RE: Recommendations for portable generator

I live full time in a small 6X10 utility trailer (see my avatar below) and have been parked in my company parking lot for the past two years. I am totally on my own power as in I only use a 2000 Honda gen. I can use at the same time a hot plate, toaster and the fridge (which is always on). I usually shut the gen off when I go to work but upon returning I turn it back on. I paid $900.00 I truly am testing the extent of the generator. I don't really change the oil unless it shuts off automatically due to oil calling to be changed. And by now when it does shut off is when I am confident that it did because it knows when it is time to do so. I just change it and it starts right up. It is truly dependable.

RE: backing up trailer

I think getting the trailer to the site is not as much fun as when I am actually backing into the sot I am going to be at. A few challenges excite me and this is one of them.

Flight 93 Movie!

Just saw the movie Flight 93. Was hoping it would have been different. Thought it was intense. Had to come back to the fact that it happened the way it did. I went through the death of the Kennedy's, Reagan being shot. Many other stupid things. Going to go to the Flight 93 memorial when it opens. Every time I go its somber and everyone is so quiet. Remember 2001!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Feel like crying.

RE: Getting Old

When I read these type of threads, I think of my loss when my wife died four years ago at age 48. I think about what people write and say boy mine is not as bad as others who have lost some great friends and family even younger and I want to say that should give me a lift but I just can't get past it. (Tears running down my cheek as of this minute.) I should be happy I am 58 in December but it just doesn't do anything for me. I sure hope God explains to me why he kept me here and has her now. It is strange to be in crowds but still feel all alone.

RE: Propane use

I lived in my 6x10 un insulated trailer for over a year. UN INSULATED! and installed a 19,000 Atwood furnace.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Region.
I use one 20lb tank in three days in the dead of winter. I get the second re filled every three days for $15.00 per tank.
My idea this year is to get the trailer insulated and the hope is that the money I spend on the insulation will save on the fuel not used during the winter in less tanks. I hope to at least get a extra day per tank.
So in a week I am using two tanks for sure and already starting day seven on the third tank. Maybe I will get that extra seventh day into just the two tanks. That will add up in the cost of the insulation for the five months of winter.
I only fill up at the U-Haul fill station.

RE: Finding Propane for a fair price

I patronize U-Haul in the winter as they stay constant. I live just a block from a Butler fill station but he was charging $20.00 U-Haul $15.00. Got to be friends with him. See's me every week.Knows I will be back int the late fall. I have to get to know his name.

RE: Helping others VS Beggars

I was on my way to the State Archives in Harrisburg, Pa last week and saw a man under a scanty type blanket laying on a park bench trying to get some sleep using the cement bench rail as a pillow. He reluctantly came out of his blanket as I was getting his attention but was glad when I handed him a five. Felt good the rest of the day. I knew he was not a scammer as he was old bearded and I just knew he had no job.

RE: What do you do when you camp?

Well living in my trailer and I have a hobby, I always combine them and usually camp on private property where I usually show the property owner that they were to have a railroad built in their back yards or front and we get to talk and usually they let me camp away from their home but on there lots. I give them a complimentary copy of my work which of course includes back ground history of their property that they knew nothing about and in return they let me camp. Trust me if my work on my hobby wasn't good they would not let me camp. Usually it is on big acreage sites. Over the 4th I got three nights on this one piece of property. I don't do fires so when I leave there is no sign I was ever there.

RE: Bizarre Campground Behavior

Due to my hobby I was given permission to camp on the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike east of Breezewood, Pa. I once drove up a long access road that gets me to a gate that lets me into the old Cove Plaza, a service plaza once used for the turnpike. I get to the gate just to find a Jeep parked at the gate. I had to back out all the way and it was not fun. Next time I will block them in and call the rangers to get them out with a fine. In short I was given as payment the use of the site as camping. They used my research w/o asking me to get grant money to do improvements. They said I was very reasonable asking for camping privileges instead of suing. They profited from my work without asking me so compensation was agreed upon in this manner.
I can just see the next time how he has to call the rangers to get me out and at the same time explain to the ranger how he parked in front of a yellow gate where it is clearly posted no parking.

I'm given free camping!

I do the history of the Pennsylvania Turnpike which purchased the abandoned South Pennsylvania Railroad through Pennsylvania in the 1880's and Cowan's Gap SP rangers asked me to do a power point program on the abandoned and suggested alignment through their park to entertain the campers. They never knew that the alignment did a survey up their site as a possible alternative to building the Tuscarora Tunnel now used by the turnpike.
I will be doing this twice this summer. In return for two night stays each. Maybe I should be asking for money. NAHHHH! I have to much fun with this.
The first will be July 8th.
