RE: 2-3 days in Western South Dakota....suggestions please

Doug, Our DGKs were about 8and 10 when we took them and they loved the Hill City area. Grand Son is a nut for arrows and found about a million dollars worth at Crazy Horse, they loved the Laser show at CH and while we were waiting for it to start the took pencil and paper and checked out license plates to see how many differen ones they could find. The Needle Hwy is fun, Wind Cave is too. The big thing is Rushmore it's self, even at their age the Grand Kids loved it, it's pretty spectacular and besides there is a great ice cream store in the park. It gets warm, and crowded si get there early and bring lots of water. The whole area is great and you really can spend a week or two from the Badlands to the Caves to Hill City with Rushmore and Crazy Horse on up to Devils Tower and Custer Battlefield. Tow or three days will fly by. Take lots of photos for the cold winter evenings for remembering a great trip.

Grand Cyn Assoc Meeting this month, anyone going beside us?

We're going to the GC for the annual get together of the GC Assoc and the eclipse, wondering if anyone else belongs and are you going? It's our first time to go and depending on their school and social loads the DGKs may go too. We never went to the GC with our girls and they are a little jelouse of the GKs going for the third time so we have talked about taking them and leaving the GKs at home with their father. Anyway, we'll be in Trailer Village and if anyone is going PM me and if we can get together I'll buy the sodas or coffee or beer or just offer you a nice seat and conversation.

RE: Total Knee Replacement Recovery

Thanks for all the support, I think that the PT was trying to tell me to go see the Family Services DR, with our HMO (Kaiser SoCal) after the surgery is completed, you see your family Dr unless there is a problem with the surgery. I think my knee is fine, it's the soft tissue stuff that hurts. I'm getting the support stockings they carry at the pharmacy and will try them for a week and by then it will be time to see the surgeon for final follow up and if it still hurts I'll see my DR.
I am starting to have trouble with the other knee which was replaced two years ago and with my back because of favoring the right knee. It just gets tiring and I needed to vent and the DW has been great but I can'tkeep telling her about it she feels bad enough anyway.Sure wish I felt like I did for the first ten days after the surgery.
Thanks again and for all you married guys, Sunday is Mother's Day, don't forget.

RE: Huntington Beach Weather

I know this will not help predict the future but it is a nice shot and gives the immediate weather. One of maybe 10 to 20 sites the DW visits every morning. She often suggests we should be someplace else other than home supervising the current hoard of contractors at our home or caring for our DGKs or visiting one of our many Drs. She even does that while we are on the road, "Oh look Honey, the weather in Florence, OR or Dead Horse Point is fantastic, lets go there."

RE: Pop Rivet vs Screw..Which is stronger in aluminum?

After looking at the Plusnut I change my vote to them. That is how the expandable type of poprivet works but appears to be a better way to go. I have a very similar item in my tool kit but it was called a Blind Nut when I bought mine years ago. Problem with mine is they are aluminum and very soft. Look at the Tri-Grip and Bulb Lite blind rivets.
I like the Wellnuts and Jacknuts as well, think I will get some of those. The Jacknut looks like a Hollow Wall Anchor without the screw. Tool looks like my tool for installing Blind Nut.
There are great things here. I think I'll keep reading the forums.

Total Knee Replacement Recovery

This is not a question about how long it takes, it's more about what's wrong and why is it taking so long. Operation on 03-12-20, was given pain pils every so often because the anesthesiologist screwed up the spinal and told me it was my fault so I was under a General. Never used the morphine drip, out of bed early next day, would lift my leg to install or remove the machine that flexs the leg and finally urinated on the second day after surgery and was sent home. Everything was fine, no pain, no limp. Following Thursday the in home PT shows up and askes why I need PT. Gives me exercies anyway. Saturday evening I go to take a shower and noticed my leg was stiff, swollen and back of thigh was black and blue. Showed DW she rushed me to ER, nothing unusual according to ER Doc. Swelling got worse, bruise got bigger and tender to the slightest touch and knee painful to bend. Saw surgeon, recommended suphose. Now here I am eight weeks later, released from PT, saw my Dr. was told swelling will go down and now I'm taking 6 to 8 5mg Vicoden a day for the pain and swelling is slightly less, bruise is gone and pain is controllable.
Asked the PT yesterday after she released me saying I have exceeded all the goals for range of movement and when I asked her why there was swelling she responded, "We Don't Know, we very seldom see it like this, What did your surgeon recommend"? Today is pretty good, not much pain, swelling is the same and sitting at the computer makes the leg and back very stiff.
I think there is something wrong in the mussles or tendons, not the knee and they don't want to pay for a scan but they schedule an aortic ultrasound even though I have no heart proble, strokes snd do not smoke, but, Dr. said " I'd like you to have one".
All I can think about is that when the Dr's graduated from school and intership they were tested to see if they were proficient enought to start PRACTISING, when I became a journeyman electrician I was tested to determine if I was proficient and knew what I was doing.
Okay, rant over, time to go close up the house and turn on the AC.

RE: Adding an RV dump to my septic system

Joe,
The good news is that is easy simple and either the ABS to a Tee or to a knockout will work. The precautions about chemicals are real, I will on occasion use a deodorant in my tanks if the weather is really hot or if the rig will sit for a couple of weeks before dumping and I always use a biodegradeable, non formaldyehyde one. I have dumped in a lot of septic tanks and never had it overflow the cofferdam and send solids into the leach field, personally I'd like to hear that from seventeen septic engineers and not maintenance folks.

