RE: Help!!!

Side lights are also hooked to your taillights. So theoretically you can go camping as long as you can be sure you will only drive during daylight hours. Personally I would spray some WD-40 into the socket on the truck end and then plug, wiggle, and unplug the cord multiple times. I've had to do this many times over the years at the beginning of the season to get all my lights working. I have an '08 F250 and occasionally have the same issue when pulling a flatbed carhauler...even get a trailer disconnect signal. The problem is solved by spraying a little WD40 on the connections AND on the hitch and coupler. I know some will say that attracts dirt and shorthens the life of the hitch but it solves the lights problem...at least it works on my truck.

RE: what if?

If gas went to $7 or $8 a gallon think about diesel price per gallon. Then think about the cost to transport commercial goods, groceries etc. I'm not sure camping would be the thing I would be worrying about. I have seen hay go from $60 a ton to over $150 a ton mainly because of fuel costs. You can hardly give a horse away in Wyoming. I agree with this...if gas/fuel suddenly jumps to $7-8/gal we as a nation will have a lot worse things to contend with other than camping...like buying food, clothes, etc. No reason for it to happen or even be as high as it is...politics and greenies are the direct cause. Trying to shove 60 mpg cars and -0- emissions down our throats without a clear plan how to achieve it.

RE: Is there such a thing

Our Eagle came with an air mattress with a built in pump for the sofa. I have used it to accomodate my mother on several occasions and it seems to hold air and be very comfortable. If something does go wrong with it I think we will just get a good quality air mattress from WM and use it as long as it works. Don't want something too comfortable...guests may overstay their welcome. ;-)

RE: Where are you workkamping this summer?

I will be hosting at three different Virginia State Parks for the months of June, July, and August.

RE: Gulfstream Amerilite 23BW

I have been in the one with the big rear window and it seemed like it had a lot of space. I owned a 27BH for four years, spent over 300 nights in it, and pulled it 15k miles. It was a great TT, only reason we traded was we no longer needed bunks and wanted more floor space. The Amerilite did a good job for us, was pretty inexpensive to buy and maintain, and we got a good price for it on trade-in.

RE: having slide deployed

When you go to the dealers lot and look at TT they almost all have the slides out and no stabilizer jacks down. If it did any harm your TT would have been "harmed" long before you got it.

RE: Slow market or what?

Tough market all around. The gentleman across the street from me passed away in February, '11...his widow has been trying to sell their DP ever since and finally moved it yesterday. It was a very nice unit, in immaculate shape, very reasonable miles, 11 years old, but she had a heck of a time getting rid of it and I don't know what she got for it but I think the new buyer got a very good deal. Money can also be hard to get. We are debt free and have great credit scores but when I mentioned to our banker about maybe getting an RV loan she immediately changed the subject and started talking about home equity loans...even they are harder to get than five years ago.

RE: Jellystone Campgrounds

We have two fairly near us...one in Luray and one in Natural Bridge, VA. Both are nice CGs and the GC love them...lots of activities, etc, but with very high site fees plus the activity fees it's easy to spend $200+ for two nights. We go occasionally for the GC but not often at that price level.

RE: Question About Slide Toppers

We have them on our TT. The shorter one over the bedroom slide works as I had anticipated but the long one over the sofa and dinette slide flaps in the wind and collects water. Next time I am near the dealer I plan to stop in and complain but I doubt much will get done.

RE: Poll: do you own a TT and a Pop Up.?

I have a TV with a eight foot bed and a cap. I am in the planning stage of building a removable bunk with mattress to go in the back of the truck. I have several tents I could use for storing stuff and changing clothes, and could use the camp stove and an ice chest for food. Figured it would work for quick trips, go places I can't haul a 36' TT, or be good for some stealth camping on a long trip. Cheaper and easier to manage than a PUP, particularly if its just one person.

RE: how big is too big???

Our Jayco Eagle is 36'4" hitch to bumper. Obviously there are some campsites and even some CGs I can't get into...however, is the glass half full or half empty...there hundreds that I can get into. I half time (160-180 nights a year) and much prefer a TT over any other configuration. I use the truck bed for "stuff" and I use the truck for a number of things other than pulling the TT. We have a good hitch and don't pull overweight (except for the driver) so the rig is comfortable to drive. I respect those who use other set ups but we use what works best for us.

