Sky Island Retreat - Near Asheville NC

Anyone been there? Nothing on rvparkreviews. Wondering how the drive in and out is. Website is okay but not too informative.

RE: RV Leaking Roof, Rotted floor, restoration chronicles

1. I hope the worthless piece of humanity that sold it to you without letting you know the extent of the problems, develops leprosy or some awful, incurable disease.
2. I hope that you have many, beautiful, memories with your children. Keep a journal of how it started and how you worked through it. Keep a camping journal of the places you go, the people you meet and the experiences you have.
3. I hope you and you family have a wonderful future, you sound like a great person.
Best of luck.
PS: Most RVers are honest and wouldn't have sold you a piece of junk. However, now you know what to look for yourself and friends when it comes to a used RV.

RE: 5-person Trailer for a Minivan?

Sorry but I think you already know what everyone will say. You will be extremely lucky to outfit the Odyssey with a decent sized popup. You need to remember the 3500 includes the Popup, supplies, bikes, food, and the people (who will get heavier, as kids grow). If you buy a nice used popup and upgrade later, you will make out okay. Try to avoid new if you don't plan to keep it long, you will take a hit with depreciation. The other option would be to rent a cabin when you want to camp. Be safe, start light and you will move up. Most of us started in a popup. It is the memories not the vehicle. Look to the popup forum for the easiest way to camp in one. Rubbermain roughnecks for all the supplies, duffle bags for the clothing at the foot of the bunks, coolers and another box for food. It can be done; we did it 10 years with twins.

RE: And it's ours...

KEEP A CAMPING JOURNAL.. I wish I had because we have so many great memories of our kids through the years but we sometimes forget, where was that, when was that, what camper did we have then, who did we meet, etc. Just jot a few notes in a journal (they sell camping journals at CW) and those memories will last forever.

RE: Class A motor home vs. car for trip out west

You are trying to compare apples and oranges. Rving is a different lifestyle than riding in a car and going from hotel to motel. If you want to get out and stay in the sights you will see then RVing is the way to go. You never have to worry about the hotel being sold out; 30 feet and you can be in bed. You have the freedom and expense saving of cooking on board. Campfires out west are frowned upon in hotel rooms. You have to decide what will work for you. Yes it will cost you more in gas towing but your honda civic also requires gas too. Good luck with your decision. We never regretted taking our kids in the RV out west when they were 14. It was great!

RE: Bad smell

Put some coffee grounds in a filter and leave it in the compartments for a few days. If you need to really wash anything inside, use Lestoil to really clean well.

Gluten free pancakes

Does anyone have a really good recipe for gluten free pancakes. I have tried a few of the boxes and they are okay but I wonder if I use Pamela's GF all purpose flour (I only use this, as I don't have room for the various other flours needed for GF recipes) and the remaining ingredients for regular pancakes including the baking soda and buttermilk if the pancakes would be good. I will be cooking them on a cast iron griddle.

Sold on cast iron cooking

After 34 years, I finally am sold on cast iron cooking for most things in the house and while camping. I was given a 9" skillet from a friend when I was having a time with anemia. The iron is absorbed in the food from the pan. Over the weekend, I found two Griswolds and two Wagners at antique shops. They were really grungy and yucky. I bought them anyway, put them in my self-cleaning oven for 2 hours. Dusted off the food dust, rust, let them cool, sos'd them and then began a seasoning process. We seasoned them by warming, oiling, baking and cooling six times over the weekend to be sure they were seasoned well. I cooked in them tonight and nothing stuck. I will start to accumulate a few more Griswolds or Wagners and put them away for the daughters so they have their own. I fully understand now why Martha Washington listed her cast iron pans in her will.

Going from F250 to F350 - would you?

We have a 35' Jayco fifth wheel. Friends of ours have a beautiful, never-seen-salt 2000 F30 with 95K on it they only have used for summer use and towing their fiver. We have the same truck, one year older, 1999, F250 ext cab. They are selling theirs (went to a MH) and we are thinking seriously of buying theirs.
Here are the particulars - is it worth it to sell mine - what would be a good asking price?
Ours 1999 ford f250 (never seen salt), ext cab, Lariat, 7.3, 155K, short bedm really nice condition.
His: 2000 ford f350 (never seen salt), crew cab, 7.3, 95Km dually, long bed, XLT, really nice condition.
Should I spend the $$ to buy his and should I sell mine for the extra suspension and dually? both have been maintained well. Would there be a market for my 7.3 and what should I ask. Going by NADA really doesn't reflect the condition either truck is in.
Thanks.

RE: Outside Grill

Ours is an Olympian; it was costly but I hardly use it, but it does work. We use the campfire most of the time.

RE: OH Amish area campground suggestions

Oh, I forgot to mention, if you have time - take the 30 min ride to see the Warther Museum. You WILL NOT be disappointed if either of you enjoy fine workmanship. I really wasn't interested in going initially but so many people said to be sure to go, that we went. I absolutely loved it. Such intricate work. I ended up buying three knives and have virtually thrown out my others. The chef knife fits my hand perfectly - so many are made for men with larger hands. SO WORTH the side trip.

RE: OH Amish area campground suggestions

If you don't need any bathroom/shower rooms, Scenic Hills is perfect. Free wood, laundry and a great location. Be sure to take a ride to Charm and visit the Kiem Lumber Store. It is so with a visit to see what the Amish do with wood. Be sure to visit the Amish hardware store (can't remember the name) in the area. The flea market is nice sized and we did find a few things. IF you want true authentic Amish things (I collect Amish baskets), take a drive off the beaten tracks and you will find little signs indicating various crafts for sale. It is a lovely area and I can't wait to go back. I have a friend (non-Amish) who settled there and owns a gift shop in Berlin - Ruthie's. I am looking forward to going back there. If we werent' going to Asheville this year for a our "big" trip, we would be going there. Peace and quiet, clip-clop. If you want any other information, PM me.

RE: Love Camping World

Glad you have had some great luck. They seem to be hit or miss. Sometimes you can find the same item on line for much less at various other companies. We were at one on Saturday and didn't buy anything; just went to browse around.

RE: Small Table To Attach Where Grill Is Supposed To Go

I know exactly what you are looking for. we happened to find ours at an RV dealer odd parts section. It has the attaching rail on one side and a center piece that sits in the middle to hold the table up. Sorry no pictures. Check with your dealer but I know the brackets are available (check ebay) and make your own if you are handy.

RE: JAYCO TOTAL DISMANTLE

Our out-of-warranty Jayco fifth wheel developed delamination under the stove vent on our kitchen slide. We had options to have it patched by the dealer here ($3000.00) or take it to Indiana for an entire new outer wall for $1300. We took a week, drove it out there and were extremely pleased. They asked us what else they could do for us. We can't tell where anything was done and our RV is like new Or better. Don't hesitate. Perhaps have the leak area stopped for the summer to avoid further damage and then have the work done off season. You won't be disappointed.

RE: Need a place to park near Phoenicia NY

If you go to the new york state campground owners 'cony' there are some campgrounds in that area. I would call and see if they will let you overnight. Some of the campgrounds do so but you must realize the water may not be on, etc. If you just need a safe stop over they may let you. Worth a call.
