RE: Shopping failures...

Microwave put on a wonderful light show last Sunday morning in stick/brick. Did a little online research wating for stores to open, but learned long ago that everytime I do my research and read reviews, a store will not have that model in stock. So just decided to hit a couple of stores and see what was available. For a built in over a stove, apperently not much. Found a model at Home Depot with good reviews, fair price ect. None are stocked in the store, albeit, I always considered a HD as a warehouse store? It was delivered to my house for free Wednesday, so not to bad a deal other than having to explain to my 6 min pins that they would not be getting their morning pieces of pre-cooked turkey bacon hot out of the microwave....

RE: Columbia SC Campgrounds

Here is the web site for the Barnyard RV Park. For your choosen route, like kohldad said, this will will be your most convienent stopover. You will have many food choices, and most stores available you may need within a couple of miles of the park. It is on US 1.

RE: Biloxi, Ms.

While I will not be camping, I am coming to Biloxi for a long week in July also to cache. We are gonna do the bay forts, the USS Alabama, maybe drive over toward the pan handle to see the Blue Angels practice and a full day in NO French Quarter. What other interesting sites are there to see using Biloxi as out hub?

RE: South Carolina Red Flag Warning

Looks like we may have some issues with burning by the weekend in mid-state, but most likely you will be ok along the southern coastal area.

RE: South Carolina Red Flag Warning

I heard that Horry County (Myrtle Beach) had potential for fires increasing this week but no Red Flag anywhere in the state as far as I can tell.
Here is a link to the forestry site.
That region of the coast has actually had quite a bit of storms/rain the last 2-3 weeks.

RE: wife worried about snakes

The other aspect of this is I am living proof that snake bites don't always kill. Not so sure the cottonmouth was as lucky. It is painful and not my favorite thing to have gone thru, but hardly worth mising great life adventures because someone is afraid of a snake. IMO.

RE: State registration / exise tax cost

In SC, my new sticker is due next month. Bill is $404 on a 2005 5vr still valued in the $17k range according to state revenue department. I recently tried to trade it in for a popup, dealer wanted no part of trading down and what they offered as trade in was no where near $17k. Now I see why 1-2 year old $40k trailers are for sale by owner on craiglist around here for 10-12k.
The bad thing about Sc is, when the state revenue department lowers the value of vehicle each year, the local county you pay property tax to just increases the millage rate to offset the lower value, so each year you may see a few dollars decrease in tax bill. Takes about 15 years to get it to a low amount...

RE: Early Verizon update??

I just had to go thru about 10 different people to get an update for one of my phones that wasn't available until early May. So only 3 months out. They were more than willing to do it if I stayed with a 3g Droid, but I wanted a new 4g lte droid. I have 5 lines on a family plan, 3 with unlimited data. Have been a customer for about 15 years and never asked for an early upgrade. My daughter went thru 3 of my upgrades due to bad phone, and 2 going swimming. Thought my droid 2 would last until May, but 17 months into the contract it went out too. I spent the same amount of money for new droid as I would have if I had to wait until May. In my experience, you just have to get the right manager to make it happen...

RE: Lexington/ Murrells Inlet/ Fort Mill SC

did not know that..you mean every year? even the RV? so if its lets say 1100 a year for the car and the RV is worth 90K its double? 2000 every yr that 606 you pay thats all real estate taxes nothing extra for schools. up here everyone pays school tax even if you have no children in school.state and local taxes are separate.
Yes, each vehicle you own and register, you will have a yearly property tax bill. The rate of tax is set by the counties millage rate. I believe from memory, the tax rate is 4% of actual value. My 2011 F250 was about 1100 first year, and 900+ the second year. Where they get you is that even when the value goes down each year, millage rates go up. This property tax pays for school, police, fire, county funtions etc..
Cost of living is probably much less than NY though, so it may still be cheaper than what you are accustomed to. We also get a lot of northern transplants.
Not sure about other counties, but lexington county has a web site that you can input the value of your vehicles and get an estimated tax cost. That may help you decide by county which is lowest, but if you want good schools, you are gonna have to go to the counties that are growing, which means new schools, which means higher tax bills.
An yes, you will pay school taxes, whether you have children in school or not.

RE: Lexington/ Murrells Inlet/ Fort Mill SC

Oh no, taxes are no where near that bad. On a 100k house, I think I paid $606 last year, they are about 1/2 what they used to be thanks to some extra sales tax we pay, 7%. A $45k truck will run about $1100 the first year and drop slightly thru the years. We pay property tax on every possesion down here.
Thanks, mking!

RE: Lexington/ Murrells Inlet/ Fort Mill SC

Lexington SC has 5 different school districts. I have one graduate from Ditstrict 1 and one that starts highschool this fall. The county taxes are a little high for my district, but all are fairly high imo. Of course mostly because they keep having to build new schools to keep up with the amount of students. Lexington county strecthes from metro to very rural, depending on what you are looking for. Best thing is you can be on a beach or a mountain in about 1.5 hours, large lake, many local state parks, etc. Mild winters, occasional snow/ice, but july to sept. is brutal with high humidity.

RE: Edisto State Park

Have driven by 115 many times, but do not remember any specifics on it. I usually try to get 87 if we can't get a beach loop site. If your children are old enough for bikes, that side has a really nice bike/walking trail that takes you through woods and marsh. There is an old indian mound of oyster shells out at the marsh point and some history placards that are interesting. Not much else to do on that side. Make sure not to leave any food outside or coolers, the racoons will get into it unless you place it in a bear proof container!
You can also bike to the beach as there are bike lanes along asphalt, only about 1/2 mile and flat. Bob owns the adult bevarage store and ice machines across from the beach loop beside grocey store. If you catch him outside, he is a character to talk to.
Have fun!

RE: After Retirement Employment

...I've taken my Doberman when I drive a truck and trailer a new vehicle out of state. I'll stop at a rest area to get some shut eye and she keeps a watchful eye on the transport. Bill:)
That is an exceptionally pretty dobie. I don't understand why people crop their ears when it's cruel to the dog and doesn't improve the appearance.
My Shelby has never complained and I think it complete's her look!
