RE: Roads of SW Utah

It has been a while, but I don't recall any problems with this route. There may be one or two grades, but nothing serious.
Second this.
Drove it last year in my old gasser with tow. No problems to report, unless it is snowing.

RE: Anastsia State Park, St Augustine, FL

We have a trip planed there in late June. This will be our first trip to the park. We have a 32ft fifth wheel we are bringing and plan to stay three nights in sights 132 first night then in sight 131 for the remanding two nights. Looking at the photos the sights look spacious and large.
They're not! We had a space booked that said it would accomodate our 32' 5'er and we couldn't get in due to the height and the way the spot was setup on the road. I will NEVER go back there even though it's only a couple of hours from us.
You have to choose your site. We picked one on line and then called the ranger to confirm that we would fit. I think it was site 69. (I have to disagree slightly with fla-gypsy. There are other loops besides Coquina that have long sites.)
We have a 40 foot MH, about 13 feet high with dome. Put out three slides and awning. Had to be careful, but we fit fine.
Trailers and 5ers are another issue that I am not qualified to comment on. (Not that it ever stopped me before.)

RE: Anastsia State Park, St Augustine, FL

Lots of good, helpful comments above.
We live about 30 miles from St. Augustine, and went to Anastasia for a shakedown trip with our new to use 40 foot MH in September of last year.
Had to take it slow getting into our site, it was so heavily wooded. Beautiful campground and beach. We biked to the beach.
Weather will be hot and humid. Chance of a hurricane are very small at that time.
While there we had a "frog strangler" of a rain which unseated our awning. Learned an important lesson.
On arriving I would advise you to take highway 207 off the interstate and then 312 over to the beach side, rather than driving through downtown St. Augustine.

RE: SF Bay to Mobile, AL in June. I-40 or I-10

Either route is a good choice. Depending on the time you have to make the trip; I would choose the one that has something of interest for you to stop and visit along the way.
This is good advice if you are going to do some sightseeing.
Personally, I would go through Tehachapi to I-40 and avoid the LA/San Bernardino area entirely.

We did it a couple of years ago in the opposite direction.
Good road. Can get lonely at times as I remember.

RE: St. Augistine Florida

Anastasia State Park is a great place.
Don't know the size or pedigree of your rig, but they have some sites that will fit 40 footers.
You have to drive or bicycle to the beach, but it is a very good beach.
Darn, SidKaye, you just beat me.

RE: St Ignace or Mackinaw City area Michigan

I would recommend the St. Ignace side.
The town is much prettier, and the trip to the island is shorter and probably less crowded.
We stayed at Tiki RV Park, which was adequate. Some sites are fine for large rigs and some are not. Of course a lot of campgrounds are like that. You can bike to town, which we enjoyed.

RE: Best route for tow

68 over Tehachapi to I-40 east all the way.
There is a long pull up to Tehachapi, a hill out of the Colorado River, and the Arizona Divide at Flagstaff.
Ahhh.. that's actually "58" not 68. typo?
Thanks. I corrected it. Having cataract surgery next week.

RE: Best route for tow

Personally, I would go I-5, and cut over to 99 north of Bakersfield. Take 58 over Tehachapi to I-40 east all the way.
There is a long pull up to Tehachapi, a hill out of the Colorado River valley, and the Arizona Divide at Flagstaff, and maybe you will go a little slow leaving Albuquerque.
Haven't been this way is a couple of years and my memory may be spotty. Can't think of any other hills to speak of.

RE: St. Augustine Fl to Ocala Fl

Absoultely correct on CR-314. This will cut many miles off of the trip. The road is not great but it is acceptable.
Couldn't remember the road, I'm not to crazy about 314
Yes, agree that 314 has a few hills. You might have to wait a bit to pass. (We are talking Florida hills, not the Smokies.) But it is only about 20 miles through the "scrub", as natives call the Ocala National Forest.

RE: St. Augustine Fl to Ocala Fl

SR 207 to Palatka 17/100 to SR 19 to Silver Springs SR 40 to Ocala
This poster has it nailed, except at Salt Spring take SR 314 to 40. All good roads, usually not much traffic.
If you are coming from the far south end of St. Augustine, take SR206 to 207, then etc, etc.

RE: I don't get it

Using the forum to get the benefit of the experience of others about roads and routes is helpful to me. Maybe not so much to the OP.
What I don't get are the questions like "I am going to the state or province of (fill in the blank). What should I do or see?" Some things that are "must see" to some are incredibly boring to me and vice verse.

RE: Hwy 20 across Oregon

I was thinking of going from the coast to either Eugene or Corvalis areas, then across the Cascades so I wouldn't be as far north as Portland or Mt. Hood.
Thanks for your other information and post.
We took 20 to the coast last spring. I thought the Corvallis to Newport section was a nightmare, with construction and traffic.
But maybe some locals or recent travelers have a more current observation to make.

RE: WHAT TO DO IN NOVA SCOTIA

We went to Digby to get the famous scallops. We must have picked the wrong restaurant, as we had better scallops in Camden Maine on the way up.
Agree with this. The scallops were nothing special, but Digby is such a lovely and relatively unspoiled little town that we enjoyed it. We had a spot in a campgound overlooking the bay, a short walk from town.

RE: WHAT TO DO IN NOVA SCOTIA

A lot depends on your "likes".
We were there last year and particularly enjoyed the Five Islands area, the town of Digby, the Maritime Museum in Halifax, Louisbourg, and the Cabot Trail. So many great places
Take the ferry to PEI. Charlottetown is a gem. We went to the Cavendish Music Festival. Lots of good bike trails on PEI.
In May to late June we did not make reservations more than a day ahead.
Love Canada and Canadians. The main roads are great, but prepare for some roughness if you go on secondary roads.

We took 20 last year in our 37 footer.
Curvy in places, but not a real problem. Fill up in Bend in you are concerned.
There is a terrific campground in Caldwell, ID if you are going that way.

RE: Houston-Ft Collins 287?

We traveled that direction almost 2 years ago to The Tetons and Yellowstone. On the way up we took 287 to Dumas, TX then 87 west to I-25 up to CO. On the way back, from Denver we took I-70 to 287 back to TX. It took about an hour longer on the return trip from Denver using I-70/287.
We travel to Salt Lake City at least once a year through Denver.
The 287 to Dumas and then 87 to I-25 is definitely the best route. Only time we had problems was this past Christmas when snow closed 87.
