RE: New to RV-ing, looking for advice on 1/2-ton TH

Not sure if you're serious or kidding with this little thing, Sorry a.dog it was a little of both, no disrespect intended. Just a statement as to how far companies will go to label a toy hauler 1/2 ton towable. Actually the 23' Eclipse looked like you could make it work...by the numbers. The big point most of us are trying to make is that toy haulers are just plain heavy. None of them will sit at their stated dry weight. Mine for example has a claimed dry weight of #7395 and a claimed tongue weight of #1090. That's a joke. My tongue weight is consistently closer to #1600 and axle weight is between #9500-10,000. Mind you, I travel with no toys and minimal water. If you could find a dealer that would let you do a test tow, try it. See if you are comfortable, and if your truck is up to the task, of towing at/or near your max weight. If so, go for it, if not, you're not out any money. Good luck in your search.

RE: Towing a Jayco Popup 1206 1600lb with a Kia Sorento

masonburdette I think you have started to realize your trailer weight will exceed your tow vehicle's rated capacity. You mention the dealer said it would work. Which dealer, the rv dealer or the KIA dealer? Maybe they would consider an exchange or trade, if the deal is fresh. As for the brakes, you will not be able to simply install a brake controller and be able to actuate the surge brakes. My first RV was a popup that I towed with an xtra cab Toyota Tacoma 4 cylinder. Most of the time it did okay, but I do remember one time coming home over the Siskiyou summit and wondering if I would make it over. Had to downshift to 2nd gear and then creep at 35 mph. I do not think the truck would have liked that for many more trips. Ended up moving to a full sized truck, and began the perpetual cycle of; bigger truck-bigger RV. You can make your setup work, just load very light, and expect to slow down over the steeper grades. Slow down at the crest of a summit, downshift and let the engine and transmission help you down. Don't push it and you'll be fine.

RE: Sell or trade in

Tazymae, Your truck will be a very limiting factor. While I know there are truck campers made that claim to be half-ton (1500) friendly, you will very limited. A 1/2 ton truck just does not have the cargo capacity to carry the weight of a camper. I am definitely not a 'weight-police' kind of guy, but I would be very mindful of the weight of the camper (camper/truck combo). Good luck on your search.

RE: ?? on Replacement tires for 06 Ford F350 4x Crew Diesel....

BF Goodrich All Terrain LT270/75/R18. Long lasting, nice all around tire. I am on my second set with absolutely no issues. I have 98,000 miles on my truck and had replaced the continentals at about 5,000 miles with my first set of BFG's.

RE: Use your ramp as a deck?

I went with the jack-stands along with rubber toppers to prevent any scratching. I also purchased some light duty deer fencing and plastic posts that I can put up around the ramp. The post just push into the ground, then it takes me 5 minutes to mount the fencing to it. This would not work if you were on a concrete pad, but I have never been to a spot (yet)that I couldn't back up far enough to get the ramp portion over soft soil. The end result is my ramp becomes a fenced-in patio that keeps our two Great Danes in. It is nice because we can put their pillow-beds on that while we hang out in camp, no need to tie them up or keep them leashed.

RE: Looking to buy toy hauler

You may also want to look at the Keystone Raptor 30FS or the Heartland Torque TQ261 or TQ271

RE: This one is sweet...

Very, very nice...I would just be a little cautious regarding the 10K dry weight with 3 slides. Sounds a little light. But if so that would be nice:)

RE: Any one have experience with Hercules tires?

I have the gladiator version on my trailer and have no complaints. They seem to be wearing very well and there is no sign of cracking or drying out on the sidewall. I also got mine at Les Schwab when I bought the trailer, it was part of the deal so I am not sure what the dealer paid. I will be going on my second summer of use this year so we'll see how they do. I have the same exact size you state and I believe the weight rating is #2830 per tire.

You're right it's a nanny-state. You're probably better off not visiting...too many nanny rules.

RE: No power from Generator

On my Onan you just have to remove the front cover and the circuit breakers are right there.

RE: Power Wagon & Toy Hauler Tongue Weight Question

A toy hauler trailer with an advertised dry hitch weight of 930 lbs can easily exceed 1200 lbs loaded... I would change out the factory hitch for an aftermarket class V hitch with closer to 1500 lb tongue weight rating This is pretty sound advice. From experience I have seen my trailer's advertised weight of #1090 jump to #1600 on occasions. You will start to figure out ways to distribute weight to balance that, but it is good to be prepared. I went to a Curt XD that I got at a very reasonable price from etrailer.

RE: Largest Production Pull Trailer Toyhauler??

It looks like Forest River and Keystone are making the longest non custom tow-behinds right now. Sandstorm Raptor My 3200 has a 32' box with another 4' or so for the tongue.

RE: Little RZR water fun.... :)

A riparian zone or riparian area is the interface between land and a river or stream. This is why they have designated this one crossing, as it's the only area where you can enter/exit the riparian area. javascript:; Exactly. Twice I see your buddy drive upstream and exit the creek, thus destroying riparian vegetation. He did not use it as a crossing, he used it as his play area:M. And I could care less about disturbing macroinvertebrates(crawdads and water bugs). Wow really...don't even need to comment on that:E. the fish are non-existant in this section of the river. ...And I suppose it will stay that way as long as you continue riding your razor up and down the creek:S. Mav, if you can show this video to any state or federal land-use biologist, watershed specialist, state or federal fish and wildlife biologists, Native American representative, or even your local responsible off-road group and have them say it is okay then I will be the first to say go for it...I don't think that will happen.

RE: Little RZR water fun.... :)

Mav, Crossing is one thing. To tear up and down like your friend did is another. I am not sure how you can say that he did not affect the riparian vegetation or any of the macro-invertebrates that inhabit that creek bed. It is all part of an ecosystem. Not a card carrying member of the Sierra Club...just saying.

RE: Going on a LONG trip. Tips on what to bring?

I hate to be a Negative-Nelly but be prepared once you hit California to experience some cruddy road conditions. Every road is going have bad spots but what I experienced on the CA. I-5 was terrible. There are chuck-holes and cracks large enough to see rebar...not good. To be fair however there is a section around Redding? that it is new but that is it. So above all what "rjv57chevy" said is probably the best advice you could get.

RE: Our New Toy House

Then why the winch? I just can't see turning my perfectly good 4X4 into a boulevard cruiser. You might as well just buy a 2WD if you are going to do that. I don't know, to each his own I guess. I just shake my head everytime I see a 4x4 truck running down the road with these. $70K for a Dodge?? LOL... Jeez...all he did was post to show off his new rv not have his tow vehicle ripped apart by you:R. I can't imagine you would walk up to somebody in person and be that insulting...why here?

RE: What tires are you running

I've got a Les Schwab ST tire called the Gladiator. They are a 15" E rated tire with capacity of #2830 @ 80 PSI. I installed them last summer when I bought the trailer. The dates on the tires are as follows 2= 46/09 4= 15/10 2= 23/10 so they should be strong till Nov. 2012 or so. I have put about 2500 miles on them with no problems. In fact about 800 of those miles were on CA. freeway (I-5, I-80) which in my opinion is the worst condition roads I have ever been on.

RE: 2003 Layton Rampage 217

Congrats on the new trailer. My experience with Skyline (Nomad) was positive. It wasn't fancy but it was reliable and functional. I think your truck should be fine. The GVWR on the 217 is only #9000 so depending on how you load up, your tongue weight should be in the #900-1400 range.
