RE: New to Dinghy Towing and got a question

Portscanner:
Here's another response that doesn't answer your question: Ready Brake users apparently like them becasuse they're simple.
Good luck getting your brake controller question answered.

RE: roadmaster invisi brake v even brake system.

Here’re my answers to questions not asked.
Simple and inexpensive come with tradeoffs. Drawbacks I saw when considering a ReadyBrake:
No toad braking until the weight of the towed vehicle overcomes both “an oil filled shock absorber and a 250 lbs spring before it will activate.”
ReadyBrake does not recharge the toad's power brake vacuum booster so after a few brake applications, you no longer have power brakes on the toad. You can add a vacuum pump for $220 but it works off the toad's battery.
ReadyBrake’s optional breakaway requires adding a second cable to the toad’s brake pedal.
ReadyBrake’s RV-dash-mounted brake indicator only lights up when the actuator arm on the Ready Brake moves far enough to allow the magnetic switch to light the LED light on the motorhome dash. “In light braking situations, the LED may not illuminate as there may not be any movement of the actuator arm.” Also if the toad’s brake pedal cable becomes disconnected, the RV dash indicator light will continue to light even though your toad brakes aren't activating.
All MHs are not “significantly larger/heavier than whats being towed” so smaller MHs need supplemental toad brakes that come close to negating the extra load on the MH’s brakes.
I don’t feel that InvisiBrake has these drawbacks, but, of course, you pay more. It’s great that we have so many choices in braking...and they all work well until they don't.

RE: roadmaster invisi brake v even brake system.

Easy: We like our Invisibrake (only one 1200 mile trip so far). There is the one-time hassle of installing it; but once installed, trip hookup or unhook is simple. You implied you'd have it installed, so you'll miss that hassle.
I saw the Even Brake as a hassle to hookup/unhook for each and every trip segment and then you have to find a place to put the box. You won't be able to avoid this hassle.
Even though you didn't ask about ReadyBrute, a lot of people seem to like that system. However, it's a surge brake system and Winnebago recommends against using surge brakes on their MHs because of the extra stress on the hitch components.

RE: InvisiBrake For Dinghy

We tow a 2010 Toyota Corolla with the Invisibrake installed. No problems in the one 1200 mile trip we've towed so far. A RV-dash mounted brake monitor light/audio lets you know when the toad brake engages.
The installation instructions are great -- I installed it myself and I'm only about half smart.

RE: Blue Ox baseplate on 07 Jeep Liberty

Check your base plate installation instructions. The pictures may give you a clue. If you don't have the instructions, get a copy from http://www.blueox.us/bx-r-BaseplateProducts.aspx?ProductId=1071.
Good luck.

RE: Vogel State Park April 3 & 4

Just checked the Vogel SP reservations site. Only 7 of 103 sites available for April 3&4. Maybe you should reserve.

RE: Roadmaster Invisibrake vs. US Gear Towbrake

Perdue: I believe your installer is misinformed.
Invisibrake activates the toad brakes when the MH brake pedal is depressed and releases when the MH brake pedal is released with a caveat: Invisibrake releases after 15 seconds even if you continue to depress the MH brake pedal for more than 15 seconds. If you want Invisibrake engaged again, simply release the MH brake pedal and depress again. There is a brake monitor light and audio signal that installs on the MH dash so you can see when the toad brakes are engaged. This monitor is tapped into the cold side wire of the toad’s brake light switch. The audio signal activates should the toad brakes stay engaged for more than 20 seconds.
Invisibrake brake pressure is adjustable with a knob and gauge on the controller.
With the exception of the monitor light installed on the MH dash, all the Invisibrake components are in the toad. You will need to first wire the lights on the toad for towing as the Invisibrake taps into the brake light wiring from the MH.
Our MH is a Winnebago View on a Sprinter chassis.

RE: Roadmaster Invisibrake vs. US Gear Towbrake

"Another issue is that the Invisibrake doesn't supply vacuum to the power brakes boost pump..."
Just finished installing an Invisibrake this past weekend. The towed vehicle's power brake booster vacuum line is tapped into with a tee and a check value. The vacuum line off the tee goes to the Invisibrake controller. For more details, take a look at the Invisibrake installation instructions, available on RoadMaster's website.

RE: RoadMaster InvisaBrake

If your Journey has exhaust brakes that activate the MH taillights, note that the Invisibrake is activated from the brake light wiring. See Invisibrake FAQs here.

Are You Towing 2010 Corolla?

We’re gearing up to tow our 2010 Corolla S, manual transmission. Have decided on Blue Ox base plate and Alpha tow bar, but can’t decide on supplemental braking and lighting.
So if you are towing a 2010 Corolla 4 wheels down, would you please share your experiences?
What toad braking system are you using? Any problems?
Which lighting setup? Looks like a separate bulb and socket type won’t fit. Any problems with a universal wiring kit to the Corolla existing tail/brake and turn signals?
Thanks for any insight you have.