RE: Balance Between Planning the Trip and Being Flexible

We did a trip last fall from mid Sept to late Nov. Had reservations at a few places before we left. Rocking J Ranch in Hill City SD. I'd go back to Crooked Creek a 1/4 mile away for less and a nice fun place. Like I said very few reservations and after the first two weeks things wil be looser and more vacancies. We called ahead quite a few times, usually the same day but in a couple of cases maybe two days. We have to be flexible because or rig is getting up there in age and not that it breaks down a lot but parts can be hard to come by. Just remember, those relatives wil be there in a few years and you'll have an excue to drive out West again. If you have to skip something, oh well, next trip has got to be the attitude. We use our DGKs as our excuse, Gee Got to bring the DGK'sto DC or Gettysburg or GSMs. Just relax and be flexible.

RE: NICE RV Park/Campground Near Downtown San Antonio

Stayed a a KOA, I think S/O town and on the bus line. We took the Suzi and found a municiple lot for five bucks two blocks from the Alamo. We were basically on our way home and I was making brown baggers turns so I didn't do the entry in the Logbook. No price or description of the KOA.
The food on the River Walk was good, cost was moderate to expensive, We're use to Cali-Mex and not Tex-Mex so it's not what we're use to, but it was tasty.
Alamo can get busy so get your name on the list or get in line first thing. Once your'e inside there is a commercial side to the Mission but remember it is a memorial to the 180 or folks who died there. Tour the buildings in the back and stroll the courtyard, very nice. Take a river cruise too.

RE: Pop Rivet vs Screw..Which is stronger in aluminum?

rerod,
Okay one 1/8" piece of aluminum, if you decide to use a sheet metal screw (usually have deeper coarser threads) or a self tapping screw(usually have SAE or metric with shallower and finer threads) the prefered way to install is to punch a hole thru the aluminum causing a conical shape on the inside and giving you more area for threads and some say as you tighten down the shape causes the hole to tighten around the screw even more.
I have never heard of monel pop rivets, I'm not saying they aren't available, I just haven't heard of them and have not experience with them. I have two basic types in my toolbox. I have the straight shaft type and the expanding type, they expand just like a Molly Bolt. Several things on my rig are held together with the expanding type, the hinges on the radiator access hatches, the molding where pieces of filon meet and a couple of other places that I just can't picture at the moment. Installation is in a predrilled hole the same diameter as the rivet.
I think I would lean toward sheet metal screws in punched holes and with Permenent Loctite on the threads. If you can't use a prick punch to make the holes and you have them drill it, I'd use the expanding pop rivets.

RE: Walmart parking lot stays - need advice please

Last fall we stayed at three Walmarts in 10 weeks on the road. We got to a few places where there were no CGs open. Only once did we come across a store were we didn't feel safe staying. Looked up another in the same town and it was very nice. Another spot that is often available is Home Depot, stayed at a WM next to a HD somewhere in Canada. HDs have WiFi so that can be good. Always ask Mgr, at the same time ask where a item is located so I can show the Mgr that I'm shopping there too. Wife usually gives me a list.

RE: Canada Trip

If you are interested in something unusual enter Minnisota at Thunder Bay and stay at Grand Portage in the Indian Casine campground. You can catch the boat to Isle Royale, neat place. There is a great mexican restuarant in International Falls and Voysgeurs Natl Park is nearby. The big campgrounds at Internation Falls were closed when we were there so no info.
If you get to Bloomington there is Spirit Lake casino and a nice campground. Even has a RV wash station. Grand Morais is close to Grand Portage and is a neat place to visit, many, many places to eat. Sven and Ole's is a great pizza place.
Want more info let me know.

RE: Throwing out a question because...

At first it sounded like you wanted a lolding leg but now it seems you want to be able to move the table. In the RV Supply catalog most dealers use is a leg by Hong's that utilizes the pedistal tube but has a movable base. It is Hong's Porta-Leggs. Hope this helps.

RE: Lewis & Clark trail

We haven't followed the trail but the DW has been reading Untaunted Courage for a couple of years and we have visited Ft. Clatsop and other site along the Columbia from Beacon Rock to the mouth of the river. When you get to the mouth of the Columbia River you might enjoy Ft. Stevens. It is very big but very nice campground. We took the DGKs last summer and they loved it. We were in loop H, site 31 in our rig. You can go to the firewood kiosh and sign up for wood delivery. Kind of neat feature. They have three grades of wood, I believe it is tinder, kindling and firewood. The two smaller sizes are from dementional lumber and can be transported from state to state, the firewood is split wood and must be burned there. If you have kids or not you really need to visit Ft. Clatsop, there are a lot of docents and they give exhibitions at different times during the day. There was one on food and cooking which was really great, DGKs are no pretty good at flint and steel firemaking because of that demonstration. Lots to do and see in those two places. There was a lot of info on the Oregon State website during the bicentennial, it may be gone but you should try.

RE: Mammoth Lakes

Glen,
Most if not all of the old free camping areas are gone, I would do as SteveAE suggested and contact the inter agency for info. There were some areas on the Benton Road from Mono Lake to Benton but those too may be closed. We're big time now in Mammoth (accoring to the Town Council and Visitors Bur.) and prices are too. The Town is virtually bankrupt and prices for everything including camping in Mammoth will only go up. Crowley is owned by Los Angeles Dept. of Powerful Water and as soon as our Mayor figures out how he can do it, he will tax everything at Crowley too.
