RE: Leaving Camper Plugged In At Home Full Time?

You really don't need it plugged in all the time. I have the same conveter/battery charger and it gets hot if you leave it plugged in at home. I run a fridge on two house batteries all the time when traveling and boondocking and don't need to charge the batteries before leaving home.
My batteries are Costco #27 deep cycle marine and are 7 years old.

RE: Swingaway bike rack

I bought a sportrack swing away in 2006 and love it. Was much cheaper than Thule. Good for 3 bikes and holds it in place much better than the rubber straps. Personally, I know it was build better than Thule. I think Thule has now bought out Sportrack.

RE: looking at 1990 Road Trek, $8500

I have a 1990 Dodge B250 318 ci. with 125,000 miles and I would drive it anywhere. Planning on a 10000 mile trip this summer. There are always people who will try to throw fear into buying a used older vehicle. Have it checked by your mechanic. That being said the transmission is probably ready for an overhaul for that year. It is a common problem. Cost about $2500.00 Trust me it is good for long distance if it is in good repair.
Sure beats paying $90,000.00 for a new Roadtrek.

RE: What Did You Do To Your Class B Today ?

Changed 3 leaking fuel hoses. We were going to take her out to go cycling yesterday but sprung a leak in the fuel lines at the filter. That was the end of our cycling. Will go today. 26 degrees here in Toronto.

RE: Roadtrek with kids

Gasoline.
No diesel.
Need ages to give specific advice.
Seat belt attachments need to be professionally done --- not just bolted to sheet metal but appropriately reinforced as per how an OEM would do it.
OEM bolt to floor normally have reinforcements on both sides.
Be sure you have multi gas detector (CO, propane, fire, etc.)
Think through the whole thing... like what if you have 1 toilet and 2 urgent needs. (emergency camp bag based toilet).
Also, auxiliary power sufficiency (plugs and output) for kids entertainment, from videos to games.
Playstation and xBox360 draw quite a bit of power, and if not properly sized, can deplete the car / coach batteries fast.
Think through water, cold drinks snacks, and also waste disposal.
Frequent disposal is best.
Flush toilets can fill up a tank fast --- use it sparingly for 4 people.
Roadtreks do not have big enough tanks for serious use --- what do you do when kids need to go and tank is full?
Need to ask yourself:
How many flushes do you have water / tank capacity for.
How fast do the tanks fill or run out of water?
How many days, how many times will you be looking for a dumping station?
How inconvenient?
Can capacity be added (if you are buying new, or retrofit used)
How does that affect the weight / payload equation
A lot of questions...
I just showed this to my wife. She said that's it,were selling the camper tomorrow. We only have a porta potti and what happens if I am sitting on the throne and you need to go. At our age we always have urgent needs.
No gas detector. My kids had no video games or xbox and they entertained themselves with license plate games etc.
If the kids need to go in a hurry there is always some bushes or trees along the road.
Thats it, all questions answered.
PS. We have 6 kids that all had a turn sleeping in the rear window of the car. If I had to brake real fast they would roll down on the floor and give me heck for waking them up.
The youngest now is 40 and the oldest is 52 and none are brain damaged.
Buy it and have a good time.

RE: Which Class B should we purchase?

I've always felt that if an individual has to worry about fuel costs, then they shouldn't own the vehicle/RV. I guess, IMHO, that also applies to the maintenance costs! (Quote)
What a stupid satement.
So I guess that means I should stay home. Sell my cheap camper van and sit on the terrace.

Gave the generator 40 minutes of exercise. Checked the tires..added air..drove to the next town to eat lunch and read a book during the afternoon. Temp reached 70 so very comfortable with no heat.
That kind of talk is not nice Bob. 70 degrees is not what we are used to up here in February. See you in Ohio. Say hello from us to Barb. Miss you guys.

RE: Screeching sound coming from engine

Hello everyone....well it seems when it rains, it pours. Lately we have had a few issues with the RT, and the latest is a screeching sound coming from the engine. It doesn't happen all the time, so the shop is having a hard time tracking it down. They seem to think that it is coming from the AC compressor or related to it. They have not heard this screeching sound that we have heard, but the AC when they test it, makes a short high pitched chirping sound. Nothing like what we hear. It'll make a screeching sound for several blocks and then disappears. We recorded the sound and had them listen to it, but without them actually hearing it, they aren't able to pin point it. Has anyone had this problem? They are suggesting to replace the AC ($900), but we aren't quick to have that done, until they can convince us that's what it is...that's them actually hearing this screeching sound. The first thought was possible belt bearings (??), but again, they have not actually heard it, so they can't confirm it.
Did you ever find what was causing the screeching sound.

How many can you take back to Canada? You might need to stay in the States for awhile, :)
No problem bringing back a few bottles.