RE: Towing a streamlined trailer

Various trailer manufacturers would tout their "aerodynamic noses" as saving 10% ar even a more ridculous number (20%) on fuel...when push came to shove, none of them had done any scientific studies to substantiate the claims...so you won't see such bragging anymore. The long haul trucks you see on our highways with all of the state of the art aerodynamic farings, no more idling when parked, roof caps, with all of these ehancements, including trailer side air foils can save between 7 and 12 percent per recent Department of Energy studies. That's a lot of savings for a trucking company! The "Eco-Geeks" over at the Toyota Prius Forum even were discussing a good coat of wax may give better mileage...promply disproved! But you and your RV can save more fuel just with proper tire inflation, using a lite right foot, and keeping the speeds down. I agree, the aerodynamic claims are way overblown. I owned a company that had class 8 trucks and we tried all kinds of things to get an extra 0.1 mpg. When you are towing a big ole block like a TT down the road, air drag is a big mpg factor. I get 7.5-8 pulling a 10k TT but pulling a flatbed with a farm tractor at 10k and I can get over 10 mpg...less drag.

RE: cargo capacity of TT

Axles have a weight rating...2500#, 3500#, 5500#, etc. The size of the axle used and the strength of the frame go into determining the gross weight of the TT. If the manufacturer is using heavier duty axles then they can show a higher CCC. Frankly, I don't know where I could find enough stuff to fill up 4000#. However, our Jayco only has about 2000# CCC dry...add 90 gallons of fresh water and you just used up about 750# of the CCC...therefore I rarely carry much water.

RE: Extend A Shower install

I installed one on our previous TT...one screw in the stud and the other just in the wall. It was pretty solid and a very good mod...gave much more shoulder room in the shower.

RE: When are you ready to go home?

I have been out since Feb 5th except for about a week at the first of March because a BIL passed away. I am going to the stix and brix for most of May to catch up on some yard work, some business matters and to ride my new motorcycle. Then I will be on the road again camphosting in June, July, and August. Might get back to the S&B a time or two in June but after that probably not until mid-September. I half time now and could easily FT but DW(after she retires) will never be able to leave the GC for any length of time. If it were just me I would sell the house, the rentals, and our farm and full time until I got too old to handle it.

RE: Lucky

Like the OP we started with nothing, worked very hard, got transfered around, struggled at times, but we feel very lucky. We aren't particularly smart or talented but we were in the right place at the right time many times, and coupled with the sacrifices and hard work it paid off. I actually tell people that we have been very lucky. There are many folks who worked just as hard, made even greater sacrifices and it didn't pay off as well as it did for us. Enjoy what you have and don't worry what others think.

RE: Reasonable charge to move camper

It depends on several things...how far...how difficult to get to, hook up...how difficult to site at the new location, etc. I would want a flat fee for a short haul and probably a per mile fee for a long distance haul. At any rate with gas/diesel costing around $0.50 per mile it isn't going to be cheap. JMHO

RE: State parks??

When I started camp hosting in VA state parks I asked one of the LEO Rangers about their policy on alcohol. His response..."act like an adult and get treated like one, act like an idiot and get treated like one." I think they have a good policy.

RE: 2012 Eagle 330 RLTS towing experiences

We have a 320RLDS Eagle that is 36'6" hitch to bumper, not including the slide out bike rack. My towing weight is about 10,100# which is very near the TT GVWR. It tows extremely well and is pretty easy to back in. I did have to forego a couple of workkamp jobs I wanted because we were too long to fit the site. BTW, we pull with an F250, long wheelbase, V10. The truck pulls quite well...just wish the MPG were a little better but we can't have everything.

RE: Campground near to Richmond Va?

The KOA/Americamps has been updated recently and is a good CG albeit close to the interstate with some road noise. There is also a place on Rt 1 near KOA called Kosmo Village...not much in the way of amenities but has full hookups...its also close to Rt 1 with some road noise. Never stayed at Kings Dominion so my first choice is KOA. We stay there several times a year while visiting our DD in Richmond. There is not much else until you get south of Richmond near Chester. Pocahantas State Park has some nice sites but none with sewer. Again, I would stay at KOA if I were working in Richmond.
