RE: raising camper to clear truck roof

its a good idea to use the space created----------but if your camper drops over the back of your truck bed-----like ours-----how would you access it ? (without removing the camper) Nigel & Pamala------Spain

RE: Price of Tires

I managed to wreck one of my BRAND NEW (less than 1000miles)Firestone Transforce with a rock between the dual rear wheels !!!!!We had to pay over$300 for a replacement General-----we were lucky to get that with the size we run 245/75x17 E PLUS $35 FITTING--------that will make me more carefull!!!!! Oh yes --in Portugal & Spain the tyres on an axle must be THE SAME---exactly the same------so if I wasn't on foreign plates I would have had to buy 2 (my spare is a 99% BFG !!!!!) RE: Daily/Weekly Costs of RV Travel in Europe?

Hi I did have a glance at this thread when it was active but was VERY restricted with internet and time. We believe the most practical/cost efective way to tour Europe would be in a Euro-style motorhome around 18/20 ft---for two people. A young couple we met in Alaska wanted to tour Europe for around 3 months--we suggested they buy a m.home, they did, and had a really good cheap trip and sold when they went back to Australia--for more than they paid---so it can be done. It does depend on what and where you intend to visit----even a 'small' m/home can be a problem in the city centre !!!! or as we are finding in Portugal, the small villages in the mountains !! 8ft wide is great on the main roads, but narrower would be better. when we were 'doing' city centre sight-seeing we would park in a nearby CG and go into the city by train/bus. If you want to go down the hire car route, try some of the companys around Lakenheath/Mildenhall (air base) they do long term hire and some will rent L/H/D cars---most don't have limited mileage. RE: Europe Travel Guide

If you cannot drink hot tea with a little milk in it, then stay away from the UK! AN EX. BRIT. OR ask for BLACK tea------thats what we drink Nigel--------Spain

RE: Rear doors - why have windows? pass through-why?

Hi long nights in AK still----soon be summer!!!!!!!! I see what your are saying----a massive amount of heat is lost through the roof vents---but----if you don't have them open a little, condensation will be worse---seems a bit pointless having them insulated, and open ?????, but the roof vent would be drier inside? The door window should be double glazed ? that would be the answer to that cold loss. the pass-through window allows to use the truck interior mirror to view behind when driving-------can't see the need to open though---I'm too fat (and old) to get through it LOL Nigel------Spain

RE: Camper to Truck Battery Disconnect Switch

I put a switch near the sink on our TC to truck connection-----that way it is easy to borrow a little power from the truck's batteries when required Nigel & Pamala----Spain

RE: What would do you tell an Aussie tourist to come and see?

Hi What a difficult question to try to help with !!!!! IF we were going to Australia we would head for Cape York (depending on the season) but you might suggest we go to Sydney !!!!----NOT for us. What can you hope to see in 2 weeks ?????-----that time of the year we would do Grand Canyon and San Francisco----but you are not with OH??? she will HAVE to see these two places--so you will have to go back to them. I think, visit your friend---spend quality time there-----and share your main trip, you will enjoy it so much more. But work out what you BOTH want to see and plan around that-----things like rodeo you have in Aus. but we don't, so that was an important thing on our trip. AS others have said, pick an area and spend time there, on our recent road trip we did 17.500 miles over 3 1/2 months---yes we did see a hell of a lot of that great Country (and Some of Canada) but we spent A LOT of time driving !!!! I assume your main trip will be in a rental RV ????? as you asked on an RV forum We wish you all the best wherever you decide to go Nigel & Pamala-------Spain (at the moment)

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Today we are parked-up in a very plesent carpark next to River Arade in Portugal after spending the morning wandering around a very nice market/town in the sun---- Yesterday-------- I fixed a piece of board to the floor of the over-head area with coach bolts to pull the ally sheeting back up----it was doing a good job of destroying the cab roof as it was sagging down--------looks good today Nigel & Pamala

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Today I just did a little light cleaning--------nothing tooooo hard in the Portugese sun!!!! I have been THINKING of fixing a small (fresh water) leak on the WC-------maybe tomorrow-----if I can get away from my chair in the sun ???????? Nigel & Pamala

RE: How long do TCs last, anyway?

Hi an ally frame is a big help IMHO----- I have just had to repair a seam on the overhead due to rotten frame----after a leak I did not know I had !!!!!(1997) We sold the TC with the ally frame and kept the older wood one-----maybe a bad move ????? Nigel & Pamala----------Portugal

RE: advised not to use a solar panel?

we don't have solar panels--so I can only give my opinion-------if you can justify the cost and weight of panel and extra batteries, they are worth having---------we are camped in an area with about 70 other 'campers' and I reckon more than 50% have solar--that must tell you somthing? We are on max legal weight with one battery, so we can't carry more to store unused power. The most versatile source of power IMHO is a SMALL genny-----we can have battery power whenever we need it, for the cost of a baby Honda and very little fuel-------this works for us. (We don't only camp when the sun shines) Nigel & Pamala-------Portugal

RE: Paralleling (inverter type) generators

Hi msiminoff thanks for that---------it was our intention to have a 1 and 2Kw gennys----this would give us a VERY usefull range of power for min. fuel cost. Nigel & Pamala--------Portugal

RE: Horizontal propane tanks

Why does one need replacing ????? We changed both the bottles in the TC we brought back to UK as the old ones did not have OPD fitted----and needed re-testing-------We were knocked over with the price---tried from Montana--IL--to TX Nigel & Pamala----Mildenhall-----UK

RE: I Have a 5th Wheel, but looking to buy Truck Camper

Hi we have a 5er and TC-----at the moment we are getting ready for 5 months away with the t/camper-----the 5er (obviously) has more room AND much more storage space---travelling with a tc you have to carry ONLY the essentials, ours is on a dually (Cummins Dodge) and is overweight BEFORE we have loaded it for our trip, so weight (to be legal) is a MAJOR consideration------BUT the advantage of having a smaller rig is incredible------Last year we went to Alaska with our TC but had little more 'stuff'than we carried in our suit-cases so were much lighter-------GREAT GREAT trip, we enjoyed every minute of it. This Summer we have been travelling a lot with the 5er and missed travelling with the TC !!!-----------------------------so-----if you can travel light and learn to cope in a smaller space ---GO FOR IT-------we find in forest type areas the height is the biggest limiting factor. We can't even get under a lot of gas-station canopys.--------We would not use the TC with more than two people for more than an odd night away (we have taken our grandson for a weekend)--------For a road trip with more people I would go for a SMALL t/trailer behind the TC Get your truck camper ----you will enjoy the freedom it gives you compared to a 5er----but remember the weight/space issues----I strongly suggest a dually 8ft bed Nigel & Pamala------Mildenhall ------UK

RE: Camper damage repair

Hi just a bit curious how you damaged it ???-------I wouldn't use diamond -------I would use smooth ally and get it folded as big as possible, something like 2ft X 12'' X 12'' Or if you can, the full length of the side ???? about 2mm thick (sorry to mix metric and imp. !!!)--------diamond plate looks good and is tough, but it has a tendancy to catch if you dont allow plenty of clearance when putting camper on and off---IMHO-----I would screw and bond with Dicor or Sikaflex Nigel & Pamala----Mildenhall

You French guys will remind us of the name of the town that NO-ONE should fail to visit--------still left exactly how it was left during WW11-------We have it on our list of essential things to do-------A very sombre reminder of the effect of war !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
