RE: Portible Power inverter

I wanted to run my DirecTV box off the cigarette lighter outlet for the TV antenna. I hated having it boot up every time I wanted to watch TV. That way I could leave the DirecTV box on all the time. I use a small inverter but found the 12v feed from the TV antenna was not strong enough to handle the load. Had to run a heaver cable to the inverter to the back of the 5er. I do have a full sized 2000 watt inverter/converter charger whole house. But I can turn that off and still have the DirecTV box on and recording in the night.

RE: Trying to plan ahead... all plans written in jello?

Well I called the Dr. office and worked it out so I could get in on the next Monday at 4:30 PM with blood work done 10 days before. The appointment is on the last full day at the COE campground so it will work but just barely. Got to get me some more boxes of Jello... Might need to try a different flavor.

Trying to plan ahead... all plans written in jello?

Have you had this happen to you? Your stories please.
My story and and I'm sticking to... is I made my main Dr. appointment a year in advance as I left the office last year. Been doing it like this for many, many years. Ya sounds good... for in July in IA... Made reservations at a COE lake in IA for 14 days in the time frame for the appointments. Also made other Dr. stuff for right after the main one so the blood work would be good for them as well. All are paperless (same clinic) so can see my records. Called the office and got approved for blood work to be done the week before. No problem.
The rest of the story... got my mail forwarding late Friday from SD (I might get a mail drop once a month) and in it was a letter from the Dr. office dated 4/11/12... a couple of weeks before I had called them to confirm... Stating the Dr. would be out of the office and to call to make a new appointment.
Oh.. thanks. Do you think the Dr. office which I have been with for many years could have called me... but just send a note to my mail forwarding address out of state from their office. My Dr. has been very understanding with this lifestyle only seeing me once a year...and I hope we can work something out. Their office is all electronic with records... ahead of the curve...
Now I have to worry all weekend if I can get in while back in IA in my time frame.
HERE IS THE GOTCHA...
Me thinks I might have been outsmarted by a paperless Dr. office computer system.
You see I had been receiving robo calls saying I should call in to make a appointment as it had been three months since my last appointment. I mean several times a week I would get the automated calls.. I called the office and explained I had a visit scheduled for July and only go in yearly. Was told she would fill out a form to stop the robo calls. Well I now think by not only stopping the robo calls the system now has it flagged so as not to call me at ALL.
So... pay attention for what you ask for... These FREDS (F*&king Ridiculous Electric Devices (computers) can get you when you aren't looking.

RE: How did you start fulltiming?

Back in about 2000 went online to research what this full time lifestyle was all about. Started reading travel blogs and thought I needed to group them for me and others. So started www.hitchitch.com Retired in Jan. 2003.. hit the road in late Nov. 2003 without the house being sold yet as it was getting cold in IA and the 5er drain hose froze solid. Was living in it in the back drive keeping the house clean. It was time to get out of town... and let the realtor sell the place without us. Went straight to south TX and in Jan. got an offer and sold. From there never looked back.
We ran the numbers so many times getting ready and had our doubts if it was the right move but Ya Know looking back... it was the best thing we have ever done... Not one regret...

PMB (domicile address) for Medicare?

I read this post on a full-timers blog...
The post... In checking into Medicare (DH enrolls in 2 months), we’ve learned that people who have a legal residence like ours (in SD) , where we never live and never stay, are having their Medicare Insurance canceled. We’ve been advised to change our legal resident to AZ since that’s where we live 6 months of the year or longer. This is why we are staying in AZ a couple of days longer. We will be getting AZ driver’s licenses and then head out.
NOW that post just seems a bit strange. Medicare is good anywhere. I just got my card in the mail for part A & B which goes in effect July 1st.
I also just revised my Ins. from my former employer to their Retired Supplement Ins. that is good anywhere. Just like my old Ins. but it pays above the 80% Medicare pays.
So I did a search to see where they came up with this. Did find some Private Advantage Plans that have been cancelled in some states. But never original Medicare.
But to to make a statement Medicare is being cancelled for fulltimers and they have to change domiciles...
Other things these people may have not have considered is the cost to change domicile states. Insurance costs, AZ state taxes, vehicle and 5er lic fees.
And the bottom line... they are domiciled in SD and want to change to AZ. What makes them think they have a physical address in AZ for Medicare or for a drivers lic. Wont they have to get at least a PMB in AZ. That would be the same thing for Medicare that they had in SD. May have a bit of trouble getting a AZ drivers lic with a SD PMB address.

RE: Campground Etiquette

We have bondocked for years in the LTVA in Q and gen use is just the norm and you have to get used to it. Cut off time at 10 PM is ignored for the most part if you have a less noisy Honda unit. Just the facts. If you want less noise go on back into the BLM and you can have it all to yourself.
BTW the rules in the LTVA (I was shocked) state camping must be only 15 feet from another unit.

RE: Almost there

A hint: We found the dump and water stations at La Posa South to be mostly empty on Friday. Seems most people come with full water and empty dump tanks so they they don't need the services till later in the week. Ya gota flush em before Ya have to dump em. So if yiu get here quick no long lines YET. Also the water is being shut off 6 PM to 8 AM to let the well catch up with usage as they do pump it into a large storage tank. I also stops people from driving in after dark and filling up without buying a $40 BLM camp permit.

RE: Quartzite showers?

For several years in the past some portable shower outfits have showed up in Q and offered showers. But what they failed to understand that most RVers staying in the LTVA BLM have bathrooms and showers inside their RVs.
They did offer a great service at like off road race events etc. where people come for the weekend and stay in tents and need showers.
But the idea didn't work out so well here in Q.
But like the above post the big laundry across from the Roadrunner grocery store does offer showers for the few who need to use it.

RE: Arizona snowbirds?

If you store your RV in AZ you have to pay personal property tax on it. Even if it is in a storage lot. Or at least in La Paz county.

RE: New American Dream

We went fulltime in 2003 and it took 8 months at that time to sell our S&B and that was in Iowa. Made a little after the improvements. But we had equity as we had a low mortgage. (larger down payment) So glad we got out when we did. Now in 2011 after fulltiming for many years we started looking for a winter house in AZ and got it with our first low offer. Offer to close in two weeks. Oh I know we said we would never get back into a S&B again but our money wasn't doing anything in in CDs etc. so why not put some of it in a property. The market can go down a whole lot more before we have to worry. And this is a place to winter in while we travel in the summer.

RE: Ethical behaviour, or just par for the course.

Left over firewood when a camper leaves is up for grabs, me thinks. Fulltimers all the time drive the campgrounds on a Sunday when the weekenders leave grabbing up all the wood they can find. Pretty normal event. If there is firewood in a empty campsite it is up for grabs.

RE: Direct city line, or just fill up the freshwater tank?

Twice while hooked up to city water in a RV park we had a leak and flooded the basement of our 5er. NOT FUN. So now we just put water in the tank and NRVER hook up. Now don't have to turn off the city water value when on a day trip, just turn off the on board pump. Takes less time and we also never drink the tank water... just used for washing and dishes. Works for us.
