is a nice touch too.

RE: Diesel Emissions Impact on Health New Low Emissions Engines

I have a part-time job driving charter buses. When the new buses with dpf filters arrived, we were having chronic problems with the buses going into regen and then going into "limp" mode essentially disabling the bus because the regen cycle couldn't complete within a certain period of time. Now, when the bus starts its regen cycle and we're driving in the city running shuttles, we have to override the transmission and hold the bus in a lower gear and work the engine much harder so that the regen cycle can complete before the vehicle goes into limp mode. If it goes into limp mode, we have to park the bus, walk to the back and start a manual regen cycle. The bus will sit there for 45 - 90 minutes screaming while the dpf filter gets cooked out. The first time we ran such a regen, the bus burned a 2 foot hole in the asphalt in the parking lot so now we have regen over gravel or dirt. Needless to say, we waste a ton of fuel. And we're saving the environment with this stuff how??????

RE: What was your first car?

My mom bought a '65 Chevy Belair 2 door brand new for $2400 and I got my driver's license in it when I was in high school. I still have the car.

RE: Keeping it clean on the road?

I've often used a do-it-yourself car wash that has a high bay.

RE: Moaning and groaning while towing a TT.

Eternalbond...yep that's what you need...It's what I use when I hear the moaning and groaning. A little 6 inch piece over the mouth and I don't hear the moaning and groaning for hours, if I reapply often enough I don't hear it all trip. ;) JinD If she finds out about this helpful tip, you might end up with your foot in yours! :)

RE: Used Diesel Horror Stories?

I bought a 2000 Ford Excursion with a 7.3 diesel in 2006 with 68k and now have about 150k on it. Replaced tires, brakes, batteries and wiring harness under the rocker covers. The only "nightmare" I had with it was a brake line that blew out resulting in a total brake failure. Other than that, I've really had good service with it and am real happy with it.

RE: 7.3 diesel chip

I have an Edge Juice w/Attitude on my 2000 7.3 Excursion that I installed 5 years ago and I've been very happy with it. It's got 6 power levels (with stock being 0)and the tow setting is at the #2 level. I find it tows great in level 1. I've got almost 150k on the truck and the transmission has only been serviced and is working fine. I tow a 7500# travel trailer and a 24' enclosed car trailer that often weighs 9500#. I'm real happy with the Edge programmer.

RE: Downloading Malwarebytes - UPDATE - ITs back

In many cases with the rogue program you've got, I've had to use a different computer to download Malwarebytes and then save it to a thumb drive, then move the thumb drive to the affected machine and run it from there. You can also download it from here: http://www.cnet.com/1770-5_1-0.html?query=Malwarebytes&tag=srch Decline the prompt at the install for the trial version and it will install the free version. Click on the Update tab until it reports that you have the latest version. Click on the Scanner tab, select Perform Complete Scan. After the scan, click on View Results and then remove. In some cases, I've had to go to Help and Support and do a system restore to a date prior to the infection. Good luck!

RE: Ford on top again

I have always owned Fords, and mine is a gas V10, however, I do hear a lot of complaints of those circut boards not operating correctly in diesels at very low winter temps. they have been going to the Dodge diesel. I own two 2000 Ford diesels. I've never had any cold weather problems with either truck.

RE: New Tow Vehicle 2003 Excursion

I have a 2000 Excursion and pull a 25' travel trailer that weighs up to 7500# and an enclosed car trailer that weighs 9500# loaded. My wagon tows dead level and I've not seen any need to upgrade the springs on it and I've towed with it for many years. I installed Bilstein shocks on it and have been happy with them. You'll love towing with your Excursion.

RE: Diesel Engine Idling Necessary in RV Parks?

I have an EGT gauge on one of my diesels and the earlier comments saying that by the time to the campsite will allow the turbo to cool are right on target. The "coking" of the oil in the turbo occurs when the engine is shut down immediately after the engine has been worked hard and the turbo is still very hot. Since it's both cooled and lubricated by the engine oil, the sudden loss of oil flow allows the conduction of heat into the bearings and can also cook the oil residue that's left in the turbo so spooling down the turbo is a good idea. That being said, when I've pulled off the interstate and immediately into a fuel stop, I've rarely had to idle the engine more than a few minutes to get the EGT down to 300 and both of my diesels are 12 years old. Unless you had a really hard pull into the campground, I wouldn't worry about shutting down as soon as you get your rig spotted.

RE: Window air conditioners in small travel trailers

Check out Portable Air Conditioners (example) Used to cool small rooms or apartments. Exhausts heat out a small hose 3-4 inch through a window. Install a small round plastic port for the exhaust, screw the lid closed when not in use, ports are cheap, found in boat hardware. I bought a heat pump version of one of these. We used it for two months and hated it. I chalked it up to experience and replaced it with a regular window AC unit that performs about 300% better than the portable which was a total waste of money. The design flaw with the portable units is that the air for the condenser draws from the conditioned air inside and is discharged through the hose to the outside. It's like running a window AC unit with a fan stuck in another window blowing to the outside on high speed. Outside air then infiltrates and the portable unit has to work much harder and doesn't cool very well. In the meantime, I've got a "great" $500 portable heat pump that I'd sell cheap.

RE: Which generator

I've had a Magna 3000 digital inverter generator for almost 3 years now and love it. It has a 30A plug on the side of it and will run our AC and my wife's hair dryer at the same time. And, it's very quiet and portable.

RE: Idling Regulations

Here's the guide we use for commercial motor coaches. In some jurisdictions, the regulations apply to my diesel Excursion. We recently had a driver who was in Chicago and his bus was shut down for several hours. He started the bus, walked back to use the bathroom and when he returned to the front, the low air buzzer was still going off because the bus hadn't yet built enough air and a Chicago policeman was writing him a $250 ticket because his bus had been idling for 3 minutes and 14 seconds! http://www.atri-online.org/research/results/idling_chart.pdf You might want to print this guide and keep it in your motor home as you could be subject to idle-law regulations in many areas. Auxiliary diesel powered generation and refrigeration are exempt, just don't idle the main engine.

RE: Where is Winows Explorer in Win 7

For every Windows 7 system that I've installed, there's a default folder icon in the taskbar that starts Windows Explorer. It's the icon that looks like a folder. If it's not there, go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer. If you'd like a shortcut to it in your taskbar, click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/right click on Windows Explorer then left click on Pin to Taskbar.

RE: 2003 Ford F250 7.3

Sorry to be a nonconformist, but I have a 2000 Ford E350 7.3 with 115k and a 2000 Ford Excursion 7.3 with 148k and an Edge Juice w/attitude programmer. Both have been used for towing and both have only had scheduled transmission maintenance and both work and tow great. My previous two 3/4 ton Suburbans had their transmissions rebuilt before 100k. I think you'll be very happy with that truck!

RE: Fresh water hose inlet question

Thanks for the post. We had our TT hooked up to the hose last weekend and I noticed that since that time the water pump will "burp" every now and then so I knew there had to be a leak somewhere. I couldn't find anything in the trailer so after reading all of your fine posts, I left the pump on for 10 minutes and saw water dribbling out of the hose hookup so it looks like my check valve didn't seat. I'm heading over to Lowes to pick up a plug.

RE: Ford diesel most reliable?

While this may be an anecdotal opinion, our local Ford dealership, which has a separate Ford Truck service facility, finally got one of the new 6.7 diesels in for an engine repair - failed piston. Since the 6.7 had been out for over 13 months before they got one in for repair, it's a pretty good start for a new issue engine.
