RE: I'm back!! Traded Winnebago View for 2012 Roadtrek SS Agile!

Pictures! We need Pictures! I am waiting until the 2013 comes out with 4WD and 30 MPG. Just looking around a bit, it looks like the higher mileage will be with a standard 4 cylinder engine and new 7 speed transmission. The V6 with the 5 speed transmission will be optional. The didn't give any hp or torque specs on the 4 cylinder, but if it is like most European stuff, it won't be very powerful, compared to what we in the US are used to. With a maxed out B, it might well be severely underpowered, making most of the mileage gains go away. Not much use for a seven speed, if it is always downshifted because of lack of hp. I saw several references that said the 4 wheel drive will be so expensive, it is likely it won't be imported to the US. Try to be optimistic about 4 cylinders! We have a 2011 Subaru Forester XT Turbo that puts out 242 HP while returning 22 MPG,and there are far more powerful and now reliable 4 & 6 cylinder engines making much more power than that.....

RE: Mosquito aversion

Grew up in Michigan and there were plenty of mosquito's but not sure about this time of year. I remember once we camped in Colorado near lakes and there were many mosquito's. My husband suggested that we move to a campground near a running river and we did not encounter any mosquitoes. So maybe if you journeyed by moving water instead of a stationery lake? Not sure if this was a coincidence or not. Actually, you can't win... in late Sring/early Summer black flies bar hatched out in moving water, like scenic woodland streams. We use the tennis raquet looking bug zappers to swat nasty bugs. A good hit on a juicy bug (or spider!) gives a satisfying *snap* and sometimes a nice spark. It's kind of fun to use and even provides a little exercise!

RE: Conway, NH to St. Johnsbury, VT

Both the Kanc and 302 qre very scenic roads - 302 to 93 might be a bit easier with a toad, and the Kanc can be very busy on fall wekends, BTW, the construction ob Route 2 thruogh ME and NH was finished last summe and it is a great smooth ride!

RE: Your opinion on ugly current model car front ends?

Some new Audis. Mazdas, and others have gaping maws for grills - they look like bottom feeders. And what about the current trend for cars that look like someone sat on them - the new Mini Coupe, the Land Rover Evoque, the hideous new Lamborghini SUV: SQUISHED!

RE: traving with dogs

We travel with 2 small dogs and a cat - we try to avoid hot areas (Rodger, we know that's tough for you!). As others have mentioned, no matter how good your dogs are sometimes you can't avoid the breed restrictions. Some CGs are also very strict about barking dogs - one "woof' from your camper and you are out!

RE: best route from spring grove, pa to eastham, ma

FYI- the Sagamore Bridge is STILL under construction. There may be traffic backups on either side, depending on the time of day or day of the week. It would be a good idea to check the traffic reports before you get there, or just take the Bourne Bridge and detour to RT 6 at some point.

RE: If you could have one car back

My 1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe 2 door with 59,000 miles. I bought her for $25 in 1955 when I was 14 years old and drove it off road for 2 years. Sold her when I went away to school...

RE: Formula One racing- any fans out there in RV land ?

It's like watching slot cars - impossible speeds and practically invisible drivers. I'll take vintage sports cars any day - even "slow" ones like old Sprites and MGs. "It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow!"

RE: Pensylvainia Amish Country Trip Suggestions

We have stayed at Country Haven CG for the last 7 years- health problems this year forced us to cancel our reservations. Yes, the owners are strict about their rules, but that's not always a bad thing. The CG is quiet, clean, and has the best view of the Amish farmland in the area. There is an Amish bakery just up the road, and the Amish kids and their pony visit the CG from time to time to sell their yummy goods. Unless you plan lots of day trips there's not much for kids to do at the CG....

RE: Picturesque Maine

X4. You've got to visit BH once, but Southwest Harbor is very welcoming - Southeast Harbor not so much. Be sure to drive the Loop Road, and don't miss Cadillac Mountain. You can drive up or hike it.... Be sure NOT to go to BH when a big cruise ship is in the Harbor - they disgorge THOUSANDS of tourists into the shops and restaurants!

RE: ocean front camping in the northeast

There are plenty of ocean side statesat the BH KOA. Yes, they are on the bay,but with a disatnt view of islands and mountains, very high and low tides, and lots ofrocks and tidal pools to explore Last year we had seabirds and even a few seals on the rocks right in front of our camper! No surf or crahing waves, but nice and quiet with the most fantastic sunsets anywhere. We like to go in September and October, when the loud campers are gone and the Park is not so busy. No lines at the restaurants and clam shacks. Headed back to the KOA again th is fall.... Reserve early, though!

RE: equate Flushable Wipes?

When in doubt, bag 'em. We use the black doggie-do disposal bags. Our macerator has served us faithfully since 2005 - why even take a chance?

RE: Ford planning a Sprinter shaped van in US market

Most people don't want to drive a camper van with a manual transmission. It's rather difficult with such a large vehicle. We recently bought new cars with automatics rather than manual transmissions. Why? Stop and go driving and hill driving is a real pain with manual transmissions in the Bay Area! All you folks have got to remember that these vans (or any vans) are built to be used by plumbers, builders, and other tradespeople. A miniscule number of them end up as "motorhomes". The mfrs are building for their market, made up of users to whom driving is their business, not a sport.

RE: Maine in May?

The closer to the coast the cooler it will be, and tha further away from the coast the more black flies will appear. Black flies hatch in cool, fast moving streams but not salt water. We like Maine at the end of September - no black flies (maybe a few mosquitos) and no crowds - even in Bar Harbor except when a big cruise ship docks. Been going "Down East" now for 70 years...

No delivery, but it's a short walk to the lobster tent at the Bar Harbor KOA. And a nice lady drives around to the sites selling fresh blueberry pies!

RE: What is the best place you've ever eaten at on the road?

A third recco for the Shady Maple in PA. Otherwise, Poor Boys in Bar Harbor for sauteed lobster and Mainely Meats at the Atlantic Beer Company for fine beer & ale, root bear, blueberry soda, and great pork BBQ - in Maine! All in Bar Harbor.
