RE: What are States known for?

You find the same kinds of things that you buy in CA. In fact some of what you will buy will be from CA. You will find regional favorites from other states that you have in the stores in CA.
For example, the brand of flour you buy in CA may not be available in other part of the country. But they will have flour with a different label/producer.
Resturants can be different.

RE: water heater boils out

Fom the Suburban Manufacturing website.
Why does water drip from my water heater's pressure and temperature (P&T) relief valve?
You may experience water weeping or dripping from your water heater's pressure and temperature (P&T) relief valve when your water heater is operating. Water weeping or dripping does not mean that the P&T valve is defective. As water is heated, it expands. The water system in a recreational vehicle is a closed system and does not allow for the expansion of heated water. When the pressure of the water system exceeds the relieving point of the P&T valve, the valve will relieve the excess pressure.
One way to reduce the frequency of this occurrence is to maintain an air pocket at the top of the water heater tank. This air pocket will form in the tank by design - however, it will be reduced over time by the everyday use of your water heater. To replenish this air pocket:
1.Turn off the water heater.
2.Turn off the cold water supply line.
3.Open a faucet in the RV.
4.Pull out the handle of the pressure relief (P&T) valve and allow water to flow from the valve until it stops.
5.Release the handle on the P&T valve - it should snap closed.
6.Close the faucet and turn on the cold water supply. As the tank fills, the air pocket will develop. Repeat this procedure as often as needed to reduce the frequency of the weeping P&T valve. If the weeping persists after following this procedure, you may elect to have your dealer install an expansion or accumulator tank in the cold water line between the tank and check valve to relieve the pressure caused by thermal expansion.

RE: Quicken - some info that may be new to you

An answer ~ and a sermon
The Answer:
ktmfrs.. Much depends on whether your Quicken account in One Step Update is set up with Express Web Connect or Direct Connect. Direct Connect is a direct online connection between your financial institution and Quicken. With Express Web Connect an aggregator(Intuit's Sever) is used. Data from your FI is grabbed by the aggregator (Intuit's server) and then the data is directed from the aggregator(Intuit's server) to Quicken during your One Step Update. Anyway, each individual Quicken account is set up with either Express Web Connect or Direct Connect.
And the Sermon
Obvious, Quicken has been around since the very early 90's and is used by many. Has anyone here ever heard of an issue / security issue / a compromise with Quicken / when using Quicken. No, that's right you have not. Will there ever be an issue, sure anything is possible. Reality is Quicken just mirrors your financial institution and you could have security problems even there. The financial institutions and Quicken work very closely together and security of your accounts is their priority. Regardless of how you do your online banking, there are always precautions/caveats and concerns. When I hear people saying they were an IT, a software developer, Aunt Millie had a security issue or whatever and they would never do online banking I laugh, laugh. Yes, indeed there are concerns but that does not mean ahead / you should not move use online banking and such and stay in the cave so to speak..

RE: Need to upgrade batteries/charging system- suggestions?

IMHO, a combination of LED's, more and better batteries combined with energy conservation will be the least inexpensive.
The batteries you described are probably G24 with 80 AH each for a total of 160AH of which ideally you should only use 80 AH before recharging.
For example lights use about 1.5amps per hour each. The furnace itself will use 7 Amps per hour and for 8 hours use, will draw 56 AHs.
Charging every day is a nessessity. If you wait until the furnace will not run. then it will take longer than 5 hrs to replenish the batteries. You can purchase more & more battery capacity, however, whatever you use will need to need to be replaced by longer charging times. Partially charging batteries will kill batteriess fairly quickly.
Solar panel can be had for about $2.00 per watt. A 135 watt panel will be about $270 plus the charge controller. Do a search here on 'solar panels', and you will find hours of reading and information
Lots of choices, some more expensive than others. Conservation being the least expensive.
Good luck

RE: Caravanning?

On our Alaska trip, we chose not to go on one of the caravan tours, because of the expense. At Dawson we were in a campground that was the starting point of a caravan. Met several of the people.
From Dawson to Whitehorse, we met the same people at each campground along the way. For them, the campground reservation were already made, tours arranged etc. The caravan leaders look out for their group, If someone has trouble, they are there to help with small repairs or get assistance for more serious problems. The caravan travelers tend to stay within their own group. Outsiders are not invited to their evening functions. Which is reasonable.
For us, we did that for ourselves. But we did meet many other folks along the way doing it like we did. We got to boondock in areas they could not. They may have learned something about the areas in their evening funtion from the wagonmasters that we missed.
Either way, the trip was enjoyable to us, and those folks we talked to on the caravans enjoyed it too.

RE: Dexter brakes worth it?

For safety items, I avoid the least expensive options. The standard Dexter brake shoes should be a good choice. If your controller is set too agressive it can cause the RV brakes to do too much of the braking.

RE: SUV needed

Most everyone thinks that they will not load their RV to the GVWR. After a couple of years, the accummulation of stuff builds up. Some weigh their units from time to time to check their weights, but most do not and guess. I suspect that some of the tire issues we hear about are related to being overweight.

RE: TIRE CHAINS ON TT

Chains go on the same axle of TT. They are the same as car chains, but truckers and some RV'rs call them drag chains. In snowy areas, they can help to control the trailer in down hill travel. For us slick or snowy weather helps us to stay in one spot untill the weather clears and the roads are plowed.

RE: Load Capacities

A pre-98 diesel would be 14 years old. It likely will have more than 140-150K miles on it. You may find one with less miles and many with more. They will have less payload capacity than the newer models. Large campers with big slides will weigh more than 3000#.

RE: How many miles per day

we average 50MPH with stops for gas, lunch, rest, whateveer and thats driving 60-65MPH. 600 miles in one day would be a 12-13hr day. Setup and take down adds another couple of hours. Meals and cleanup -- not much to see after that. Stop at 4:00pm. setup have a cool one, have dinner, relax and enjoy. Leave at 8:00am, swap drivers every 2 hours. repeat.

If this is the outlet to plug in shore power, it should be the male version of the same plug. The shore power cord will have the female version. Important for safety

RE: Cell Phone service in BC, Alberta, Yukon, Alaska

As you get further north, cell coverage becomes more scarce with the exception around communities. The Yukon is sparsly populated therefor not much coverage. The same with Alaska. The areas around the larger communities it is better.
Not sure about satellite phones. Not sure why you would need one.
