RE: Interesting

Good to see the Shar Pei included as one of the breeds that has been twisted to suit human fancy.
Our rescued boy is a traditional bonemouth Shar Pei. I had no idea that this was what he was when I adopted him. He's practically a twin to the example shown in the youtube video.
I just assumed Shar Pei were the pudgy wrinkly dogs that are promoted, yet the traditional bonemouth is very, VERY different. Even in temperament and energy level.
Many folks assume he's a pit bull because he's muscular and taut. Not so ... he's a lovely Shar Pei!

RE: camper fire

Very, very sorry about your cats. And sorry for you and your RV. Very sad.
You say nothing was on but I wonder if the fridge was on? Your fifth wheel was a 2005?
There was an issue with Dometic fridges of that vintage that could potentially cause a fire. More info here on RV.Net at http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/18592867.cfm

RE: Moose and Bear in British Columbia on the Alaska Hwy

Northern B.C. is very active with wildlife. Keep the eyes peeled for caribou too, plus more bears.
Around the Liard River & Hotsprings and northward to Watson Lake, you'll likely encounter some of these ... hopefully napping in the sun and not standing on the road refusing to move!

RE: The Silver Trail to Keno City, Yukon

Yes, we drove through Elsa to access Keno. It was near shut-down when we went by and signs were up indicating no public access.
Then we took the backroad from Keno (Duncan Creek Main?) back to Five Mile Lake. That was an adventure. Slow go, for sure!

RE: The Silver Trail to Keno City, Yukon

Keno is an interesting spot. The museum is intriguing and well-worth a visit.
http://suethomas.ca/images/SilverTrail/20080628_KenoMuseumInterior1.jpg width=640
The signpost at the top of Keno Hill is also interesting.
http://suethomas.ca/images/SilverTrail/20080628_KenoHill.jpg width=640
The road up is not recommended for RVs by any means, but a nice backroad trip with the truck. Don't think we got into 4x4 at any time.
At the top near the signpost there was a cabin that had me pondering WHY anyone would build a home THERE, even for mining ...

Five Mile Lake Yukon Gov't campground is a nice overnight spot too. There's a good hiking trail around the lake.
Our day trip from Mayo to Keno and back to Mayo is described at http://suethomas.ca/20080628_Keno.html

RE: BC Campground photos?

Many are shown right here on RV.net at http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/21257822.cfm
BC Parks also features many of the provincial park campgrounds on their site at http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/index.html

RE: BC Campground maps and school schedule

BC Parks for the provincial park campgrounds
http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/index.html
This gov't agency also products folded maps for each region of the province that shows locations and describes the campgrounds. These are available at most information centres and provincial campgrounds.
Recreation Sites in B.C. here
http://www.sitesandtrailsbc.ca/
This site features an interactive map that shows locations and describes the forestry sites. I've not seen a hardcopy of this map. Closest thing would be the Backroads Maps series, which are booklets
http://www.backroadmapbooks.com/main/index.html
There was also a Forest Lands map from decades ago, but it is no longer produced by the provincial government. The Backroads Mapsbooks are more up-to-date and recent than the old Forest Lands maps.

RE: AAA or GS for Alcan Travel

BCAA (affiliated with AAA) in British Columbia covers both B.C. and Yukon. Their service is very good, speaking from experience.
I believe you will need 'RV Plus' coverage to cover the camper with the truck. Maybe double check that though. It's not an expensive upgrade.

RE: Alcan Highway report.

This Alaska map with FAA webcam locations is a good resource
http://avcams.faa.gov/gmap.php
No webcam at the border crossing on Top of the World (no airport there). There is a webcam at Eagle, Northway and Tok though.
The Alaska Road Weather System also has webcams.

RE: Alcan Highway report.

Gosh, I commute to work on the Alaska Highway's 30 miles north west of Whitehorse. It isn't all that bad. There are two hurly-whirly spots that will toss things a bit, but other than that I whip along at 70 mph or more in my car.
Those spots are well-marked and both are in areas where the ground is sinking so you go down a hill and then up a hill with the cookie-tosser dips being near the bottoms of the hills.
As for snow on Top of the World ... I learned that info from a Dawson City resident. They hoped to have it plowed this weekend.

RE: AAA Road Service in AK?

In B.C. with BCAA RV Plus, the trailer is towed too. It is one of their selling features; they keep reminding us of that when it is time to renew!
Before we had RV coverage, we were towing a utility trailer that broke down (wheel bearings). When I phoned BCAA, they added RV coverage to my existing membership and sent a tow truck for the trailer.

RE: Traveling w/ a pet, check this out

Owners of pit bull-type dogs deal with a strong breed stigma ...
Eighteen months ago I rescued a traditional Shar-Pei who was about two years old. Traditional Shar-Pei are muscular, high-energy, short-coated (Shar-Pei horsecoat) canines; their body type is similar to a pit bull. Their skull is very different though, and they have little ears that lay flat similar to the present-day Shar Pei that many people are more familiar with. Kodi is about 45 lbs.
Kodi was in terrible condition when I adopted him. The shelter speculated he had done time as a bait dog (dog fighting term). His physical scars are extensive. His emotional scars, more so. His distrust of humans was huge. His dislike of other dogs apparent.
I ask people if Kodi can approach them when we meet. It is not uncommon to get a negative answer. One woman answered, "I don't like those types of dogs". I replied, "You don't like Shar Pei?". She stopped and asked for more info. Five minutes later she was petting Kodi and enjoying his affection. Sometimes Kodi lets me know he doesn't want to meet a human though, not sure what he detects in those people but he doesn't want to be near them.
When we meet a stable dog, I let the owner know my dog was not socialized and ask if Kodi can be with me nearby. This eventually progressed to Kodi meeting dogs, playing with dogs, and liking other dogs. But it took a lot of very stable, calm, confident dogs to adjust Kodi's attitude.
It is a LOT of work to rehabilitate a dog. It is a 24/7 job.
Not so much work to ruin a dog.

RE: Arrrrrrrrrrrrg! Part II

Diann ... be thankful this is all happening THERE rather than UP there. Your rig is doing you a favor by highlighting these issues now rather than while you're in Yukon or Alaska!
This is lucky indeed, not so bad when you see it from a different perspective!

RE: Shortest 5th wheel or 5th wheel toy hauler

We owned a 17.5' fifth wheel made by Fleetwood. Handiest little thing ... it had the same floorplan as their 11' Elkhorn camper. Did a lot of backroads and gravel with that fifth wheel!
They no longer manufacture this size though ...

AAA service in B.C. is excellent ... never had an issue while we lived there. Now in Yukon, it is fine for road service but not much else. Don't know what else to suggest though ...

RE: help with fleas please

If the infestation is serious, it is important to do something. Too many fleas can negatively impact the health of the kittens at that age.
If they're docile enough a flea comb might be a good temp solution. They're small enough it shouldn't take too much time to reduce to population by running the comb through. Have a dish of soapy water next to you to dump the fleas into though.
Wonder if Mama cat will take to being combed too? Our adult semi-feral cat didn't mind being combed, even though she had long fur.

Dawson City - George Black ferry is in the Yukon River!

The ferry is crossing the Yukon River at Dawson City as of today!
Mind you, the Top of the World Hwy still has snow on it ... 5-6 feet in places. I understand they hope to have that plowed by next weekend, the May long weekend in Canada.
The ferry in September 2010:
