RE: Looking for a 28'-32' Class A diesel

We have a 33' Country Coach Allure with 2 slides. (2004). Love it.

is one similar. Well built.

RE: New TOAD question

We used to own a Suzuki Grand Vitara and it was one of the best vehicles we ever owned. We traded it for a small pickup to haul a scooter. We would buy another one in a heartbeat. (my DH is a "car guy")

RE: MAYBERRY CG IN MOUNT AIRY NC

Love that campground. We've been there twice. Great owners who seem like family. Can't wait to go back. The area is beautiful.

RE: Considering full timing, (or at least long-terming).

So sorry for your loss. Perhaps one with a slide out or two to give more room and feel more like home. I see a lot of singles travel in Class B's or camper vans. 2 of us full time in a 33' Class A with 2 slides, with no problem. There are singles groups who travel in RV's and seem to have lots of fun when we see them at rallies. There are also many groups who do service work (Habitat for Humanity for example) or work camp for free camp sites. Great way to meet people. Perhaps you could do a trial run for 6 months and see how you like it? I say follow your dream. Life's too short.

RE: Liability insurance

National Interstate Insurance covers both the RV and the tow vehicle. They have full timers insurance which includes liability. When your RV is "permanent" or if you full time, you should carry liability per our agent.

RE: First time traveling long distance

Some hints: leave very early and stop early for the night. You won't feel so tired. 6am-2pm is a lot better than 9am-5pm. Stop every couple hours to stretch and walk around. Stop at a campground and hookup at least electric. We are members of Passport America, Good Sam and KOA so we get discounts for the campgrounds. We also like Corps of Engineers campgrounds and state parks but they are not usually near the freeway.
Before loading your fridge, put everything in your home fridge to get it cold. Don't put warm drinks, etc in the fridge. It has to work too hard to cool it. Load the fridge and leave air around the stuff inside (sides and back). Don't overload.
We always leave our fridge on when traveling.
Enjoy your trip!

RE: Fun area to camp with grandkids?

1. Stone Mountain RV Park in Stone Mountain GA. Pricey but lots to do.
2. Indian Springs State Park Flovilla, GA, a state park that we like. Lake swimming.
3. High Falls State Park, Jackson GA is another nice state park with swimming pool.
Also, not for this trip but for future, have you been to Vogel State park at Blairsville GA (NE Georgia). Our grandkids loved it there.

RE: KOA Rewards Card

We have been in some areas where the KOA was the best choice for full hookups which we like for longer stays. Some KOA's now have monthly rates with metered electric. They don't advertise them on their site but if you call they will give you a quote. We also like the laundry and wi-fi if Verizon doesn't work as well. We just stayed at the one in Milton FL and used our points for $10 off. Made the stay reasonable for one night. It's not always our first choice but we include it in our options when we stay at commercial campgrounds.

RE: Scoop on internet access? Newbie welcomes advice!

Verizon Mi-Fi hotspot. Worked great for us all over the USA. More secure than
wi-fi at parks. They have different plans depending on usage. Great for downloading ebooks on readers (that don't have wireless included) without hooking the ereader to a computer.

RE: first trip

We don't have a truck camper but my dad used to have one and 5 of us went on trips! We full time in a 33' class A, so we have to be aware of what we take with us. Some hints: Plan meals and only take what you need in small sealed containers. We cook pasta at home and put in plastic bag then just add sauce and instant meal. You can always pick up what you forget. We use paper plates and bowls, paper cups, and plastic utensils because they are lightweight and don't require washing dishes. We only have 2 skillets and 2 pots (large and small). Use dry drink mix or tea rather than carry heavy drinks. Dry food instead of canned if possible (less space and weight). Put cereal and crackers in sealed containers. The first thing we forgot was a can opener. Thin thermal blankets take up less space than thick heavy quilts. Thinner towels dry faster (got ours at the dollar store). You didn't say how long you'll be gone, but if more than a week, just take enough clothes for one week and find a laundry. Don't forget camera, sunscreen, chairs, stuff for smores!! You will learn what you need and what you don't. Have a place for everything and keep in in that place. Keep things stowed. Enjoy your trip and keep us posted!

RE: Route through New England

We took the ferry from Plattsburgh NY over to Grand Isle (South Hero). Stayed at Apple Island RV Park in South Hero. Then took Hwy 2. In Bar Harbor we stayed at Narrows Too RV Resort. The LL Bean shuttle (free) picks up at the park and takes you into Acadia National Park. In Vermont visit Cabot Cheese factory and Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream if you stay in Vermont very long. Enjoy! Can't wait to go back.

RE: Ugly Encounter at Campground

when 2 people are eating dinner on their own campsite I would consider it rude to walk through. I don't walk thru any campsite that is occupied and the people are there. Good for your wife for speaking out. Spitting on your truck showed just how rude the people were.

RE: Recomendations on cell & internet service

Verizon Wireless Mi-Fi hotspot and basic cell phone. Used it all over the US with no problems. Not cheap. The good thing about a hot spot is that you can also use it for other devices like ereaders to download books without connecting it to a computer. Love my Kindle!!

RE: US 19 between I-77 & I-74 in West Virginia

We've driven that route 2x in our 34' Class A towing a truck. No problem at all. There is a Corps of Engineers campground at Lake Summersville right off US19. Water electric and dump station. www.recreation.gov think the town is Summersville.

RE: Our first cross country rv trip

There are many ways to trip plan and I think I've tried them all. Now I use www.mapquest.com. I input the starting address and the end destination and then you can add stops. Add the ones you know for sure, then you can add additional rest stops as needed. (You can rearrange them by dragging them.) Once we decide the stops, I use www.woodalls.com to locate campgrounds. Once I find a campground, I always check www.rvparkreviews.com to read reviews from folks who have stayed there. Sometimes based on reviews, I choose another campground. Once I decide on the campgrounds, I go back into mapquest (be sure to save the map) and add the campground address and update the directions. I then print out the route and add the telephone number of the campground to the list in case we need to call them. We only make reservations for popular places, weekends or holidays. We've found that if it's not one of those times and we arrive mid week early in the afternoon we can usually find a spot. If we're not arriving early, we call and make a reservation as some park offices close fairly early. We drive no more than 5 hours per day and never drive in bad weather or at night. We always check in the campground before dark. We've found that if we leave early in the morning we can drive longer and don't feel as tired. We take quick stops every couple of hours to stretch our legs and stay alert. On freeways, 5 hours can equal 350 miles. On other highways it may be 250 miles. We also use the RVND 5510 GPS and Walmart Atlas for backup.

RE: Motorhome Fire kills 3

this just reminded us to check our fire extinguisher date and make sure our escape window is clear. I tend to stack pillows on the bed in front of that window. Anyone attend the fire safety seminars at FMCA? I might go to one at the next rally we attend.
