RE: Homesick for the sunshine!

I'm ready to go back now!! Last winter was our first winter south and we really enjoyed it,as a Canadian the differences between central Florida and Essex County are so diversified that for me it really was a "Foreign Country" complete with differnt foods, language and culture! I now notice the pollution in the air here in Windsor a little more and how the sky isn't quite as clear or blue and of course the big differnce in the costs of food, clothing, fuel and most of all BEER!!!! I look out my window of my fiver' and long for the gentle sweeping palm fronds swaying with the breeze (i'm also missing my Jimmy Buffett lower latitudes state of being) what more can i say,,,i want my "Cheeseburger In Paradise"!!! Could not be said better!:B

RE: Campgrounds close to Toronto

Cant comment on Milton Heights but Indian Line is not a not the nicest of campgrounds. It is the closest to home for us and my wife would never agree to stay there. KOA Toronto North(Cookstown) is a great place and its just north of Toronto on the 400. Steve Just a note...the KOA(Cookstown) is about 30 miles to Willowdale. Depending where you are going in Willowdale, you would have to come south on 400 about 25 miles (which is the main north south hwy to cottage country), and then either on 407 toll road or hwy #7 about another 5 miles. IL is about 8 miles (+or-) to the center of Willowdale.

RE: Campgrounds close to Toronto

We have lived full time at Milton Heights for 3 summers and 1 winter. We have also lived full time at Indian Line for 4 seasons while we worked and had family in Willowdale.:) At IL it is very rare to hear a plane so that you even notice it, as most times they are very high up before even reaching the campground or they fly over Lake Ontario which is south. The only time we noticed the planes were when they were directly overhead and that was when the Snowbirds fly over for the Ex in Sept. Milton, you can hear the 401 drone (in the south sections mostly. To the person who says Indian Line is not very nice...yes, it is not a 'resort, non of the campgrounds close to TO are resorts. About 4 or so years ago, the manager was only interested in collecting her pay cheque. So perhaps that is what the other poster remembers. The gentlemen and those that work for him now are very good and take a personal interest in the campground. There has been quite a change. As for convenience to Willowdale, imo, Indian Line is the best place. Also, if you do not mind tolls, hwy 407 is also very close and will get you to Willowdale in record time. For convenience, for security, for hookups....IL would be the best choice. However, it is extremely hard to get a site there, so booking as early as possible, especially if you want to stay on one site for more than a couple of days, is advisable.

RE: Campgrounds close to Toronto

Indian Line Campground is the closest campground to the city of Toronto (downtown). It is run by the TRCA (Toronto Region Conservation Authority). There are 30 & 50 amp sites, all have water and electric many have sewer, pump out, pool, security, large reservoir lake and close to hwys 427,400,401 to get you to wherever you are going. There are also bus routes to take you into the city and\or subway stations. Although so close to the city, the campground has many trees and treed sites, as well as open sites. It also has many sunbirds from the U.S.A. :)

RE: Florida Storms

Thank you all for responding. We went out and bought a weather radio and finally figured out how to set it up. Must have set it up right as it went on this morning at 6am with a warning.:) We did set it to "all" and it gives some comfort knowing we will be warned ahead of time. After showing hubby your responses, he agreed that maybe putting the 'important' things together was not just my crazy idea and that we should be prepared. I can see that lightning is dangerous as two bolts started two fires yesterday in this campground. Camperpaul, that site is staying on my computer until all bad weather has past and then as a bookmark so it will be available always. mdock2, bookmarking this site as well as it has details for all areas as we travel.

Florida Storms

We have been in Florida twice in tornadoes and were very lucky. But, due to accident caused by a tow truck (long other story) we have been delayed over 2 months this year and cannot leave for Canada for at least another two weeks. We are in a state park north of Miami and they are predicting bad storms for Sat. thru Sun. with high winds etc. Any Floridians out there who can ease my fears for sitting out the storms in the RV? Hubby says 'no problem', I am worried.

Canadian Fulltimers

Any Canadian fulltimers still travelling in the southern U.S.? How long do you stay in Florida\Texas\Arizona? Where do you go when you get back to Canada? Stay in one place for the summer or travel around?

RE: Tank level indicator: Upgrade cancelled!!!!!!

If one side of your grey / black water tanks is accessible from outside, you can use an inexpensive stud finder to indicate the level of the liquid. Just run it up/down the side of the tank until it beeps. Never thought of that! Going out now to try it and prove to DW that we can last at least another week!

RE: Lakefront Campground in Ontario?

Have you looked at a map of Ontario? It is HUGE with more lakeside camp sites than you could possibly see in a lifetime. fyi Ontario is 415,000 square miles with about 3,900 lakes of a decent size plus the 5 Great Lakes and many other smaller bodies of water. Every kind of camping and\or resort you could want. Very hard to choose. Sure you will have a great time no matter where you go.:) (Muskoka is about 2,500 square miles with about 1,500 lakes...just beautiful...don't think you can go wrong travelling there.)

RE: How will they get home?

I'm liking it so much in Key West that I want to stay, but my wife won't let me LOL. We came for a month or so and stayed 5 months...so far! Unfortunately the U.S. government won't let us stay over 6 months or we would never leave.

RE: How will they get home?

For Canadian snowbirds its a double whammy. If they dont make it back by April 1, their passports expire and so will have to remain in the US indefinitely. Oh no! Bad news for Starbucks and Duncans......Tim Hortons will be entering the US market! You're kidding right?;) (For those who don't know (and want to know?)...Cnd passports are good for 5 years.)

RE: costs to snowbird

The first few winters it will cost more, and you'll get less for your money then the following winters to come. There is without a doubt a learning curve once you start. Trick is not to base everything on that first winter out. Use it as more of a way to get your feet wet and to figure out what works FOR YOU. The other thing is for some of us the trip to and back is as much, if not more, enjoyable then sitting tight for the winter. If you're enjoying that part heading south, don't rush it to get to your destination. There is a real tendency to want to push that first season and to start the snowbird ball rolling. Yes, this will cost much more money then sitting tight, but will be worth it in the long run if you enjoy traveling. If you're over 62 look into the golden age passport. It allows 50% off camping at federal parks. Some of the COE parks will be the nicest that you will come accross and we find spending a week at them to be very enjoyable on our migration south/north. Gives you plenty of time to explore an area. If you can, try not to book long term anywhere. Sometimes it works out great, other times not so good. Keep your options open even though it may cost more money that first season. It's all part of that beginning learning curve. And yes, it will cost more then just the fuel to get there and back. You'll meet people and go out to dinner, see new stuff that you want to take back, go to events that are new, have break downs that you'll have to farm out, etc.... Good news is it won't cost an arm and a leg like short vacations would. Bottom line is that first season expect to pay more then you thought, but chaulk it up to "The cost of doing business." It'll get better with each year when you start to figure out what works for you. X2

RE: Curry Hammock site

RVCRUISER-Everyone on this site is just like that other guy that is whining so in the future, just PM or email me directly for those spots that open up. :) Really, if you want to do the work to reserve a spot a year in advance and then want to "sublet" it for a few days, who cares. It is your dime. They shouldn't complain to you. What they should do it complain to the state of FL and ask them to make prime waterfront spots available for only 5 days at a time. Better yet, get RA on your side with this idea they will help you as they will make more money making more reservations. :) Just to be clear...we do not reserve and sublet. Just knowing how hard it is to book a site, especially a good one, we felt someone could benefit from our 'problems'. We did bike around the campground first in case anyone here wanted to extend their stay, but most were booked longer or had something booked after here, so we put it on the forum. Now it seems we are the 'bad guys' here. Sorry we did it and if it happens again, we will simply leave early (no charge to us) and the first person who sees it on RA WINS!

RE: Curry Hammock site

= .... It's impossible to get a waterfront site at the SP's in the Keys.... It is not "impossible" to get a waterfront site at a Florida SP in the Keys. It happens every day. We have managed to score a great 14-day site for each of the last three years. It does take persistence and the commitment to book 11 months in advance, along with a little flexibility. Those with the greatest desire (and a little luck!) will win the sites. Like it or not, the rules are the same for everyone. Yup..we have had waterfront sites in the Keys from Dec.4th (well, John Pennekamp was not waterfront, but a large, good site)until now...actually booked until March 24th. Then we head up to the Florida mainland. fyi Did not start booking until November...all sites were cancellations. So it is possible, although it takes a lot of time and patience (and definitely LUCK).:B

RE: Curry Hammock site

I'm curious .... Can one party have two sites or two reservations simultaneously at the same Florida state park? ... and how do you transfer it to another party? Is the Parks Department involved? Is money paid by one party to the other? What is the process? Inquiring minds need to know! I've done it in the past where the person just told me that they were going to cancel their site at 12:00 noon and then I made sure that I was on the computer at 11:59 and kept refreshing the screen until I saw the site pup up. park not involved and no money exchanged hands. Just 1 fellow RV.net'r trying to help another. Two sites at same park as long as they are for two different rvs (eg.one site for us and one for daughter, so different names for 'occupant'). You can transfer on line as the other poster said, but there is a chance of losing it if someone is faster. eg. The site we have is booked until the end of the month. We are leaving it for 4 days in the middle of the reservation. If someone would like it, they would pay us the $43 per night and both of us would go to the Ranger station and change the name of occupant for those 4 days.

RE: Cape Canaveral

Some sites have had sewers(maybe one-third)since we first went there in 2006. This year when we were there they were upgrading the whole campground, one section at a time and I believe more sewer sites are being added. fyi When we were arranging to come back in March we were told our preferred site could not be guaranteed as they were not sure when each section would be worked on. Therefore fewer sites will be available.
