RE: Nothing has changed at Tenacatita!!

Lew, we feel the same about buying in the US or Mexico. The only time I would buy any land in Mexico is if I won the lottery, I would buy one of the places in the middle of the Flamingos Golf Course in Nuevo Vallarta.

RE: Feliz Cinco de Mayo

This was on the JaltembaJalapeno forum today. I have no idea whether it's factual or not, there are no links or quotes to any sources. BTW, I believe it is celebrated in Puebla.

Let this be a lesson to you Canuck drug dealers, come to the US to buy your drugs where it is safe, not to dangerous Mexico. (There isn't a smiley with tongue in cheek.;))

RE: Plans, Winter 2012

We left the 5er in storage in La Penita. We plan on leaving Fallon mid October and taking our time going down, to arrive at the La Penita RV park on 1 Nov. to get it set up. We plan on going to Guadalahara on the 22nd of Dec, after the world ending celebration we are planning in the park on the 21st, and spending Christmas in Guad. We also want to go spend a week in Patzquaro and maybe a trip down to Oaxaca. We don't plan on coming back north until after Easter. If anyone wants to rent our rig in the park for a week or two during our trips, let us know and we can firm up some dates later.

RE: Mexican Officials Hail Progress On US Travel Warnings

This is a cut and paste from facebook in which mw wife replied to one of her friends that had visited Mexico a few times in the past and who we met in La Penita in 2005. Her friend had indicated that they were not comfortable traveling in Mexico anymore because of all the travel alerts.
"Xxxxx, it's not unsafe to travel in Mexico if you don't buy or sell drugs, stay away from the brothels and don't go to the local cantina. I know none of us do any of those things. Now, with that being said, there's never been a killing of an RVer in Mexico. Two that I know of have had their rigs taken under pretty frightening circumstances but they were unharmed. We've traveled the highways, byways, dirt paths and roads in Mexico and never felt that we weren't safe. The same goes for our hundreds of fellow RVers in La Penita. The safety rules are the same in Mexico as the U.S.A. Take safety precautions, don't stop in the border towns unless it's Algadones, don't do any of the illegal things I mentioned above and above all else obey the laws and have respect when you're in another country. Much of the hype is coming from our own government for whatever reasons. Right before we left to spend 6 months in Mexico, 3 people were murdered in Carson City by a gunman who walked into a restaurant and shot them. I've eaten in that restaurant but that doesn't mean I won't go to Carson City or eat in that restaurant ever again. Don't let the hype keep you from Mexico. I didn't mean to hijack your post but I feel very strongly about some of the misconceptions about Mexico because of the news media, the government, etc. If we thought for a minute that we weren't safe, we wouldn't go and neither would the other several million visiters from the U.S.A and Canada. I'd love for you two to visit again, so much beauty to share. Think of all the ideas for paintings. I know you have a bus load of pics already but there's always something new."

RE: The Minority

Look at the La Penita RV Park web site, they run a caravan every Oct to arrive in the park on Nov 1. The caravans, in our experience of 4 years, are just waved through the checkpoints.
We left our trailer in storage down there this spring and drove back in our 06 Dodge Quad cab and were searched north of Los Mochis at an Army check point. While it was not a thourogh search it was more than a quick glance. We were also Xrayed at Benjamin Hill along with a group of vehicles including both Mexican and gringo vehicles.
Travel on the mainland will require you to have a TIP (Temporary Import Permit) hologram on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, or your Motorhome and towed. You will also need a FMM which is like a Visa. I won't describe more details here, if you decide to go next fall you can find more details at www.ontheroadin.com.

RE: TIP refund

As of sometime in June of this year (2012) Mexico requires a deposit of $400, $300, or $200, depending upon the year of your pickup or car, and maybe some other vehicles. The deposit is in US $ and may be paid in cash or credit card. There was great knashing of teeth and much sweating going on on this and other forums about whether the deposit would be returned in a timly manner. The deposit is NOT required on RVs. The deposit is in addition to the fee for the TIP.

RE: Hijacking (Shooting) on Toll Road Near Minatitlan

We just left Monday and drove from La Penita de Jaltemba, up MX 15 and MX 2 to Lukeville and crossed yesterday afternoon. As to there not being highway police under the next overpass, We saw more Federal Police units, Army units and other Mexican police units along MX 15 than I have ever seen along any similar 1000 mile stretch of I80, I90, I15, I95, I10, I40 or I5. BTW, we were stopped for about an hour north of Las Mochis, where we were searched by the Army, and 15 - 20 min at Benjamin Hill where we were Xrayed. We left our 5er in storage in La Penita ans drove our truck back.

RE: 8 Cents p/gal ? Central and South American Fuel Prices

Since the price of gas started its rise back in the 1970's during the "oil embargo" I've always said that the only thing worse than the government NOT controlling the price of fuel would be the government CONTROLLING it.

RE: sigh, how many more times

If you don't choose to travel in Mexico, for whatever reason, that's just fine with me. BUT, why do you even look on this forum and feel the need to post about why you won't travel there??? I will NEVER travel to Alaska either by road or boat (again), but I don't go on the Alaska forum and post why I dislike it and that I would never travel there. I don't go on the Motor Home forum and post about how much better I think a 5th wheel is. I don't feel the need to tell everyone that they are stupid to overload their rig. Enough said from me!!!

RE: Pemex Employees Pay to Work

I believe that a couple of years ago, several of the regulars on this form were saying that Pemex workers were very well paid, and to tip them was not necessary. I'm not going to go to the trouble to look those posts up however. I usually tip 5 or 10 pesos, as I usually only get 50 liters of diesel at a time as I prefer to keep the top half full.

RE: Flying home leaving vehicle can be an issue

My guess, and it is ONLY a GUESS, is that when you got your TIP, you got, and paid for, both FMMs at the same time, all
on the same bill, so a vehicle would show up linked to both FMMs.

There are 4 RV parks at Celistino Gaska, 75 Kliks north of Mazatlan. That's where many from La Penita stay on the way north.

RE: WHEREN AND HOW MANY..

We know of at least 5 other couples that don't come to Mexico anymore, not from fear, but for just the reasons that moisheh just put forward. We like to golf, and most of the courses that are around Yuma are as nice as the ones here in the PV area, and they are $40 US v/s $135+ US for a round. The local par 3 in El Monteon is charging 275 pesos for a round, and, while it is much improved from 2005, it doesn't even come close to par 3s NOB. Some also play pickleball and tennis, and I haven't seen anything like that in Mexico. That said, we will continue to come here, and hope to travel further south next season, as we really like the warm weather.
