Route to Palo Duro Canyon

We're planning a trip to Palo Duro Canyon, Tx. We live a little SW of Fort Worth. My mapping software has planned a route that takes us on 287 out of Wichita Falls up to the town of Claude. From there it takes us due west on 1151, then south on what looks to be small country roads until we connect with the road leading into the park (217). We're towing a 38' 5th wheel & don't want to get into spots that may be too tight or take a lot of time to navigate. Has anyone traveled this route to the park entrance??
If road 1151 is decent, it looks like i could take it all the way over to Washington St. in south Amarillo (I-27?), then go south to rt. 217 and take a left to the park entrance. If anyone knows if rt. 1151 would work for me let me know.
Another alternate would be for me to take rt. 86 from 287 over to I-27 then go north to rt. 217 and take a right to the park entrance.
Any thoughts on the best way to get to the park is much appreciated.

RE: Figuring out payload capacity....

Where are you getting your wt. figures for the trailer? If these are those listed in the trailer brochure they're of limited value. Better #'s to go by are the GVWR of the trailer and use 20% of that for pin wt. There are a lot of variables when it comes to pin wt. but as an example, i tow a trailer with a GVWR of 13,800# and my pin wt. is 2800#. The actual wt. of the trailer when i last weighed it was about 11,000#.

RE: Aux. fuel tank - Honda 2000 Companion - need help

I've got a honda gen parallel setup that i put together. I don't have it with me on my current trip, but IIRC there are no hose extensions from the gas caps into the honda gas tanks. My setup uses marine quick disconnects on the honda gas caps and my 6 gallon marine tank cap. The honda caps don't need the extensions cause they are sucking gas from the marine tank so it dribbles into the honda gas tanks. Could be with these hose extensions there's enough back pressure from the gas level in the honda tank to prevent the gas from being drawn from your auxiliary tank. I also make sure both honda gas tanks are full when i connect everything up to reduce the volume that a vacuum has to be drawn within.
btw, welcome to the forums..

RE: slideouts not working!

someone mentioned checking the fuses so thought i'd add to that. The slide out motor (or pump motor) can have fuses close to it so look in that vicinity to see if those fuses are blown. As an example, my RV uses hydraulics to move the slides so i have a motor-driven hydraulic pump. Inside the front compartment of our RV, up towards the right where this pump motor is mounted are 2 fuses for it.

RE: Replacing a vent cap?

use a flexible putty knife (scraper) to remove the caulk from around the plastic base of the vent. This should expose the screws that are holding the vent fitting to the roof. Remove the screws and carefully remove the vent from the roof. After that, remove as much of the sealant around the vent hole in the roof as you can, but BE CAREFUL to not damage the roof membrane. It's not necessary to remove all the caulk. The caulk you should use to install the new vent fitting is Dicore 501 which is a self-leveling type of caulk designed to be used on horizontal surfaces. I would put a bead of caulk on the bottom of the flange of the new vent then put the new vent over the vent pipe and push it down onto the roof. Be sure to line up the holes in the vent flange with those in the roof. Install screws in holes & tighten down (careful here cause the vent fitting is only plastic). Now use your sealant (Dicor) to seal around the flange of the vent fitting and the roof. When i did one of these i put down about 3 rings of caulk around the vent fitting. The first was where the flange and roof meet then i did a ring around the inside of the first ring another ring around the inside of the first ring. You can always add more if you wish.

RE: Montana or Cedar Creek?

we've got a 2009 Cedar Creed 34SATS and have lived in it about half of the time since we bought. Overall, the trailer has been very dependable and trouble-free. As far as issues go, we had issues with wheel (aluminum) corrosion that FR fixed by shipped 4 new wheels. Unfortunately, the new ones are also corroding & we are past our warranty period. The entry steps had a bent frame & FR sent a new, improved model they had just started using. We had an issue with the tires (Ironman Electra) & we're able to resolve it directly with the tire manufacturer. We didn't have a blowout luckily, but saw signs of tread separation. The converter went south (after warranty) & we replaced it with an upgraded model.
So, not perfect, but like i said, overall it's been a good trailer. FR stood behind it during warranty work and our dealer was good at helping us any way they could.

RE: fifth wheel hitch installation

most hitch pins are in front of the center of the axle by 1-3" or so. There should be a template or measurement guide for your truck and hitch that shows you where to put the hitch in the bed of the truck to get the proper placement.

RE: Duo-therm A/C problem

A/C would buzz/try for 3 sec and shut down. Turned the control to fan. Fan would come on for 3 sec and shut down.
from this info it seems like the compressor is trying to start, but won't (starting capacitor?) and the fan is starting, at least at first, but won't stay running (run capacitor?). Another idea is the wall-mounted thermostat. There should be some checks you can do on this (e.g. bypassing the thermostat feature to make it think the temperature is high) to see if the unit will run. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to do it, but a tech walked me thru it once when i was having a problem with my unit (heat in that case). Maybe there's someone on here that knows what checks you can run to check out the thermostat part.

RE: What to do with no sewer hookup

way i see it you've got 3 options:
1. conserve water
2. take the trailer to dump if it gets full before you're ready to leave.
3. buy a blue tote & use that to dump.
why are you 'forced to wait' ???

12V light bulbs - HOT

my trailer has a light fixture mounted on the bottom of the kitchen cabinet over the sink so it lights the sink area. This fixture has 2 RG 921 bulbs in it & they burn hot to the point that the plastic lenses covering the bulbs have melt spots where the bulbs are. The bulbs are not touching the lenses or any part of the light fixture. Does anyone know of a replacement that has less wattage i can use??
I saw these on Amazon & wonder if they will work...

RE: 12V System Issues

Is my converter going out?
your symptoms sound like the ones i had when it turned out to be my converter. I had WFCO at the time, the one that came with the trailer. There's a test you can do on the converter but to me it didn't seem to mean much as it has you disconnect the converter output then measure output voltage of the converter...big deal. Anyhoo, I ended up changing out the WFCO for a better converter that has staged charging features and a monitor for the system. Since we were living in the RV at the time i couldn't wait for WFCO to send a replacement (+ i didn't want it) so they sent me a check for some amount i can't remember, but it seems like it was around $60 or so, not enough to buy one at a store. Good luck with your troubleshooting.

RE: Mega Cab Info Please

we rv/camp with 2 dogs & so need the room in the rear of the cab for them. I remember a couple of years ago looking at dodge trucks and some at least had a contoured rear floor under the bench seat so when you lifted the bench seat up there would be this raised, contoured floor instead of something more level. I think the rear floor design was to provide storage pockets for things. I'm not sure if these are mega-cabs or not. Like i said, it's been awhile since we looked at them. We ended up with a chev truck & it has a nice large area in the back for the dogs.
