RE: Where do you park?

I'm not sure that fulltiming just to try to save money is a good idea. The tradeoffs might not be worth it , however if you like to travel then go for it. There are many people who fulltime and work over the internet. Some of them boondock for long periods of time so it is cheaper for them.
Here are some sites that you can read to see how it's done - http://www.tosimplify.net/

RE: Fellow campers are so great!

Must be something about that campground!:) We camped there years ago and the big tough Harley campers gave us their eggs before they left. Funny how a little thing like that stays with you.

RE: Must see in California?

I'm working on making Google maps of the states with placemarks on things that we might want to see.
Northern California
Southern California
Feel free to import them to your maps and then you can add and subtract as suits your interest. Have fun on your trip!

RE: what about those people who stop fulltiming?

There was a least one former fulltimer that would participate on this forum for time to time but he got so much grief from people who thought that he was knocking the lifestyle that I think he quit posting. Too bad because the information from fulltimers who go back to sticks and bricks house is valuable to other people who are considering fulltiming - why stop, what you did to plan for stopping , are you happy that you stopped ,etc. We're not planning on stopping unless we have to but many people do stop for one reason or another so it's good to have information in advance.

RE: RV length and finding a campsite

I'm always surprised at the number of people who say that they don't have trouble getting into campsites with large RVs. Even with our relatively small 25' class C there are times when we have to park so that our tail hangs out past the parking area to get off of the roadway. Most of the time those sites are in non-reservable forest campgrounds like you have noted.

RE: Dreaming of retirement

Good advice to get a RV now and use it for the next six years. Buy used and don't spend a lot of money. You'll probably change your mind about what type you want to have for your big trip. Another tip - one year isn't enough time! :)

RE: Camping out west

Very rarely will you find any type of hookups in National Parks in the west. However staying inside a National Park is a much better experience than staying in a commercial campground so I would suggest that you try dry camping at least for a day or two to see how it goes. You'll have to watch your water and electric usage. It just takes a little practice.
This site very useful for finding public campgrounds. The amenities for each campground are in the popup windows. http://www.uscampgrounds.info/

RE: Family, the Future, and Treasure maps[quote from FinShaggy]

It sounds like a fun project for you now and the future generations. Maybe you could try starting a small one now so that you can watch everyone get into the treasure hunting. We stumbled on some type of family travel game a few years ago. An envelope with a clue about the next place the family would be visiting was taped to the underside of a bench along a trail in a park.

RE: Is this a story that Fulltimers can relate to?

I read the book and no. He was ill prepared and didn't do the proper research on surviving the winter in Alaska.

RE: Help Wirh a Blog

You might also want to download Windows Live Writer http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/essentials-other-programs?SignedIn=1 With Live Writer you can compose your blog post along with photographs on your computer even if you don't have access to the internet. This is very useful when traveling in Alaska. When you have internet access you can post several days worth of travel stories. It works with most of the popular blog providers.

RE: Help Wirh a Blog

Most people use Blogger but Travellers Point, which is a new one to me,looks very good especially since it's geared towards travelers.
Here's a link to a bunch of RV travel blogs - http://www.hitchitch.com/links.html Look through them to see how everyone has set up their blogs. You can do a lot of customizing. Post as often as you feel like.
Here are the Alaska posts our blog - http://rollinginarv-wheelchairtraveling.blogspot.com/search/label/ALASKA
Alaska is beautiful. You'll have a great time!

RE: Walmart overnighting yes or no?

We've never had any problems with safety. We've been very nicely asked to move due to local ordinances a few times. I use this site to check the Walmarts first. http://www.allstays.com/c/wal-mart-locations-map.htm It's not always accurate.

RE: Life Style? Doing what?

It does take awhile to get use to. One sure way to slow down is to take the back roads. Go slow and enjoy seeing all the little towns as you pass through. You'll be surprised how long it takes to get anywhere when you're not on an interstate.

RE: Has anyone else noticed this? (Does anyone care?)

We have a Class C ,not a trailer , but we've noticed the lack of windows in newer models of all types of RVs. Our windows let in lots of light ,frame beautiful scenery and make it possible to have wonderful cross breezes. A lack of windows ,small windows or windows that don't fully open would be a reason for us to not buy a particular RV.

RE: washington DC?

The first thing that you need to do is decide where you want to camp.Since this question was asked just a couple of weeks ago here's the link - http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/25949762.cfm
Once you get your camping spot set up just head to DC and have a good time! Almost everything is free and there are so many things to do that you should be able to find something that will interest every member of the family.

RE: Parking in dowwntown Wahington D.C

We park our 25" class C in front of the Air and Space museum. We have a handicap hang tag and park in the handicap spaces but there are also many regular spaces. The street is signed - No Parking 1-10:00 AM Mon-Fri 3 Hour Limit All Other Times. The museums open at 10:00 and the spaces fill fast. We try to get there just a little before 10:00 on weekdays and around 9:00 on weekends when there aren't any restrictions.
Are you referring to the Museum at Dulles Airport?
Sidney
No , the Air and Space Museum on the mall. We park on Jefferson Drive.

RE: Wheel Chair Adapted RV

We got a SuperArm lift for a lot of the same reasons as lzasitko. It doesn't block access to the door and the entrance can still be used by everyone else. The step well has to be filled so that the wheelchair has a landing spot and also so the person using the wheelchair doesn't accidentally roll into the well. That space can be filled with a hinged piece of plywood that can be lifted out of the way to give access to the steps. Installation is relatively easy but the lift is heavy and should be installed professionally unless you know you're doing. Extra bracing is required on the wall where the SuperArm attaches.
We've never done any business with this company but they have wide variety of lifts and even some videos so that you can see exactly how they work - http://www.startrackslifts.com/

RE: Stuck

It's a nice drive and really not that lonely - go for it! We've never been stuck. Had a couple of breakdown where we had to be towed ,one time 90 miles to the nearest repair shop. Got a flat in Alaska. RVers were running over to help before we were fully stopped.
I've marked a few sights on this map - http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=210711839070103512786.0004a18a418bf2a4efe2f&msa=0&ll=39.639538,-115.576172&spn=9.521644,15.578613
