RE: Driving in Big Cities

When not on Interstates, if I see signs for a truck route I usually take it. A truck route will probably avoid low underpasses.

RE: Livemail or Hotmail?

Thanks, Canuck for the info.
I’m leaning towards Hotmail; I’ve used it as an address for one purpose and it worked.
We’re paperless on all of our accounts, so I don’t want to be without email for a couple of weeks while traveling. We always had a child or grandchild house-sitting for us before, so I could use my old email address until the new ISP was connected. This time, we’ll be disconnecting our ISP before we leave. If the Hotmail works out OK, I’ll probably keep it and not change me email address every time we go from one home to the other.

RE: Livemail or Hotmail?

I won’t have an ISP for a couple of weeks. Since we’re gone for up to 6 months I disconnect my ISP (cable and internet) for the house that’s vacant.
I use Cox in CA and Comcast in PA; my email addresses have always be myuserid@Cox or Comcast. Web based still uses the same addresses so that won’t work if I don’t have an account with Cox or Comcast.
I have a tile on my phone for Hotmail, so that may be the way to go.
I haven’t yet found out if there’s a difference between Windows Livemail and Hotmail.
As for Gmail, I already said I’ve limited my choice. I’ve never had a problem with reliability with any of my software or applications.

Livemail or Hotmail?

Is there any advantage of one or the other?
I want to be able to send and receive with both my Windows phone and Outlook on my laptop Win7).
I’ve been using my ISP for email. Since I spend 6 months in California and 6 months in Pennsylvania, that has required changing my email address twice a year and I have to change my user ID each time, too. This year I won’t have any overlapping service: I’ll be without an ISP for a couple of weeks while traveling, using WiFi wherever I can access it.
These are the only two options I’m willing to consider.

RE: Cleaning a spark arrester?

I wash mine in any degreaser (Awesome, Simple Green, whatever I have with me), shake it and let it dry before putting it back on the carburetor. It's on a 3 liter Mercruiser, 4 cylinder (GM based) engine in my boat.

RE: 50 AMP to 30 AMP adapter

I've been to one place that only had 50 amp service: it was a new park, maybe they didn't want to encourage rvs like mine to go there, Anyway, they loaned me a 50 to 30 adapter for the night. I then bought one at Wal-Mart and haven't had a use for it in 3 years.
My rig came with a 30 to 20 adapter and we used that when we spent a weekend in the parking lot of a truck repair facility waiting for a fuel pump to be delivered and installed.

RE: I'm looking for an OBDII reader......

I went with the ScanGage because it does more than just read the OBD codes. If you go with one of the cheapies, make sure you can clear the codes after you read them. Some faults are infrequent- there's no sense driving with the check engine light on if the fault has been cleared and didn't come right back.

RE: Rock Guard/Splash Guard Recommendations

We've towed a Chevy minivan and a Scion cross country several times each on a tow dolly with no stone damage and only have the original mudguards behind each of the rear wehhels of the motor home.
The Scion ended up with many little marks on it by the time we got rid of it, and I think they may have been caused by blowing sand because we did travel in some windy conditions a couple of times.

RE: 04' 4winds 5000 mystery switch

My '00 4winds 5000 has the generator and water heater switches in the same place as tenbears Dutchmen.
The water heater switch glows red when initially turned on. I don't know what it does after that because we turn it off when the water's hot: it only takes a few minutes to heat and we don't use that much because it's so hot.

RE: Chevy 3500 Front Brake Shudder / Shaking

I had that shudder in my brakes, most noticeable when I slowed down below 30 MPH. It was caused by the rotors. I had the brakes serviced and rotors turned and that took care of it. I'm easy on brakes - even easier now, so I don't know if it was a Chevy problem or if the previous owner caused the problem. (He used to take it to the desert every weekend; pretty steep hills on I8 east of San Diego.)
My 3500 has the 7.4 liter VorTec.

RE: 2000 CHEVY 454 POWER & MILEAGE

I get 9-10 MPG, the TOAD doesn't affect my power or fuel consumption enough to measure. I've never felt like I needed any more power. I usually use overdrive, but only iuse cruise control on flat roads. It gets noisy going up steep hills when the automatic transmission shifts down to second gear. I try to avoid getting caught behind trucks that I know are going to slow down to less than 30 on those hills.

I love it when stuff works!

Our motor home has been sitting since we got back from PA in October.
It started right up last week; I drained and added fresh water and we used it for our annual family picnic and viewing of the boat Parade of Lights on San Diego Bay, from Shelter Island.
It ran great, the generator fired right up to reheat some of the food, and the single house battery powered the lights for the evening.
Cleaned it up, dumped the tanks and parked it. Hope to get to use it before our next family function at Easter, the grandkids are growing up fast and there may not be that many of these occasions left.

RE: gas cards or discounts

We don't have a gas card. We use our debit card and if we run low on the bank balance we use our credit card.
We just look at the prices as we near towns and when we see a lower price we fill up.
I like Wal-Mart because we can do all of our shopping there and get gas, too but most of them are hard to get in and out of with a TOAD.
Driving with a TOAD means checking for access before committing to turning in!

RE: 2004 fourwinds chateau citation 24bb

I've been waiting, since no one has posted, here's my two cents.
We bought ours with less than 10,000 miles on it from a neighbor and have been completely satisfied. I haven't seen any reason to change the steering or suspension like so many others do. I haven't had any problems with any of the appliances. I added an extension TV cable to the bedroom, and ran a cable connection to the electric cable box for campground conections. (Our motor home didn't have a cable connection outside, only an antenna.) I bought leveling blocks but seldom need to use them. I bought a support for the sewer dump hose and have never used it: I just dump when necessary; I've neveer had a reason to leave the hose connected. We get 9-10 MPG and drive easy, mostly on state and local roads, to enjoy the view while traveling.

RE: Added weight

Don't travel with your tanks completely empty. We always keep about 1/4 tank of fresh water for washing hands, flushing the toilet, rinsing silverware and glasses used at lunch or snack breaks. Also, if something should happen that you can't get a hook up, you'll have enough water for at least one night.

RE: Added weight

It all depends on how much stuff you think you can't live without.
While the longest we've ever stayed in our motor home was 17 days, we travel cross country every summer and usually also spend a few days vacationing. We've often wondered what else we'd bring if we were full timing and only came up with a few small items. The only one with any weight was a sewing machine.

RE: TV Antenna Question

...I don't have the patience to spend a lot of time searching for stations. I usually see which way everybody elses antenna is pointing, and set mine the same. Then, I turn on the TVs and let then do a channel search. We have some DVDs for entertainment if we can't get a good picture.
I've also noticed that most places that don't have cable because they're close to the city aren't close enough and reception not good.
We mostly only overnight while traveling, so TV is nice, but not necessary every night.

RE: Cab Privacy Curtain, Inside or Outside?

Most of our stops are overnighters, and we seldom bother with the interior velcro-mounted curtain. I usually put a foil covered cardboard thingy on the dash behind the windshield.
I've never noticed people trying to peek inside and don't worry about privacy.
