RE: I just got back from having a direct dish installed

Your DirectTV HD will operate on one cable, it is probably a SWM system and there will be a power inserter in the system to power the switches. You should be OK, enjoy your new system, I envy you!The 3005 is NOT a SWM dish.
X2
X3 but:
1. They should have brought in the four wires for expansion or at least two so you could use both tuners on you DVR.
2. I would have installed a SWM8 so you could use just ONE wire to each receiver. Would make it much easier should you add a second set.
3. I would not be happy about not them installing the mounting plate if I had a rubber roof. I "think" the Trav'ler has a roller that might wear through the roof. The plate, I "think" has a runway for it.

Can't say it's smashing. The Series 4 seems cheapest at BestBuy.

RE: Frustration setting Slimline

For wind in the future, how do you anchor it? I lash my TV4RV.com tripod to a 5-Gal bucket full of water, short-term, and rocks, long-term. Bucket of rocks kept it "rock solid" all winter in Desert Hot Springs, meaning really windy.
Might add the bucket travels light and is a great place to put odds and ends when underway.

RE: Jensen AWM970 radio

I cut it because of power draw. Don't use it all except to play my Sirius through the Aux input.
I keep looking the 975 as it has HDMI. Just can't determine if it upscales DVD's. For the price it should.

RE: Direct TV LNB

An SL3 gets the 99, 101, and 103 carrying most of the programming.
An SL5 adds the 110 and 119. Don't know of anything on the 110 CONUS but the 119 carries SD locals and some SonicTap Music. If you don't need the 119 for SD Locals, then the SL3 is all you need but the SL5 won't hurt you and gets all the SonicTap channels.

RE: Jensen AWM970 radio

That would be my guess. Try it. If it works, your good. If not, add the yellow. Maybe there is some sort of circuitry that requires both. I added a switch to my yellow so I can turn it completely off.
I do have a two-year old model.

RE: Jensen AWM970 radio

I would hope the instructions would tell you. The radio has a clock so it needs power all the time for that. That would be one connection. The other is for actually running the radio.
The manual says "yellow" is "battery" power meaning continuous and "red" is "switched" power. The unit is obvious designed for boats and vehicles. Some things are hot all the time and others are hot only when the ignition is on.
You could hook both to same 12v wire if you want the clock. If you don't want the battery drain, just use the red.

RE: Waiting to order my Direct TV dish cost me over $100

You CANNOT do what OP is trying to do for anywhere near $100. The equipment alone is $1,400 for openers.
DirecTV SD manual setup on a cheap mount, sure.

RE: Best Buy sales gimick...... or not?

Other unneeded services they provide are the creation of "system restore" disks, "crapware" removal, and "optimization" for new computers for which they charge hundreds.
All can easily be done or totally unneeded.

RE: May be Switching to DirecTV - Info Needed

I'm assuming the HR34 is the only DirecTV DVR that gives me Whole House (RV) capability, right?
No. All H and HR's will do it. Early models require the DECA gizmos while 24's and above have it built in.
The HR34 has five tuners so it can record five programs at once. It can share the programming with other H's and HR's AND feed compatible TV's without requiring a box at the set.
If so, the Winegard Trav'ler 3005 can be used, but it sounds like for the HR34, I would have to use a 5 LNB portable. . . and both the Trav'ler and the portable would need its own SWM8, eh?
The HR34 and H25 are SWM only and cannot use any four-wire legacy Slimline. They are built for SWM (on dish) with a one-wire feed.
The Trav'ler must go to a SWM-8 then one-wire to a splitter then one-wire to each box. I don't think you can do MRV without SWM.
I am know expert but have this stuff and have sort of clue how it all hooks together. Your goal to use a Trav'ler with a backup portable and do MRV seems doable but certainly a challenge. Lot's of balls in the air.
With 24's and above the schematic will be straight forward SWM. The Trav'ler will need a SWM-8 and the tripod slimline will need SWM (on dish) or a SWM-8. The hard part is introducing an A/B setup to isolate the two signal sources and their power supplies. If it were me, I'd get the Trav'ler up and running making sure their is accessible working room around the SWM-8, PI, and splitter. Take a breather, test it on the road, ponder it, and then tackle the introduction of a tripod backup.
Re the HR-34. They might could be a little buggy right now. Nothing big but certainly annoying.
Need another nap.
